Hallowfall is a subterranean zone in Khaz Algar, located below and to the west of the Ringing Deeps and north and above Azj-Kahet. Hallowfall is a landscape of verdant plateaus and river canyons bordered to the west by the endless Undersea, all within an enormous cavern. Beledar, an immense crystal lodged into the cavern ceiling, provides light, warmth, and growth for vegetation, creating a bright and lush environment reminiscent of the surface world. It is inhabited by the Hallowfall Arathi, an expedition of the Arathi Empire. From their capital of Mereldar, the Arathi use their airships to travel throughout the cavern and establish docks, farms, and villages.[1][2]

The Arathi settled in the area more than a decade before the events of The War Within,[3] after the Arathi emperor received a vision from the Sacred Flame of Hallowfall and a source of radiant light, the "Emperor's Vision".[4] The Hallowfall Expedition traveled across the Storming Sea to seek out the vision, until their fleet of airships was enveloped in Light from the Emperor's Vision and magically transported into Hallowfall. The resulting crash left them stranded and cut off from the Empire. The land in Hallowfall proved fertile, and the survivors settled in the cavern under the light of the Emperor's Vision, the "star" they named Beledar.[4][5][6][7] Years later, Hallowfall was shook by the Day of Darkness—the day Sargeras plunged his sword into Azeroth[8]—and Beledar began periodically shifting into a Void state.[4][6] The Arathi now fight a near-constant battle against kobyss raiders emerging from the Undersea as well as from swarms of nerubians from neighboring Azj-Kahet.[1][2] The Arathi consider Hallowfall to be a holy land, a revelation of the Sacred Flame that it is their duty to protect and cleanse from darkness.[4][5][9][10]

Getting there

Players access Hallowfall via the Hallowfall Gate in Ringing Deeps and enter via Lothar's Landing. From there, players can access Azj-Kahet via the Aegis Wall in the southeastern part of the zone, or Light's Redoubt in the southwest.

Notes and trivia

  • All of the flora in Hallowfall is turned toward Beledar, much like plants on the surface following the sun.[1][11]
  • The original version of the official site for The War Within erroneously described the Hallowfall Arathi as "a human tribe who have battled against nerubians for centuries",[12] rather than a recently-arrived branch of the Arathi Empire. The description was corrected on November 17, 2023.[13]
  • During The War Within beta, Wenren Althal's dialogue stated that the Hallowfall Arathi had set out from the Empire fifteen years prior to The War Within,[14] while the quest N [75-78] Mereldar's Light stated that they'd had arrived to Hallowfall ten years prior to The War Within.[15] Prior to release, the former reference was changed to a vaguer "over a decade ago"[3] and the latter was removed entirely.
  • Hallowfall appears to be inspired by the Hollow Earth trope commonly seen in subterranean fiction. Many Hollow Earth stories portray a lush underground world sustained by an inner sun, often also featuring a subterranean ocean and lost civilizations of ancient humans.
