Highlord Darion Mograine[4]

The Knights of the Ebon Blade are an organization of renegade death knights freed from the grasp of the Lich King during the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel. Regrouped under the banner of Highlord Darion Mograine, they took control of Acherus: The Ebon Hold as their headquarters, and cooperated with the Argent Crusade to defeat Arthas Menethil during the Scourgewar in Northrend. After getting their vengeance, the death knights found themselves without a cause and without a home. One by one they trickled into the land of the living in search of a new purpose.[5] They dedicated themselves to the protection of Azeroth, and some of their members rejoined the ranks of the Alliance and Horde, of which they were members before their death against the Scourge. They fight as hard for the safety of Azeroth as anyone living.[6]

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the death knights and the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon came to an agreement: they would help him get revenge on the Legion, and in return, he would keep the Scourge contained and help them with powerful weapons. The Ebon Blade later fought alongside the other orders, united as the Armies of Legionfall, and moved their order hall above the Broken Isles.

At the end of the Fourth War, the Ebon Blade expanded its rank with the heroes who died honorably on the battlefields. After Sylvanas Windrunner defeated him and destroyed the Helm of Domination, piercing the Veil between Azeroth and the Shadowlands, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon took the lead of the Ebon Blade. The death knights assisted the Alliance, Horde, and the Argent Crusade during the resurgence of the Scourge across the world, then followed the heroes and their new leader in the realm of death to stop Zovaal the Jailer and his Mawsworn.

Since the fall of the Banished One, the death knights returned to Azeroth, focusing their efforts on safeguarding Icecrown Citadel and preventing the Scourge from spreading across Azeroth.

Battle for Light's Hope Chapel

Main articles: Death Knights of Acherus, Battle for Light's Hope Chapel

The Knights of the Ebon Blade were originally an army of Scourge death knights trained in the halls of Acherus: The Ebon Hold. Under the direct command of the Lich King, the Death Knights of Acherus were formed for the specific purpose of destroying both the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn, the last bastions of the Light in the Plaguelands.[7] Through a bloody campaign, they managed to destroy Havenshire, New Avalon, and the forces of the Scarlet Crusade in the Scarlet lands.[8].[9]

During the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel, the Lich King's greatest objective was to draw Tirion Fordring out of his hiding; by destroying this legendary figure, he hoped to erode the resolve of the defenders of Azeroth before the next stage of his campaign. Ten thousand Scourge troops were assembled for this task, led by Highlord Darion Mograine wielding the Corrupted Ashbringer, along with Orbaz Bloodbane, Koltira Deathweaver, and Thassarian as his lieutenants. Their foes were a comparatively few three hundred defenders of the Light and what remained of the Argent Dawn's leadership, assembled at the Light's Hope Chapel. The undead proved successful in their initial objective, annihilating a third of the Argent Dawn's defenders before Tirion emerged to defend the chapel. Assisted by his Knights of the Silver Hand, Fordring overpowered Mograine and called upon the Light to face the might of the Scourge.[10]

In the end, the Death Knights of Acherus knew defeat, and after Highlord Mograine ordered them to stand down, Tirion revealed that this battle was anything but a suicide mission. After the soul of Alexandros Mograine appeared and talked with Darion, the Lich King himself joined the battlefield and claimed the spirit of the Ashbringer with Frostmourne. Realizing the depths of the betrayal, Darion lashed out at his master with his wrath, only to be easily cast aside and incapacitated along with the other death knights. As the Lich King taunted his nigh-inevitable victory, claiming the soul of Tirion with his cursed blade, Highlord Mograine resisted his master's control just enough to give Tirion the corrupted Ashbringer. The paladin drew upon the power of the Light, cleansing it in a blinding flash of energy, and managed to repel the Dark Lord of the Scourge. Aware that even he stood little chance against the Ashbringer near Light's Hope Chapel, the Lich King retreated back to Icecrown Citadel in Northrend.[10]

After the battle concluded, Fordring called for the union of the Argent Dawn and the Silver Hand into the Argent Crusade. With their free will restored, Highlord Mograine also pledged himself and his death knights to bring an end to the Lich King, naming his new order the Knights of the Ebon Blade.[11] In order to survive, their first battle was to capture Acherus from Patchwerk and the Scourge remnants within.[12][13] From their new base of operations, Darion sent the death knight heroes back to their people among the Alliance and the Horde, carrying letters on behalf of Tirion for their audiences with King Varian Wrynn in Stormwind City and Warchief Thrall in Orgrimmar. Despite their distrust, both leaders were convinced to accept the death knights in their factions, and ordered that they should be treated with respect as former heroes.[14][15]

Meanwhile, the surviving death knights loyal to the Scourge returned to Icecrown and formed the Host of Suffering, with Orbaz Bloodbane as their leader.[16]

Northrend invasion

Main article: War against the Lich King
Acherus: The Ebon Hold, the necropolis and headquarters of the Knights of the Ebon Blade.

When the war against the Lich King began, the Knights of the Ebon Blade launched the invasion of Northrend alongside the Alliance, Horde, and Argent Crusade forces. The disastrous Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate broke a tenuous trust that had only just begun to form between both factions, and nearly ended the conflict before it had truly been joined. It was then the Ebon Blade and the Argent Crusade that took over the push for Arthas' head, and kept both factions from forgetting entirely who the true enemy was.[17] The two neutral organizations had rallied their forces to unleash a new offensive against the undead across the frozen continent. Working in tandem, the death knights and paladins focused their attention on Zul'Drak, where the Ebond Blade established Ebon Watch as a small outpost and from there conducted their own operations—and some in cooperation with the Argent Crusade.[6]

Advance on Icecrown

In Icecrown, after the Shadow Vault fell under the control of the death knights led by Duke Lankral, the destruction of the vrykul village Jotunheim was one of the projects of Ebon Blade.[18] Under the oders of Lankral, the adventurers were tasked to fight the vrykul at the Savage Ledge[19] and kill their leader Thane Ufrang the Mighty.[20] After this, the heroes were sent to free the captive death knights,[21] weaken the vrykul resolve by burning their banners,[22] to help the Bone Witch wreaking havoc from within,[23] to burn down their buildings,[24] to plant the Ebon Blade banners in the bodies of their fallen warriors,[25] and also to slay their proto-dragons.[26]

During the most intense phase of the battle in Icecrown, the Argent Crusade received information about Arthas' heart,[27] which had to be transported to the Cathedral of Darkness. When the Lich King himself came to confront them, Tirion Fordring struck the organ with the Ashbringer, critically injuring the Lich King in an explosion that knocked the Highlord unconscious. As the Argent champions moved to defend Tirion from the surrounding cultists, Highlord Darion Mograine and a force of Ebon Knights arrived, holding back the tide of Scourge forces and allowing those gathered to escape through a portal.[28]

As the sole way for any kind of force to invade Icecrown Citadel would be to breach Mord'rethar: The Death Gate, Aldur'thar: The Desolation Gate and Corp'rethar: The Horror Gate, each made almost entirely of saronite, near indestructible, and manned by massive Scourge constructs, the efforts of the death knights Thassarian and Koltira Deathweaver working with the Alliance and the Horde allowed the defenders of Azeroth to pass these defenses.[29]

As the Ebon Blade and Argent Crusade carved out small footholds near the Citadel, they spent weeks carefully observing the tactics and movements of the Scourge. Despite their differences, the paladins and the death knights had shared information with one another and reached the same conclusions: the Lich King was prepared to absorb heavy losses in a ground assault because the Scourge would inflict heavy losses in return, and everyone who died would rise again as his minions.[30]

Fall of the Lich King

The Ebon Blade and Argent Crusade united as the Ashen Verdict in Icecrown Citadel.

As armies began to prepare for the assault on Icecrown Citadel, the Argent Crusade and the Knights of the Ebon Blade launched preliminary attacks on its defenses. In the lead-up to the final battle, the Argent Crusade forged a new alliance with the Knights of the Ebon Blade, one which would lead the assault on the Icecrown Citadel's defenses, the Ashen Verdict was born; united, they gathered in the mighty fortress's shadow to begin the assault. The Ashen Verdict eventually forged a staging ground just inside the citadel's main entrance, which they named Light's Hammer, while the champions of Azeroth leaped forward to bring down the Lich King.[31]

After the fall of Arthas Menethil and the ascension of Bolvar Fordragon on the Frozen Throne, Highlord Darion Mograine told the adventurers that while the future was unknown, he was certain that nothing would have been possible without their aid and gave them the salute of the Knights of the Ebon Blade.[32]

Cataclysm

Although the Argent Crusade still stood by the Forsaken heroes who fought against the Scourge, Sylvanas Windrunner's actions since the fall of Arthas Menethil had deeply concerned the crusaders. They, along with certain members of the Ebon Blade, decided to watch the Banshee Queen very closely, as similarities between her and the Lich King kept increasing in number by the day.[33]

Warlords of Draenor

WoD-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

During the war in Draenor, the Knights of the Ebon Blade offered their aid to the Alliance and Horde commanders. If the latters were exalted with the order, Ebon Blade death knights could be called to defend the garrisons of Frostwall and Lunarfall. Among them, Human Death Knights and Orc Death Knights could also be recruited as followers. A death knight adventurer was later encountered in the Spires of Arak.

Taking the chance to discover the secrets of Ner'zhul, Highlord Darion Mograine traveled to Lunarfall Inn or Frostwall Tavern in alternate Draenor. Though the Lich King had been defeated, Darion claimed that they were no closer to unlocking the secrets of the Frozen Throne than they were when jousting pointlessly at the Argent Tournament. In the meantime, Bolvar Fordragon remained resigned to his fate, while Darion believed that perhaps there was something there that could aid their cause. After he asked the faction commanders to find whatever they could of Ner'zhul's early studies, their forceds eventually returned with a Dark Parchment from the Shadowmoon Burial Grounds, which Darion brought back to the Acherus: The Ebon Hold.[34]

Legion

Main article: Death Knight Campaign
The Lich King Bolvar on top of Acherus.

Following the return of the Burning Legion, the Knights of the Ebon Blade came to an agreement with Bolvar Fordragon: they would willingly act as the Lich King's agents against the demons, if the Scourge remained contained to Northrend. The Lich King offered powerful weapons to champions of the Ebon Blade, he directed a student of Lord Thorval to the world of Niskara to defeat Gorelix the Fleshripper and take the  [Maw of the Damned]. He sent a student of Lady Alistra to the catacombs beneath Karazhan to obtain  [Apocalypse] from the Dark Riders. For the one trained by Amal'thazad, the Lich King summoned them directly to Icecrown Citadel, where they gathered the broken shards of Frostmourne to reforge them into a pair of new weapons, the Blades of the Fallen Prince. Once the artifacts were recovered, the champions were brought to the Frozen Throne and granted the Lich King's blessing, empowered to act in his name against the Legion.

On the Broken Shore, the Knights of the Ebon Blade sent packs of ghouls to fight against the demons,[35] and created new death knights from the casualties of the Alliance and the Horde.[36]

The Deathlord and Thassarian later set out to reform the Four Horsemen, adding new powerful champions into their ranks. The first was General Nazgrim, buried near the front of Orgrimmar.[37] The second to be raised was King Thoras Trollbane after an agreement with Prince Galen Trollbane.[38][39] However, the undead prince ultimately refused to let his father come back to life and was executed for his treason,[40] before the Deathlord eventually resurrected the king of Stromgarde.[41] The third was the former High Inquisitor of the Scarlet Crusade, Sally Whitemane.[42] In that purpose, the Ebon Blade assaulted the Scarlet Monastery, now led by High Commander Goodchilde,[43] where Thassarian declared they would not leave until every last crusader had been killed.[44]

Over the years since Koltira Deathweaver was imprisoned, the Ebon Blade made several attempts to negotiate with Sylvanas Windrunner for his release, but she refused them all. After Thassarian made a personal request to the Deathlord, Koltira was successfully broken out of the Apothecarium in Undercity and became a champion of the Ebon Blade.[45] [46]

The new Four Horsemen of the Ebon Blade.

In order to resurrect Tirion Fordring as the final horseman, the Ebon Blade mounted an assault on Light's Hope Chapel and fought against Lady Liadrin and the reformed Order of the Silver Hand. However, the Light on the sacred ground proved too strong, and they were defeated, killing Highlord Mograine when he teleported his death knights to Acherus. The Lich King commended Darion's sacrifice and ordered the Deathlord to raise him as the final horseman. Following in his father's footsteps, Darion became the new leader of the Four Horsemen.[47]

At one point, the Ebon Blade agents entered the Scarlet Monastery in order to retrieve the saddle of Thomas Thomson's steed, killing Faralis the Fanatic in the process.[48]

During the Battle for the Exodar, Thassarian and Nazgrim helped the Deathlord in repelling High General Rakeesh and the Legion forces out of the draenei capital.[49]

The Ebon Blade, represented by Darion Mograine,[50] joined the other orders to discuss the Pillars of Creation and form the Armies of Legionfall. Their death knights later helped to repel the legion's assault on Dalaran, and could be found fighting demons from Deliverance Point during the Assault on Broken Shore.

During the Argus Campaign, the death knights were present on Argus under the Deathlord's orders, and protected the Vindicaar from the Legion at Darkfall Ridge. When Sargeras impaled Azeroth with his sword, gravely injuring its world-soul, a death knight champion among other heroes drained the sword of its corruption with one of their artifacts, using it as a vessel for its vast power.[51]

Battle for Azeroth

Under the Bolvar Fordragon's command, the Four Horsemen acquired fallen champions of both the Horde and Alliance through the battlefields and graveyards across Azeroth.[3] Consequently, the Knights of the Ebon Blade welcomed a new generation of death knights into their fold, being raised by the Lich King in preparation for dark times ahead.[52] They were later sent by Highlord Darion Mograine to rejoin their faction back in Orgrimmar and Stormwind.[53]

Following the Fourth War, Mathias Shaw reported that the Scarlet Crusade had been effectively totally wiped out by the Ebon Blade.[54]

Believing that Bolvar Fordragon had fallen to the corruption of the Lich King, Darion Mograine attempted to kill him, only to be forcibly sent back to Acherus while being taunted to return with the Four Horsemen. Though wary of it being a trap, the horsemen agreed to kill the Lich King and discussed who would then wear the Helm of Domination. However, en route to Icecrown Citadel, the Four Horsemen discovered the Lich King locked in combat with Sylvanas Windrunner, and learned that this was all part of Bolvar's gambit to have the horsemen arrive and kill the winner of the conflict. The Horsemen were stunned when Sylvanas won and destroyed the helm instead of claiming ownership of it. With the Scourge no longer under control, Darion ordered Nazgrim and Sally Whitemane to rescue Bolvar, while he and Thoras Trollbane fought the unleashed undead to keep Acherus under their control.[3]

Shadowlands

Shadowlands-Icon-Inline.png This section concerns content related to Shadowlands.

Highlord Bolvar Fordragon and his death knights in the Maw.

As the rift between the Shadowlands and Azeroth was opened, Bolvar Fordragon took the direct leadership of the Ebon Blade as their new Highlord. Following the return of the Scourge, the Ebon Blade stepped forward to help the Alliance and Horde combat the threat.[55] If the adventurer was a death knight, the Argent Sentries told them that they have not forgotten what the Ebon Blade attempted at Light's Hope Chapel, and that while they may not be enemies, they were not allies either.

While Sally Whitemane and Nazgrim became the Ebon Blade's emissaries to the factions, the heroes were called to Icecrown Citadel to unite against Sylvanas Windrunner and the Jailer within the Shadowlands.[56] Aboard Acherus, they went atop the Citadel where Bolvar and the death knights were waiting alongside the leaders of the Alliance and the Horde. After explaining how dire the situation was, the Highlord directed the adventurers to use the shattered fragments of the Helm of Domination to conjure a portal to enter the Maw with the troops of the Ebon Blade.[57]

However, the chaotic energies of this place have scattered the death knights, and their forces were already depleted after only mere moments there.[58] They had to face the Mawsworn forces,[59][60] losing a large number of their troops during their advance,[61] enough for Jaina Proudmoore to be shocked at the few death knights remaining.[62]

Having no choice but to continue to advance before enemy reinforcements arrive, Darion led the Ebon Blade's charge alongside an adventurer to save the captured leaders of the Horde and Alliance. When they finally arrived at the exit, the Jailer's forces attacked them, and only the adventurer made it out, with the others, including Darion, captured.[63]

Later, Bolvar managed to travel to Oribos, alongside other Ebon Blade death knights, where they united with the denizens of the city to defend the Shadowlands.[64] In time Darion was rescued,[65] and joined his fellow death knights within Oribos. In order for new allies from Azeroth to come in the Shadowlands, acolytes of the Ebon Blade were ordered to establish portals to access Oribos from the Wizard's Sanctum in Stormwind City and the Pathfinder's Den in Orgrimmar.[66]

As the covenants rallied together to defend Ardenweald from Sylvanas and the Mawsworn, the Knights of the Ebon Blade remained behind in Oribos to defend the city.[67][68]

Following the departure of Zovaal to an unknown destination at the Sanctum of Domination, Bolvar ordered the death knights to take the unconscious Sylvanas Windrunner prisoner within Oribos in the hopes that they could interrogate her about the Jailer's plan.[69] Sylvanas was eventually released from their custody, after Uther was able to aid her, and she decided to join the fight against the Jailer.[70]

Several members of the Ebon Blade accompanied Bolvar and the other heroes into Zereth Mortis and the Sepulcher of the First Ones. Following the death of Zovaal, Darion declared that the Ebon Blade no longer needed to maintain a presence within Oribos and would soon make their exodus from the city and return to Azeroth. However, the death knights' vigil was far from over, as without the Helm of Domination to control them, the Scourge threatened to spread across the world like the plague that created them. Thus, the Ebon Blade's mission was to return to Northrend and keep the Scourge in check, while safeguarding Icecrown Citadel.[71]

After the san'layn Vorath was killed and his Scourge attack on Quel'Thalas thwarted, Lor'themar Theron promised to inform the Ebon Blade of these events. He also feared that things were far worse in Northrend.[72]

Following the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeard reported that Ebon Watch in Zul'Drak remained out of an abundance of caution for years, and that caution turned out to be rather prescient, as they faced the unleashed Scourge in the region.[6] The death knights led by Duke Lankral were still controled the Shadow Vault in Icecrown, but as the Scourge was no longer under Bolvar Fordragon's control, it was only a matter of time before a counterattack, since it was such a plum location.[73]
