Tie-in literature

Development

The War Within was designed to deliver content for all players in accordance with the amount of time available to them for gaming. Compared to Dragonflight, The War Within has smaller zones, but with more detail in them. Family is one of the expansion's themes, represented in elements such as the Bronzebeard clan and the journey of Alleria Windrunner.[5]

The expansion's storyline was worked on by Chris Metzen and Terran Gregory. One of Metzen's ideas was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft, and ergo, bring in the "heavy hitters" of the IP (e.g. Thrall, Jaina Proudmoore, and Anduin Wrynn). A balancing act had to be struck between gathering these characters, but ensuring that they didn't hog the spotlight too much. Various scenarios had to be designed to get them out of the way in order to give the player characters agency, and the characters introduced in the expansion space to breathe.[6]

Work on War Within was carried out simultaneously with Midnight and The Last Titan.[6] Additionally, Blizzard Entertainment revealed plans to release new expansions and content at a faster pace than before.[7]
