The Scarlet Monastery, once known as the Old Monastery,[2] is a fortified monastery located in the northeast corner of the blighted Tirisfal Glades, it was once a cathedral of the Church of the Holy Light, which was taken over by the Scarlet Crusade after the end of the Third War.
Following the Cataclysm, the Scarlet Monastery was one of the last strongholds in the world that belonged to the fanatical Scarlet Crusade, as the Scarlet Bastion within the ruins of Stratholme, the town of Hearthglen, the town of Tyr's Hand and the Scarlet Enclave all fell under the control of the Argent Crusade. At the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the remaining zealots of the Scarlet Crusade gathered at the monastery where they were massacred by the Knights of the Ebon Blade.
The Scarlet Monastery is a complex of two instanced dungeons, Scarlet Halls and Scarlet Monastery. Heroic mode is available for both wings at level 35.
From the World Dungeons page on the official World of Warcraft Community Site:
The Old Monastery used to be under the sponsorship of the noble house of Godwyn. Their heir Blake Godwyn notably spent many years there as archivist up until the First War. Other remarkable archivists Primwell Skye and Janet Kaitway operated there too up until their own retirement or departure.[2]
In addition to holding extensive libraries, the Monastery also served as a seminary for paladins-in-training.[3][4] In his youth, Alexandros Mograine spent months training and praying here.[5]
The quiet days of the monastery eventually ended with the Third War and fall of Lordaeron.[2]

Following the Third War, the remaining Knights of the Silver Hand in Lordaeron, led by Highlord Alexandros Mograine, decided to use the Old Monastery as a defensible forward base Tirisfal Glades, with the goal of regaining control of Capital City from the Forsaken. When they arrived they found a jungle troll named Zabra Hexx who made the monastery his home, and learned the ways of the Light from its books. While Brigitte Abbendis and Lord Maxwell Tyrosus argued over the troll's fate, Alexandros decided to spare him after discovering his connection to the Light. Later, the Silver Hand splintered into the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn.[5]
The Crusaders then returned in force to the Monastery, reclaiming it from lingering Scourge presence. Brother William Powell drove the spider infestation from the sacred building's halls, but got poisoned in the process.[2] After its full reclamation, the Crusade renamed the place to Scarlet Monastery.[6]
Later, Inquisitor Whitemane and Renault Mograine personally relocated here. Not only did it become a home of the Crusade, but it also was a military area as well as a place for their prisoners. When the Crusade learned about a Scourge attack on Hearthglen, Renault commanded Whitemane to gather a squad of soldiers and head to Hearthglen. As Whitemane left, Darion Mograine, guided by the voice of the Ashbringer, arrived to the Monastery, where the voice manifested into the spirit of Alexandros who killed Renault for his betrayal in the Monastery's chapel.[7]
After the battle at the Light's Hope Chapel, there was a meeting between Castillian, Balnazzar, and Varimathras taking place north of the Scarlet Monastery.[8]
At some point after the formation of the Scarlet Crusade, the Monastery was attacked by the Scourge three times in the Summertide Assaults.[9]
Several Forsaken were captured and brought to the monastery, being interrogated by Halbin. During one night of torture, anger overwhelmed him, and for only a brief instant, his hold over Light's Wrath slipped. An explosion rocked the torture chamber and engulfed Halbin in holy fire. It is said he died a slow death, his howls of agony ringing through the Scarlet Monastery for days on end.[10]

During the Hallow's End in Year 24, the Headless Horseman was created in the Monastery by Balnazzar using fel energies over the dead body of Thomas Thomson.[11]

Raleigh the Devout once believed in the cause of the Scarlet Crusade to rid Azeroth of the undead. As he spent time at the Monastery, he realized that the Crusade's grasp on reality was slipping because they thought everyone was plagued who didn't wear the tabard of the Crusade. Innocent men and women were tortured because they were supposedly plagued.[12]
Meven Korgal was sent from the Monastery to spy on Deathknell.[13]

The Alliance helped the Scarlet renegades, a small faction of rebel Crusaders who aimed to take over the monastery. They were led by their increasingly unhinged champion, Joseph the Insane. The Horde assisted a contingent of Forsaken troops and abominations, led by Dark Ranger Velonara in annexing the Monastery for good. Neither side was ultimately successful, and the Monastery remained firmly under the control of the Scarlet Crusade.

Despite heavy losses across all fronts, the Scarlet Crusade has survived within the Scarlet Monastery. Here, the remaining crusaders prepare to continue their battle against the undead and those they judge guilty of carrying the taint of undeath. However, a mysterious Hooded Crusader seems intent on taking them down from the inside.

During the Burning Legion's third invasion, the remnants of the Scarlet Crusade regrouped at the Monastery under the command of High Commander Goodchilde.
At one point, the champions of the Knights of the Ebon Blade entered the Monastery in order to retrieve the saddle of Thomas Thomson's steed, killing Faralis the Fanatic in the process.[14] Later they were assaulted a second time by the Ebon Blade and the Deathlord who crushed the remains of the fanatical organization to raise Sally Whitemane as one of their own.[15]

Following the end of the third invasion and the Fourth War, Mathias Shaw mentioned in his reports that the Scarlet Crusade was totally wiped out by the Knights of the Ebon Blade when they went to the Monastery to resurrect Sally Whitemane.[16]

Following the awakening of the Dragon Isles, Sir Thomas reached out to the adventurers who set him free years ago and met him in front of the monastery.[17] Seeking atonement for his sins, starting with his family, he found out that the spirit of his wife Suzannah was missing and resolved to find clues at the monastery.[18] In time the pair discovered Suzannah, only for her to warn that it was a trap. Before they could react, the Scarlet Cultist Jerome Hayton trapped Thomas in shadows, while declaring that the Headless Horseman was meant to cleanse this world by Grand Crusader Dathrohan's will. Thomas was subsequently once more transformed into the Headless Horseman and swiftly killed Hayton before retreating into the Scarlet Monastery.[19]
Determined to save him, Suzannah implored adventurers for aid. After the Headless Horseman was defeated and Thomas restored, husband and wife reunited and departed for the afterlife.[20]

The original wings were removed in Mists of Pandaria and were only available to players on Classic realms. In patch 10.1.7, [The Scarlet Key] started dropping from the
[Loot-Filled Pumpkin], awarded to players once per day after defeating the Headless Horseman encounter during Hallow's End. The key is not bound and can be traded or sold on the Auction House.
While in possession of the key, head to the Grand Vestibule of the Scarlet Monastery exterior to spot an Old Keyring at [48.3, 56.3] or [83.9, 23.4]
in Tirisfal Glades coordinates. It starts
[1-80] The Scarlet Key, which unlocks the original instances. Click on the keyring again to toggle on The Scarlet Key buff, which changes the destination of the instance lines in the Vestibule to the original instances.
Inside, defeat Arcanist Doan in the Scarlet Monastery Library and loot Doan's Strongbox to acquire another Scarlet Key, which can also be traded or sold on the Auction House. This strongbox-granted key may only be acquired once per week per account.

Instead of being situated in the Tirisfal Glades, the Scarlet Monastery was said to actually be a newly-erected building in the center of Tyr's Hand.[21]
