Defenders of the Light are Argent human paladins and soldiers involved in the following quest 
[8-30] The Light of Dawn. There were 250 of them defending Light's Hope Chapel and suffered heavy losses but were victorious.
After the battle ceases Highlord Tirion Fordring recognizes the fallen soldiers for fighting to save the lives of their own as well as everyone else that participated in the battle.
Abilities
Holy Light — Calls upon Holy magic to heal an ally.
Holy Strike — Inflicts 130 holy damage to all Scourge in front of the caster.
Uppercut — Inflicts normal damage to an enemy, knocking it back.
Equipment
It seems as though the Defenders of the Light are wearing level 80 gear which is applied due to the opening of Wrath of the Lich King.
