Overview
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft, the Worldsoul Saga is an epic storyline envisioned as a culmination of the first two decades of World of Warcraft storytelling and as a way to set stage for the next 20 years of adventure. Revolving around the fate of Azeroth's world-soul, the true long-term intentions of the Pantheon of Order, a potential final, apocalyptic confrontation between the Light and the Void, and many other story hooks, the Worldsoul Saga is (in the words of Executive Creative Director Chris Metzen) "so epic it cannot be contained within any single expansion" and is instead built to play out over multiple expansions. With this grand scale in mind, Team 2 are working on multiple ways to deliver this narrative to players "a little faster" than previous expansions.[3]
The War Within (2024)
- Main article: World of Warcraft: The War Within
In World of Warcraft: The War Within, the opening chapter of the Worldsoul Saga set to release on 26 August 2024, players will venture into subterranean kingdoms in the heart of Azeroth itself as the forces of the Void, led by the Harbinger Xal'atath, close in on the world-soul.[3]
Midnight (TBD)
- Main article: World of Warcraft: Midnight
In World of Warcraft: Midnight, players will return to the elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas and fight back against the forces of the Void that have invaded Azeroth and seek to plunge the world into darkness.[3]
The Last Titan (TBD)
- Main article: World of Warcraft: The Last Titan
In World of Warcraft: The Last Titan, the third and final chapter of the Worldsoul Saga, players will once again return to the old world, this time the continent of Northrend, where they will witness the Pantheon's return to Azeroth and uncover an ancient conspiracy that stretches through the history of the world.[3]
Notes
Development of the saga was spearheaded by Chris Metzen.[4] After returning to Blizzard, he spearheaded ideas for The War Within that would be impractical to implement within the context of a single expansion, hence the expansion of said ideas into a trilogy.[5] By September 2024, the overall story of the trilogy was set, though the writers are allowed to pivot if necessary.[6]
