History

Stoneward Prison in Curse of the Worgen.

Northgate Rebellion

At the end of the Northgate Rebellion, Lord Darius Crowley and the Northgate rebels were defeated by the kingdom's armies. Under the orders of King Genn Greymane, the majority of the rebellion's leaders, including Crowley, were then captured and imprisoned for high treason at the Stoneward Prison.[2]

Shortly before the attack on Gilneas City, Genn was thinking about granting Crowley amnesty.[3]

When the worgen began to run rampant in Gilneas, King Greymane sent Gilnean adventurers to free Lord Darius Crowley from the prison and secure his assistance in fighting off the worgen onslaught.[4] After being freed, Crowley gave his men a speech of a union in the courtyard, ordering them to leave behind the grudges of the civil war and to rejoin their Gilnean brethren against their common enemy.[5]

After Gilneas fell to the Forsaken, the prison courtyard was used to store parts for abominations. The massive flesh beast Gorerot, created to fight off the Gilneans, was fought and destroyed here.[6]

Prior to the fall of Deathwing, the prison fell under the control of the Blackhowl, a group of Gilneans who served Lord Hiram Creed, a black drakonid who disguised as an affluent Gilnean noble and used his corrupted blood to keep them under his command. They took up residence in the courtyard of the prison, where many Forsaken assassins' bodies could be found after their unsuccessful attempts to regain control of the place. In his crusade to eliminate all corrupted black dragons on Azeroth, Wrathion later sent his rogue champion to infiltrate the prison complex and assassinate Creed.[7]

The prison was ultimately abandoned when the Alliance and Horde forces left Gilneas City at the end of the conflict.[8]

The prison courtyard in the Emerald Dream.

During the Fourth War, Princess Tess Greymane was sent by Goldrinn on a spiritual journey into the Emerald Dream's version of Gilneas City, in order to learn more about the worgen curse.[9] As she and the Gilnean champion relived the battle for Gilneas City, they pursued an apparition of Nathanos Blightcaller through the Military District, which was overrun by Forsaken troops and covered in lush vegetation. However, as they finally killed the Champion of the Banshee Queen in the courtyard of the prison, Tess eventually began to lose control and fled the area towards the Greymane Court.[10]

Over a decade after their exile, the Stoneward Prison returned under the control of the kingdom following the Reclamation of Gilneas. In time, all the debris and experiment equipment left by the Forsaken were removed. After its restoration, the prison remained devoid of civilian presence, except for Tobias Mistmantle on the roof, reminiscing all the friends he lost here when the worgen attacked.
