The Merchant Square after the Reclamation of Gilneas.

The Merchant Square is the northeastern section of Gilneas City. It connects to the Military District to the south, the Cathedral Quarter to the west, and the Livery Outpost to the northeast.

Following the Reclamation of Gilneas, the district was restored and became the main place of activity in the capital, including merchants, class trainers, a banker, and a mailbox.

The Merchant Square during the worgen attack.

On the day of the Wolf Cult's attack on Gilneas City, the capital was put under complete lockdown, and the people of the Merchant Square were ordered to join security perimeters to organize the evacuation. Many worgen could be seen running on the rooftops, which created panic among the civilians. At the same time, Prince Liam Greymane arrived with a regiment of soldiers and ordered them to secure the exits and expect to be outnumbered.[1] It is here that new Gilnean adventurers began their adventure, and they were ordered by the prince to follow the instructions of Lieutenant Walden. However, the latter was found brutally murdered in an alley, and the worgen began to attack the district.[2] Although their numbers were reduced during the fighting, the square was eventually overwhelmed by the worgen.[3] Prince Liam ordered the Gilnean adventurer to evacuate civilians to the Military District where King Genn Greymane and his troops could protect them.[4]

The square during the battle for Gilneas City.

During the battle for Gilneas City, Prince Liam made a speech at the entrance of the district, and announced the start of their fight to retake their capital from the Forsaken. He then led the charge, and the Gilnean Militia began clearing the area of all the Forsaken and the Dark Ranger Elite at their head. Once the district was secured, everyone headed in the direction of the Military District to continue the reconquest.[5]

Prior to the fall of Deathwing, the square fell under the control of the Blackhowl, a group of Gilneans who served Lord Hiram Creed, a black drakonid who disguised as an affluent Gilnean noble and used his corrupted blood to keep them under his command. According to Master Fahrad of the Assassin's League, Creed's goal was to ultimately loot the whole of Gilneas with his army, and if he succeeded, there would be no telling where he would hide next.[6] Creed was later assassinated by a rogue champion, sent by Wrathion during his crusade to eliminate all corrupted black dragons on Azeroth.[7]

The Merchant Square was ultimately abandoned when the Alliance and Horde forces left Gilneas City at the end of the conflict.[8]

The Merchant Square in the Emerald Dream.

During the Fourth War, Princess Tess Greymane was sent by Goldrinn on a spiritual journey into the Emerald Dream's version of Gilneas City, in order to learn more about the worgen curse.[9] She awoke in the Merchant Square during the battle for Gilneas City, this time, covered in lush vegetation. With the help of the Gilnean champion, Tess fought the Forsaken troops led by an apparition of Dark Ranger Thyala, and after their victory, the duo pursued an apparition of Nathanos Blightcaller towards the Military District.[10]

Over a decade later, following their defeat against the Forsaken in Silverpine Forest, the Scarlet Crusade managed to weasel their way into the peninsula and occupy Gilneas City, using it as their stronghold for their operations in Lordaeron. Led by Inquisitor Fairbell, they've filled the city with their most experienced forces.[11] The Merchant Square later returned under the control of the kingdom following the Reclamation of Gilneas. All debris, banners, and damage caused by the Forsaken were soon removed by the Gilnean Workers, making this district the most renovated of the capital. In time, the citizens returned to their homes, and many merchants and class trainers came to set up their stalls in the streets.
