“Time to bring the true might of Gilneas and take our city back. My forces stand ready to charge!”
The Reclamation of Gilneas was a conflict opposing the Kingdom of Gilneas against the Scarlet Crusade for control of Gilneas City. Over a decade after the invasion of Gilneas, King Genn Greymane ordered the reconquest of his kingdom, at the time inhabited by the Crusaders after their failure to conquer the Ruins of Lordaeron. With the support of the 7th Legion, the operation was taken over by Princess Tess Greymane, who called upon the Desolate Council to defeat the zealots. After their success, Tess ascended the throne as the new Queen of Gilneas, ready to lead their people towards a better future.
History
Prelude
Following their defeat against the Forsaken in Silverpine Forest, the Scarlet Crusade managed to weasel their way into the peninsula and occupy the capital of Gilneas City. Led by Inquisitor Fairbell, they made their headquarters within Light's Dawn Cathedral and filled the capital with their most experienced forces.[1] A group of crusaders led by Consecrator Hennas also began to exhume the Gilnean corpses in Aderic's Repose, considering them tainted and warped by the worgen curse, they started to burn their bones in order to "return" them to the Light, all in an effort to purge the curse from the land. They also receive orders to eliminate any worgen and their allies on sight.[2]
Conflict
Shortly after the blooming of Amirdrassil on the Dragon Isles, King Genn Greymane declared that the time had come to reclaim the peninsula of Gilneas, and organized an offensive with Queen Mia and Princess Tess, supported by the 7th Legion and the Alliance under the command of Highlord Leoric Von Zeldig. Upon arriving at Keel Harbor, King Genn was shocked to find the Forsaken present, invited by Tess and led by Calia Menethil and Lilian Voss of the Desolate Council. Despite his apprehension, Genn was willing to trust his daughter's initiative, though he could not bring himself to personally lead the campaign alongside the undead due to their murder of Liam Greymane, and thus gave command of the operation to the princess.[3]
Under the orders of Calia,[4] the Forsaken's catapults in Northern Headlands and Northgate Woods bombarded the holy shields set up by the Crusaders in the Cathedral Quarter, creating a diversion for their allies.[3] Meanwhile, Tess, Voss, and the adventurer infiltrated the capital through the Undertaker's Pass,[5] in order to open the gates for their troops waiting outside. When King Genn learned of the Crusade in Aderic's Repose, he ordered Consecrator Hennas to be eliminated, refusing to allow the sacrifice of the Gilneans who died for their homeland to be defiled in this manner.[6]
After reducing the number of zealots and stealing some of their explosives,[1][7] Tess opened the gates and began the reconquest of their city. While fights broke out across the capital, the largest battle took place in the Cathedral Quarter, where the Gilneans faced the most powerful zealots and their leader.[8] Slowed by multiple defenses throughout the courtyard, Tess tasked the adventurer to use the explosives to destroy their barricades and artillery, so that their allies would have an easier time sieging the capital.[9]
While their troops cleaned the remaining crusaders, King Genn, Princess Tess, Calia Menethil, and the adventurer entered the cathedral to slay Fairbell.[10] Once she was eliminated, the allied forces gathered in the Cathedral Quarter to mark the end of the reconquest of Gilneas. It is also here, on the steps of the cathedral, that Genn reaffirmed his faith in his daughter and abdicated as the ruling king of Gilneas, declaring that Tess would henceforth reign as the new queen of Gilneas, ready to lead their people towards a better future.[11]
Aftermath
With Gilneas at last secure, the kingdom returned to the hands of its people while the Forsaken withdrew their forces as promised. In time, all the villages across the peninsula saw the return of their population, while the capital was largely restored by the Gilnean Workers, who could still be seen repairing the damage caused by the numerous conflicts over the past decade.
After the establishment of Bel'ameth, the night elven ship named the Moonlit Rose began providing transportation between Stormglen Village and Belanaar under the command of Talar Oaktalon.
