“The time has come to shatter this clockwork universe forever! Let us no longer be slaves of the hourglass! I warn you: those who do not embrace the greater path shall become victims of its passing!”

Chrono-Lord Aeonus

The infinite dragonflight[1] (or simply the Infinites)[2] is a dragonflight formed from corrupted members of the bronze dragonflight, the infinite dragons, who follow the teachings of Murozond, a corrupted form of the Dragon Aspect Nozdormu. Though it was believed their goal was seemingly to destroy the one true timeway, and to bring about the Hour of Twilight for the Old Gods,[3] their real reasons for meddling in the timeways is to avoid, what they believe, to be worse fates.[4] To this end, they pursue a corruption of the main timeline to one where they rule supreme and control the dictation of events.[5]

After the death of Murozond in the End Time, and the failure of Kairozdormu to use alternate timelines to gain infinite power, the infinites went silent until the awakening of the Dragon Isles. Led by Chrono-Lord Deios, they allied with the primal incarnate Iridikron to corrupt an earlier version of Nozdormu within the Dawn of the Infinite. While initially successful, heroes alongside Chromie managed to undo Deios' victory and return the Timeless One back to his original form, giving the Dragon Aspect hope that his fate as Murozond can be circumvented and is not pre-destined.

Following the war against the Primalists, some infinites still cling to the hope of Murozond and focus on wreaking havoc on the timeways. Conversely, Eternus and other like-minded members of the flight began to reflect on their actions and motivations, following an understanding between them and Nozdormu. They have since helped the adventurers to understand several events in the past.

Culture

The Infinite Oathstone, a corrupted version of the Bronze Oathstone.

Where bronze dragons exist to keep the time stream inviolate and the order of events progressing as the fates intended,[6] the infinite dragonflight stands against this notion. Believing that the timeways can and should be altered, the infinites pursue a "perfect" future, where they rule over all.[7] As the infinites are former bronze dragons, they display great cunning in all things. They differ by stooping to deception and guile, changing the timeways without the mortals ever knowing they were present, as seen with their interference in Old Hillsbrad Foothills. Other times, the infinites are more hands-on, as seen when they assaulted Medivh during the Opening of the Dark Portal.

The bronzes' control over time is a power many would like to abuse; the infinites have fought them often for this reason, trying to take control of the Bronze Dragonshrine, though they were stopped before.[8]

Nomenclature

Some infinites use anagrams of their original names as bronze dragons, such as Murozond and Morchie. Others seem to either keep their original name and drop the "dormu/dormi" and add "us" or "os".

Membership

Main article: Infinite dragon

The infinite dragonflight is far more diverse than most denizens of Azeroth know.[1] All castes of this dragonflight, from whelp to dragonspawn to fully grown dragon and, oddly, even some juvenile cloud serpents[1] have been encountered. The flight tempted many drakonid with promises of power, but most found only servitude and despair.[9] Inversely to the bronze dragonflight, which used many mortal helpers and few lesser dragonkin, the infinite dragonflight uses no mortals in its schemes. They also appear to have some proto-dragons, as seen in the Dawn of the Infinite.

The color range of infinite dragons varies from black to dark grey/gunmetal, with an oddly cracked and deteriorating appearance. They are covered with tiny black residual particles and a strange blue light glows through the cracks. Their breath is composed of black sand.[10]

While they awaited their corrupted Aspect, the infinite dragonflight had no leader.[11]

History

Creation

After the titans showed Nozdormu his own death, a tormented Nozdormu from the future was tricked by the Old Gods into trying to subvert his mortality.[12] The Old Gods' motivation in doing so was an attempt to erase Thrall from history, so that he would not be able to stop the Hour of Twilight.[3] As a result, Nozdormu (known then as Murozond, a creature out of time) shattered the timeways and created the infinite dragonflight,[12][13] jeopardizing the very future of Azeroth by trying to change past events.

Following the Battle of Grim Batol, Nozdormu's power was renewed, and he went on to explore the timeways. During his explorations, he found a series of temporal anomalies and began to investigate them. Nozdormu ultimately discovered a group of bronze dragon defectors revealed to be the infinite dragonflight. He soon discovered that the leader of this group was none other than a future version of himself. Seeking to understand how this could have come to pass, Nozdormu dove deeper into the timeways and soon found himself lost and trapped in all moments in time.[14] Soridormi was reportedly the first to recognize the minute ripples of corruption occurring within the pathways from the infinite dragonflight's interference.[15]

The Burning Crusade

Burning Crusade This section concerns content related to The Burning Crusade.

During the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, the infinite dragonflight appeared in two of Caverns of Time instances, attempting to prevent crucial events in Azeroth's history from occurring. In Escape from Durnholde Keep, they interrupted Thrall's escape by kidnapping Taretha Foxton. If Thrall had never escaped from Durnholde, he would never have been able to rebuild the Horde, free his people from the internment camps and lead them in battle against the Burning Legion during the Third War. Thus, Azeroth would have been destroyed.[3]

After the failure to kill Thrall,[16] the infinites attempted to prevent Medivh from opening the Dark Portal and allowing the Orcish Horde to invade Azeroth. While this would have prevented many deaths, it would also have caused the human nations to never band together to form the Alliance of Lordaeron, and thus there would be no one to oppose the Legion years later.[17][18]

Wrath of the Lich King

During the war against the Lich King in 27 ADP, the infinite dragonflight fought the bronze flight "through time" for control of the Bronze Dragonshrine in Dragonblight. The bronze dragon Chronormu tasked adventurers to identify the leader of the infinites using a device known as the Hourglass of Eternity.[19] When the hourglass revealed the long-lost Nozdormu, Chronormu stated that this made no sense, then brushed it off and said that she was glad that her Aspect was alive and well, as he had left without telling the rest of the flight "where or when" he was going.[20]

The infinites also appeared in the Culling of Stratholme dungeon, attempting to disrupt the timeline by preventing Arthas Menethil from purging the city.[21][22]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

“At last it has come to pass. The moment of my demise. The loop is closed. My future self will cause no more harm. Still, in the future, I will...fall to madness. And you, heroes...will vanquish me. The cycle will repeat. So it goes. What matters is that Azeroth did not fall; that humanity survived to live another day. All that matters...is this moment.”

Nozdormu after the defeat of Murozond

After the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, Occulus, one of the bronze drakes guarding the entrance of the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, became corrupted and turned into an infinite drake.[23]

During Thrall's quest to save Noadormu, the infinite dragonflight sent Aedelas Blackmoore to hunt him down. After he was freed, the Lord of Time finally revealed himself to be the creator and leader of the infinites to his brood. He went on to state that in a branching future, he becomes the "Master" spoken of by many infinite agents. His absence for a considerable amount of time was due to the investigation of his transformation, causing him to become lost in the timelines and unable to return to the present moment due to the manipulations of the Old Gods.[3]

In order to retrieve the Dragon Soul — the only thing capable of stopping Deathwing — from the distant past, Nozdormu and a group of adventurers traveled to the End Time, a vision of what Azeroth in a distant future if the Aspect of Death wasn't stopped. Their first step was to break Murozond and the infinite dragonflight's control of the timeways. The Horde heroes volunteered their lives to join Nozdormu on his quest, venturing into a future twisted reality beyond all recognition, where they ended the Lord of the Infinite together.[24]

In Year 30 ADP, the infinite dragonflight made a surprising return during the trial of Warchief Garrosh Hellscream, provided to Warlord Zaela by Kairozdormu. They attacked the Temple of the White Tiger with the Dragonmaw clan alongside Thalen Songweaver, Harrowmeiser, and Shokia in order to free Garrosh from captivity. After Zaela confirmed that Hellscream and Kairoz escaped, the infinites and their allies pulled back.[25] Despite providing aid in this endeavor and ensuring that Garrosh could escape to alternate Draenor, the infinite dragonflight played no role within subsequent events.

During the war in Draenor in 31 ADP, Chronormu, Khadgar and the adventurers found the corpse of Kairozdormu at Time-Lost Glade in Nagrand. When his spirit suddenly attacked them,[26] it revealed that if he had unlimited access to all alternate timelines, he and the infinite dragonflight would have truly achieved infinite power, both for themselves and for the coming battle with the forces of the Burning Legion.[27]

During the war against the Jailer in 35 ADP, Timecap'n Hooktail appeared within Tazavesh, the Veiled Market. Upon the prize of her heist, a relic of the Black Empire, being stolen by the broker So'leah, Captain Caulle Whiphook turned from her human form into her infinite dragon form. She was then attacked and killed by the Maw Walkers.

The Timewalkers and Chronormu confronting the infinite dragonflight at the Temporal Conflux.

After the discovery of the Dragon Isles in 40 ADP, the Dragon Aspects sought to find a disc containing the memories of Tyr within Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr, as they hoped it could help them reclaim their powers. However, before adventurers could retrieve it, the infinite dragon Chrono-Lord Deios sent the disc into another time. Deios intended to usher in the coming of the one true aspect, whose dominion shall be infinite.[28]

At the Temporal Conflux, the bronze flight's base in Thaldraszus, Eternus, and the infinite dragonflight attempted to corrupt the Bronze Oathstone, which would turn Nozdormu into Murozond. During their battle, Chronormu and Eternus fell across the timeways,[29] and once they returned to the present, Nozdormu allowed Eternus to leave, as she had helped Chromie to escape the Black Empire and return home. When the infinite dragon promised that she would corrupt Nozdormu eventually, the latter agreed with her conclusion, as he had sensed that his fate was drawing near.[30]

During the events of the Dawn of the Infinite, the infinite dragonflight made a bargain with Iridikron; in exchange for taking him to the time of Galakrond's demise, he would act as a distraction to any allies of the bronze dragonflight that sought to stop them. Their plan finally came to pass, as while Chromie and the adventurers were focused on stopping Iridikron, Chrono-Lord Deios did battle with the Proto-Aspects and seemingly corrupted the proto-dragon version of Nozdormu into Murozond. With this single time alteration, the infinites changed the history of Azeroth and created a new timeline - where Tyr notably never died and became a infinite-corrupt version of himself that guarded the Infinite Conflux. In order to restore Azeroth's timeline, Chromie and her allies made their way back into the past and aided the Proto-Aspects in stopping Deios, while Iridikron was able to successfully claim Galakrond's essence. In the aftermath, Nozdormu thanked adventurers for saving him from the fate that he thought was all but inevitable,[31] showing his belief that his transformation into Murozond is no longer an inevitability. However, it is unclear if the rise of Murozond has been completely averted.

The meeting between Nozdormu and Eternus.

With the help of Chromie, a meeting was eventually arranged between Nozdormu and Eternus, in the hopes of swaying the infinite dragon to their point of view.[32] The Timeless One himself admitted that while their flights viewed the timeline differently, he hoped to discuss peace between them, and eventually asked her to help him understand as he sought to mend the rift between their people. Reluctantly, Eternus revealed that she joined the infinite dragonflight due to the death of her sister Moraidormi, and most importantly, that she was not allowed to change the past to save her.[33] Seeking to understand the infinites, Nozdormu allowed Eternus to show them the past and attempt to save her sister.[34] Through this, Nozdormu was able to make Eternus see that Moraidormi had chosen to sacrifice her own life to save a hidden bronze whelping. Upon their return to the present, the Aspect of Time revealed that as a steward of the true timeline he must always take the greater good and free will of others into account, but that Eternus had reminded him that compassion should be considered, and that the one thing he agreed with the infinites was that some events were worth changing because their hearts wished it so. In response, Eternus acknowledged that Nozdormu never wished to become Murozond, promising to speak with the other infinites.[35]

Pandaria Remix

Some time after the death of Fyrakk, Eternus had herself questioning the rest of the "true timeline" and wondered if other moments of sorrow or anger had life-saving consequences. Thus, she and other like-minded members of the Infinite dragonflight turned to the events of Mists of Pandaria and recruited Timerunners to aid them. As the Timerunners experienced the Pandaria Campaign, Eternus and the rest of the Infinites watched in the hopes that they could reflect on the past with a new perspective.

Meanwhile, other members of the Infinite like Archaios the Artificer considered Eternus and her lot traitors and remained focused on wreaking havoc on the timeways. To that end, Eternus instructed her Timerunners to deal with them.[36]

Legion Remix

The Infinite Bazaar south of Dalaran.

As the The Worldsoul Saga heated up, Eternus and her fellow infinites decided to look into the events that led to it, in order to understand what really saved Azeroth from the Burning Legion.[37] Their presence created anomalies in this timeline, leading to an assault of the Legion on Dalaran, which they had to repel with the Timerunners. According to Eternus, these anomalies provided them with a unique opportunity to study the flow of time and the role of the individual in shaping history, but still, she had promised Nozdormu that this experiment would eventually come to an end and that they would soon all depart from this timeline.[38] Since their goal was to see how history would have played out if some of the variables were changed, Eternus recruited others kindred spirits, such as Hemet Nesingwary XVII, who traveled back in time to hunt the same critters as his ancestors. She also tasked Horos to collect rare things and creatures across time for study purposes.[39]

Upon learning that great forces threatened more than one world's future, Eternus and her flight isolated a fractured timeline for the Timerunners to explore, one devoid of all hope. She knew the Lord of Time wouldn't like this, but she had to hasten her study with experimentation, since it was the only way she could truly prepare the heroes for what was to come. Before they experimented with the Heroic World Tier, she explained to the Timerunners that she saw Xal'atath, Sargeras, and the Titan like puzzle pieces in the aether, all fitting together, but she didn't know how yet. In this dangerous timeline she isolated, Eternus subtly manipulated the Legion's forces to simulate what perils the heroes may face in the not-too-distant future, as she wondered how many timelines the heroes managed to repel the invasion.[40]

Warlords of Draenor beta

Removed from game The subject of this section did not make it out of the beta stages.

Very late in the Warlords of Draenor beta, an infinite drakonid known as the Infinite Vanguard was found outside the Caverns of Time. Infinite Pesterwings could also be found inside and around the caverns. Meanwhile, a time rift like those the infinites have been known to use appeared above the sands of Tanaris between the Caverns of Time and the Gaping Chasm. They were all removed before the final version of the game.

In the Across the Timeways expansion, the same corruption that once turned the bronze dragons into the infinites can also affect other species of life. From dracthyr and the Epoch Stalker to the Faceless Enigma, the Ruinous Velocidrake to the Fatebreaker subspecies of proto-dragon. Even the likes of King Mukla carried an infinite counterpart called King Maluk.
