Lor'tanis Kethlir was a powerful high elf magister who served as court chamberlain to Anasterian Sunstrider during his entire reign, spanning nearly three thousand years.

Biography

Born in Tranquillien, Kethlir was born into an influential family that had just recently gained power in the Convocation of Silvermoon. When Anasterian was crowned, Kethlir became his court chamberlain, and soon ingratiated himself with not only the new King, but also with the Council as well - particularly with the House of Whitehair. Lady Zirannye Whitehair, her son Dath'Kunam and her grandson Kel'theris became good friends with him, and in fact lived next door to his home on Feth's Way in western Silvermoon.

Though he made friends with many members of the Council, Kethlir also held an intense dislike for one - a magister named Dar'Khan Drathir. The dislike began to take root during the Troll Wars, when Dar'Khan would enter the Council chambers complaining about being called from "important work" (the nature of which never explained). There was one instance, during the Second War many centuries later, where Kethlir actually lost his temper with Dar'Khan, an instance he would later live to regret. It was also during the Troll Wars that Tranquillien, his home town, was put to the Amani torch - an act that was avenged by the alliance between Anasterian and Thoradin of Arathor.

Kethlir joined the Whitehair family heads as one of Anasterian's primary advisors, and remained at his side, enforcing and publicizing all of the King's decisions. He had called for an ambassador (Zirannye Whitehair) to be sent to Thoradin during the Troll Wars, and had also been open to suggestions of a scout force being sent to join the Alliance army during the Second War, as a token gesture of support to the pact made with Thoradin's bloodline (of which Anduin Lothar was the last member). Though he privately protested against the decision to pull Quel'Thalas out of the Alliance, Kethlir also acquiesced to Anasterian's judgment in this matter.

Considered seemingly ageless - despite being nearly as old as Anasterian, he was in remarkable health - Kethlir would meet his end in tragedy. Nearly two decades after Quel'Thalas withdrew from the Alliance, Quel'Thalas was besieged by Arthas Menethil, the corrupted Crown Prince of Lordaeron, on a quest to resurrect Kel'Thuzad in the waters of the Sunwell. Dar'Khan, unbeknownst to any others on the Council of Silvermoon, had allied himself with Arthas and led him right into Silvermoon itself. Kethlir fiercely questioned Dar'Khan's sanity - to which he received a blade thrown through his head, splitting his skull and killing him instantly. Anasterian and the remainder of the Council followed suit later - with the exception of Kel'theris Whitehair, who had the fortune of being in Dalaran at the time of Arthas' attack.

When Quel'Thalas was reclaimed by the newly-minted blood elves, Kethlir's body was buried in the cemetery outside of Tranquillien. His son and heir, Lor'revan, had betrayed his people sometime before Arthas' invasion, and had served Kel'Thuzad in the halls of Naxxramas. He remained a stain on the Kethlir name until he was slain by Ordevaas Portalseeker, Kel'theris Whitehair's son and heir and a renowned Horde ambassador. His younger son Varanil, who became head of house when Lor'revan's treachery became known, had joined with Kel'theris in their efforts to redeem the Kethlir name, which only became possible with Lor'revan's death.
