Neptune was the codename of a Warcraft mobile MMO, developed by Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase.

History

Neptune entered development in 2019. It was envisioned as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the same universe as World of Warcraft. It wouldn’t be a direct translation of the game but a spinoff,[1] set in the far past of Azeroth.[2]

The project was canceled in 2022. The two companies disagreed over terms and ultimately called a halt to the project.[1] Another issue was that the Chinese government had put a freeze on new videogame releases during this period.[3] The development team, which consisted of more than 100 individuals, was disbanded, only some of whom were offered internal transfers.[1]
