The Military District after the Reclamation of Gilneas.

The Military District is the southeastern section of Gilneas City and was apparently focused on the Gilnean military. It connects to Merchant Square to the north, and Greymane Court to the west. The fortified complex known as the Stoneward Prison is a prominent feature here.

Following the Reclamation of Gilneas, the district was largely restored and the Gilnean citizens began returning to their homes after years of exile.

History

Northgate Rebellion

Following the end of the Northgate Rebellion and Lord Darius Crowley's imprisonment, the remaining Northgate rebels went into hiding. Many rebel weapon stashes throughout the city of Gilneas remained largely undiscovered, notably an arsenal hidden in Josiah Avery's cellar, right under the nose of the Gilnean military in the district. When eventually uncovered, the weapon stashes were said to have been powerful enough to take out half of the Military District.[1]

King Genn Greymane and the Gilnean forces fighting the feral worgen in Curse of the Worgen.

Four days before the worgen attack on Gilneas City, the detectives Halford Ramsey and Cox investigated an antique shop in the district after the murder of a woman, following the trail of the Starlight Slasher, the name given to the culprits responsible for the gruesome murders discovered across the kingdom. As they burst into the store, they discovered four men performing a ritual of the Wolf Cult, and Halford pursued the fleeing suspects on his horse through the streets, until they led him out of the capital in the direction of the Blackwald.[2]

On the day of the attack, King Genn Greymane led the Gilnean forces in battle. He ordered them to secure the citizens and hold ranks to face the coming waves of bloodthirsty beasts. At the same time, as he returned to the capital in his worgen form, Halford Ramsey heard the screams of a mother and daughter about to be devoured by a few beasts in one of the alleys. He managed to eliminate them but almost succumbed to the wild frenzy, and was narrowly chased away by the soldiers before he could harm them.[3]

The district during the battle for Gilneas City.

When the Merchant Square was overwhelmed by the worgen,[4] Prince Liam Greymane ordered a Gilnean adventurer to evacuate civilians from their homes, and take them to the Military District where King Greymane and his troops could protect them.[5] After he received the report, Genn ordered the release of Lord Darius Crowley and the Northgate rebels,[6] who agreed to let Greymane's forces made use of their hidden artillery stashes.[7][8] In order to get the weapons and cannons out of the basements, Lorna Crowley asked the adventurer to use one of her mastiffs to hunt down the worgen hidden in the streets.[9] During the chaos, the Royal Chemist Krennan Aranas was surrounded by the beasts, and once he was secured, the king ordered the evacuation towards the Greymane Court.[10]

During the battle for Gilneas City, after they cleared the Merchant Square, the Gilnean Militia led by Prince Liam were blocked by abominations at the entrance to the Military District, until they were given cannons in support by the citizens of Emberstone Village. Soon, they eliminated all the Forsaken forces there and united with Lord Crowley's worgen forces around Stoneward Prison, where the Forsaken unleashed upon the Gilneans one of their most powerful creations — the flesh beast known as Gorerot. However, they took control of Forsaken catapults and used them to take down Gorerot quickly, before continuing their assault at the Greymane Court.[11]

Prior to the fall of Deathwing, the district fell under the control of the Blackhowl, a group of Gilneans who served Lord Hiram Creed, a black drakonid who disguised as an affluent Gilnean noble and used his corrupted blood to keep them under his command. They took up residence in the courtyard of the Stoneward Prison, where many Forsaken assassins' bodies could be found after their unsuccessful attempts to regain control of the district. According to Master Fahrad of the Assassin's League, Creed's goal was to ultimately loot the whole of Gilneas with his army, and if he succeeded, there would be no telling where he would hide next.[12] In his crusade to eliminate all corrupted black dragons on Azeroth, Wrathion later sent his rogue champion to infiltrate the area and assassinate Creed.[13]

The Military District was ultimately abandoned when the Alliance and Horde forces left Gilneas City at the end of the conflict.[14]

The Military District in the Emerald Dream.

During the Fourth War, Princess Tess Greymane was sent by Goldrinn on a spiritual journey into the Emerald Dream's version of Gilneas City, in order to learn more about the worgen curse.[15] As she and the Gilnean champion relived the battle for Gilneas City, they pursued an apparition of Nathanos Blightcaller through the district, which was overrun by Forsaken troops and covered in lush vegetation. However, as they finally killed the Champion of the Banshee Queen in the courtyard of the Stoneward Prison, Tess eventually began to lose control and fled the area towards the Greymane Court.[16]

Over a decade later, following their defeat against the Forsaken in Silverpine Forest, the Scarlet Crusade managed to weasel their way into the peninsula and occupy Gilneas City, using it as their stronghold for their operations in Lordaeron. Led by Inquisitor Fairbell, they've filled the city with their most experienced forces.[17] The Military District later returned under the control of the kingdom following the Reclamation of Gilneas. All debris, banners and equipment left by the Forsaken were removed from the district and the Stoneward Prison, while Gilnean Workers could be seen carrying materials and repairing the damage caused by the conflicts that have taken place here. In time, the citizens returned to their homes, and most of them could be seen chatting or walking around the district.
