Gilneas is the name of the in-game starting zone for worgen players. In the overworld, the region is known as the Ruins of Gilneas and can be visited at any time.
Questing begins with Gilneas City under attack by feral worgen, then expands to the area surrounding the town of Duskhaven, showing the effects of the Cataclysm and the Forsaken invasion of Gilneas. It continues with the introduction of the night elves and the events of the Blackwald, building up to 
[1-30] The Battle for Gilneas City and the last stand against the Forsaken and Horde forces in the western section of the peninsula, and finally culminating in the exodus of the Gilneans to Darnassus.

Notes and trivia
- The Ruins of Gilneas were added as an accessible zone in patch 4.0.3a, two weeks before the release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm; it is what remains of Gilneas after the worgen starting area (similar to the Ruins of the Scarlet Enclave in the Eastern Plaguelands). Prior to patch 4.0.3a, on the other side of the Greymane Wall there was only a small, flat area, bordered by the ocean.
- Gilneas was once the only brand new zone that could be accessed without first having Cataclysm, though now all players can access Kezan and Gilneas without purchasing the expansion.
- Gilneas has some noticeable oversights when compared to other starting zones (or even Kezan/Lost Isles, which were added at the same time):
- The Cooking, First Aid and Fishing trainers were in somewhat out of the way areas and did not reappear later once the areas they were in became inaccessible - especially the Fishing trainer is easy to miss.
- There are no Beast type enemies for a while, which was not originally a problem, but became so when Shadowlands removed starting Hunter pets, forcing newly starting Worgen hunters to go without pets for quite a bit longer than hunters of other races.
- Past a certain point (leaving Duskhaven in
[1-30] To Greymane Manor) there are no vendors that sell, or can repair equipment, which can result in players becoming stuck should their equipment break. - Past a certain point (after leaving Stormglen Village in [1-30] Onwards and Upwards) there are no innkeepers or forced home location changes - using a
[Hearthstone] past that point can send the player back significantly. - At one point (between completing [1-30] Never Surrender, Sometimes Retreat and completing [1-30] Last Stand) a home location is set to the wrong area. Using a Hearthstone at that point will put the player in an area from where they cannot get back to where they need to be.
- There is a subzone (Northgate Woods) that is never used and is nearly impossible to reveal via normal means (the only way to uncover it on the map is by walking to a certain spot, then relogging there).
- Leaving Gilneas City before finishing the initial questing and heading to Stormglen Village reveals Stormglen Defenders and Stormglen Mastiffs fighting against Worgen Invaders, while Stormglen Villagers are cowering in fear, which might be a remnant from early development.
- Before Shadowlands, it was possible to re-enter the starting zone after the questing by simply flying high above the Greymane Manor at the spot where it changes from the Ruins of Gilneas to Gilneas, dismounting and dying, appearing in Duskhaven. From there either jump through mountains or bypass the western area to find the spirit healer in Gilneas City.
- Horde players questing in nearby Silverpine Forest have a small quest chain that involves venturing through the Ruins of Gilneas.
- If you get a view of the inner side of the wall you may see that the inner gate is broken down from the inside.
- After patch 3.1.0, the loading screen/ship route from Menethil Harbor to Theramore Isle no longer crosses Gilneas.
- Thorn sprites and sea hags were among the creatures that were concepted but never truly created for Gilneas.
