Bag

Bags are containers to increase inventory carrying capacity for holding other items. Players also frequently say bags when referring to their entire inventory space including the actual bags and base 16-slot backpack together.
Inventory space (or slots) is a limited resource so inventory management forms an important aspect of gameplay. Using more and larger bags to increase available inventory space furthers character development by providing the convenience to pick up more loot or carry more quest items. As the game has evolved, newer expansions have introduced larger bags to ease this burden.
Most normal bags can hold any sort of item, but differ in quantity of inventory slots. Special bags only hold specific types of items, usually related to a profession (e.g. [Herb Pouch]), but carry a larger quantity than normal bags of comparable cost. This disparity was greatest in World of Warcraft: Classic, but has narrowed in recent expansions as larger normal bags become available.
Equipping and using
Players equip bags by placing them in the bag slots at the right-most end of the interface bar adjacent to the backpack, a special bag that is neither movable nor replacable. Doing so provides added inventory slots based on the size of the bag.
Although bags are tradable and might sit unequipped within inventory, they are empty in this state and therefore do not contribute to inventory management until equipped. In addition to four bags worn on a chartacter (and always accessible), characters may also purchase up to seven bag slots to expand bank capacity (limited accessability).
Similar to equippable gear, most bags become untradable once worn in a bag slot (character or bank) and large bags from unique sources tend to bind on pickup. However, bags may be freely unworn if are empty or replaced by another large enough to hold any remaining contents. Some bags are also unique, preventing more than one of the same kind from being worn simultaneously.
Fortunately, unlike most equippable gear, bags do not have minimum level requirements so they may be traded or sold to lower-level characters to provide a quality of life boost for beginning players or alts.
Bags are not visually displayed on the character in the game; other players cannot know how many bags you have equipped nor their contents.
Management features
These features are not present in World of Warcraft: Classic
- The backpack provides a search bar that applies to all bags. It darkens the items in your bags that do not meet the entered search criteria, allowing the sought-for item to stand out brightly. Similar search bars exist at the bank and Void Storage.
- The backpack also provides a sorting feature, integrated with a dropdown menu selectable on each bag, to sort items of certain types into each bag.
- At vendors, grey items appear with a gold coin icon to help users quickly see what may be sold without consequence.
Aside from managing bag contents, subsequent expansions introduced new interface designs to manage ever-expanding clutter:
- Void storage, later obsoleted by user-interface improvements to transmogrification however can still be used to keep wanted items like a non-unique Legendary or a rare drop such as the
[Teebu's Scorching Straight Sword].
- Collections tab: Mounts tab, Pet Journal, Toy Box, Heirlooms tab, and Appearances

Q: I think a lot of people would like to see some more options for inventory storage are there plans for any of the following? Bank slots/Equipment manager storage/Upgrade backpack/storage for costume, cosmetic, toys/tabard storage. – Shinysparkle (North America/ANZ)
A: We do have some storage solutions in the works. We’d like to convert tabards in particular to something like the current UI to manage titles. We don’t want to just keep giving players larger and larger bags in which to lose items. We’re focusing more on better ways to organize items.

Normal bags come in a variety of sizes and are used to store all the items you obtain through your adventures. They come in sizes ranging from 1 to 36 slots, and typically they are widely available on the Auction House because many bags are created and sold by tailors. Their prices, particularly in smaller sizes, are constrained by the wide availability of many vendors who also sell normal bags to adventurers. (See table at right.) New players unwilling to pay even these prices will also find that bags can drop in the normal course of playing the game.
Ammo bags
Ammo bags like quivers and ammo pouches can only hold ammunition (arrows or bullets respectively). Of course, this is only useful to characters who use ammunition: hunters, and with weapons training, rogues and warriors.
Identical ammunition stored in multiple slots in an ammo bag will be automatically re-equipped when a stack of ammo runs out. Ammo that is different in any way is not automatically equipped. This can lead to confusion or delays, so many players only store one kind of ammo in an ammo bag at a time.
Ammo bags display the number of shots remaining on their action bar icons, whenever the number of shots falls below 10000 (10 stacks).[citation needed]
Essentially, an ammo bag is a hunter item. While rogues and warrior can, with weapon training, benefit from an ammo pouch, the truth is that they will probably choose to forgo carrying an ammo pouch. Hunters burn through large quantities of ammunition. Rogues and warriors shoot occasionally to pull an enemy from a distance. Since ammo bags are less versatile than conventional bags, rogues and warriors will generally prefer to have general purpose bag space holding a stack or two of ammo.
Hunters start with a six-slot quiver, [Light Quiver], or ammo pouch,
[Small Ammo Pouch], that holds the ammo of their starting ranged weapon.
Quivers and ammo pouches follow a similar size progression, ranging from the six slot hunter starting quiver or ammo pouch to the 24 slot gear, which is only usable by level 70 characters. Ammo bags with 10 slots and above have increasing level requirements to equip. Ammo stacks in stacks of 1000, so even a beginning ammo bag can hold 6000 rounds of ammo.
(Ammo bags also tend to be larger than regular bags of the same item level, but since general purpose bags have no level restrictions, it may be easier to obtain regular bags bigger than your ammo bag.)
Ammo bags can be made by Leatherworkers, purchased from the auction house and vendors, or obtained as quest rewards. The source of each size increment of ammo bag is unique or a unique type ('crafted' or 'vended'), with minor exceptions. For the eight-slot quiver and ammo pouch, there is a vendor version (1 at Neutral), and a crafted version. The Alliance quest,
[5-30] Vyrin's Revenge, Loch Modan, rewards the character with a choice of a ten slot quiver or ammo pouch.
Prior to patch 3.1.0, ammo bags generally gave a Rate of Fire bonus of between 10 and 15 percent, shortening the cooldown on the Shoot or [Auto Shot] ability.
Soul bags
- Main article: Soul bag
A soul bag was a bag usable only by warlocks to hold Soul Shards. Although a warlock was not required to use a Soul Bag, they could hold more Soul Shards than they would normally be able to carry in conventional containers.
Soul Shards harvested by the Warlock were automatically stored in an equipped Soul Bag when acquired, making tedious Soul Shard housekeeping a thing of the past.
Only Soul Shards could be stored in Soul Bags. If you wished to convert a Soul Shard into any other type of inventory item (such as a [Healthstone] or
[Soulstone]) you would need extra space in your normal bags to hold the new item.
As Soul Shards are no longer physical items, all Soul bags have been converted to normal bags with fewer slots.
Profession bags
There are a number of profession-specific bags to hold larger quantities of certain materials and products. Players do not need to actually have the profession to equip these, so they may benefit from using bags intended for other professions. For example, jewelcrafting uses lots of gems that can fit inside a mining bag.
Like general purpose bags, craft bags have no explicit level requirements. Currently, all craft bags are Bind on Equip.
Dragonflight reintroduces profession bags as Reagent Bags, which can contain everything that counts as a reagent. It also introduces a special bag slot that only Reagent bags can be equipped to.
The War Within introduces a different version of a profession bag. Said bags act like regular bags (everything can be put in them), but the bags provide the bonus to a specific profession just by having them equipped.
Trivia
[Whizzlespark's Portable Pet Mansion] was meant as a bag to store pets but was ultimately scrapped in favor of the Pet Journal in Wrath of the Lich King.

Patch changes
Patch 10.0.2 (2022-11-15): Reagent bag slot added.
Patch 7.3.5 (2018-01-16): Added 4 extra bag slots if an Authenticator and SMS protection is connected.
Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14):
- Some quest items no longer take up space in the inventory and can be accessed through the Quest Tracker.
- Items in the inventory now have a colored border around them to indicate their quality from Poor (grey) to Legendary (orange).
- Bags can now be assigned to a specific item type (Equipment, Consumables, and Trade Goods). The bag will display a mini-icon showing what type of item it's assigned to.
- Added a "Clean up Bags" button to automatically sort items in the character's inventory, moving all empty slots to one area, and automatically sorting items to the correct bag. There's also the option to ignore a bag from cleanup.
Patch 4.3.0 (2011-11-29): A search feature has been added.
Patch 4.0.3a (2010-11-23): Bags that you loot and are non-BoE will automatically take up a bag slot if available slots are open, instead of landing in your inventory. You will still be able to "un-equip" the bag and trade it if it's not BoP.
