Azj-Kahet is a subterranean zone located in the deepest part of Khaz Algar, south and below Hallowfall and the Ringing Deeps. The high capital of nerubian society,[1] Azj-Kahet is home to the last kingdom of living nerubians. Unlike Azjol-Nerub, which was consumed by the Scourge, Azj-Kahet represents nerubian society as it once was—deadly survivors of mythic wars that have played out time and again over millennia. The zone is dominated by the sprawling City of Threads, which has been built on top of itself over and over as its districts decay, with the highest locations reserved for the wealthy and those who have the favor of Queen Ansurek. Azj-Kahet also features areas of dark and beautiful wilds, inhabited by other creatures who have found ways to live alongside the nerubians.[2][3]

With the Black Empire destroyed and the Old Gods dead,[2][3] Xal'atath, the Harbinger of the Void, has traveled to Azj-Kahet to conscript its inhabitants into a new army to bring Azeroth to its knees.[4] She has entered a bargain with Ansurek, offering her people the opportunity to rise from their isolation and become a powerful kingdom once again, and in return for their loyalty has provided a way to evolve chosen nerubians into a new kind of powerful soldiers. The nerubians now harvest the Black Blood of the Old Gods within Nerub-ar Palace and are engaged in a continuous assault against the Arathi of neighboring Hallowfall. However, not all nerubians agree with Ansurek, and they have begun to maneuver against her and Xal'atath's plans.[2][3]
