This is a list of World of Warcraft endgame and patch storylines. This only covers the original World of Warcraft (and, by extension World of Warcraft: Classic).

Initial release

Reputation grind

Reputation grind was a major part of World of Warcraft endgame.

Capital cities

The player can grind reputation with capital cities of their faction, with the reward of being able to purchase their Mounts upon reaching Exalted. Apart from one-time quests, there is a certain quest line, ending with a repeatable quest, that serves primarily to gain reputation.

  1. A Donation of Wool
  2. A Donation of Silk
  3. A Donation of Mageweave
  4. A Donation of Runecloth
  5. Additional Runecloth - repeatable
Timbermaw Hold

While not very important in the long run, having these furbolgs at least not Hostile would allow one to get through their tunnel between Felwood, Winterspring, and Moonglade unmolested.

The player can get reputation by killing corrupted furbolg in Felwood and Winterspring, and doing quests for them. Here are the initial quests.

  1. N [48] Timbermaw Ally - Mandatory for any further quests
  2. N [55] Speak to Nafien (optional)
  3. N [15-30] Deadwood of the North
  4. N [55] Speak to Salfa (optional)
  5. N [58] Winterfall Activity

After reaching Neutral the player can get more quests:

A reward for reaching Exalted is these quests:

  1. N [15-30G] The Root of All Evil
  2. B [60] The Brokering of Peace
Argent Dawn

One of the initial endgame reputations, primarily concerned with fighting against undead. Apart from one-time quests, the player can gain reputation with them in the following ways:

  1. Killing undead in the Western and Eastern Plaguelands. Regular undead gives reputation until 3000/6000 Friendly, elite until 11999/12000 Honored
  2. Killing undead bosses in Scholomance and Stratholme.
  3. Doing repeatable quests:

Having at least Honored with Argent Dawn is important, as it is mandatory to eventually enter Naxxramas.

Hydraxian Waterlords

A very important reputation for early raiding, as having Revered with them is necessary to be able to fight the last two bosses of Molten Core. The player can gain reputation by killing elementals in Silithus, Burning Steppes (until Honored), Blackrock Depths, Upper Blackrock Spire and, of course, Molten Core itself (until Revered). Once at Revered, the only way to get further reputation is by killing bosses in Molten Core.

Dungeon attunements

Scholomance loading screen

The first notable storylines are dungeon keys and attunements. There are not that many dungeons that require attunements, but there are some.

Blackrock Depths

The player needs to obtain the  [Shadowforge Key] in order to progress past a certain point of Blackrock Depths. It is obtained through a pair of quests in the Blackrock Mountain.

  1. N [52D] Dark Iron Legacy
  2. N [52D] Dark Iron Legacy
Scholomance

The gate to scholomance is initially locked, and requires a  [Skeleton Key] to open. To obtain it, the player needs to do a certain quest chain in the Western Plaguelands.

  1. B [50] A Call to Arms: The Plaguelands! (optional)
  2. A [52] Clear the Way / H [53] Scarlet Diversions
  3. B [56] All Along the Watchtowers

  6. B [57] Mold Rhymes With...
  7. B [57] Fire Plume Forged
  8. B [60G] Araj's Scarab
  9. B [60] The Key to Scholomance
Stratholme

To progress past a certain point in the "living" part of Stratholme, the player needs to retrieve  [The Scarlet Key] from Scarlet Monastery Library.

In addition, once the player gets the  [Key to the City] from Magistrate Barthilas, they can enter the dungeon through the side entrance.

Raid questlines

Molten Core loading screen

One does not simply walk into raid instance of World of Warcraft. First, they must prove themself worthy.

Upper Blackrock Spire

To gain access to Upper Blackrock Spire, the player needs to complete a pair of quests in Lower Blackrock Spire.

  1. N [60D] Seal of Ascension
  2. N [60D] Seal of Ascension
Molten Core

While a player can walk into Molten Core with no preparation, they cannot access the last two bosses of the instance without the help of Hydraxian Waterlords. But it takes work before the water elementals will provide said help.

  1. N [55] Poisoned Water / N [57] Stormers and Rumblers

Patch 1.6.0 - Assault on Blackwing Lair

Blackwing Lair loading screen

Blackwing Lair

The big addition of this patch is the addition of another raid instance, Blackwing Lair. Before the player can access it, they need to attune to it. Thankfully, the attunement is short and only needs a single Upper Blackrock Spire run.

Patch 1.9.0 - The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj

Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj loading screen

Ahn'Qiraj:The Forgotten Kindom

The biggest addition of this patch was the addition of a pair of raid instances in southern Silithus - the Ruins and Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. Hovewer, unlocking them is a server-wide task that consisted of two parts.

Ahn'Qiraj War Effort

The first part of the unlocking process - the ability to turn in resources in return for a number of  [Alliance Commendation Signet] /  [Horde Commendation Signet] and  [Ahn'Qiraj War Effort Supplies]. The war effort needed tens or even hundreds of thousand of supplies to succeed, so every character could contribute regardless of their level - even low-level characters could bring a batch of  [Copper Bar], for example, and receive rewards. In addition, the Alliance and the Horde need to cooperate in this one - every objective on both sides must be completed.

Cooking:

First Aid:

Herbalism:

Mining:

Skinning:

The Scepter of the Shifting Sands
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj loading screen

The second part of unlocking the raids involved a long and arduous questline, involving multiple forays into previous raids, several world boss fights and a lot of grinding.

  2. N [60R] Only One May Rise - 500 reputation

  11. N [60] Treasure of the Timeless One - 500 reputation (after 10 hours)

Patch 1.10.0 - Storms of Azeroth

One of the "under-the-hood" patches - it did not add much in terms of major content, instead focusing on quality of life changes.

The Fate of Veiled Blade

The major storyline added in this patch is a long quest chain focusing on the mercenary guild Veiled Blade and their ill-fated expedition into Upper Blackrock Spire. The main reason to do this quest chain is to upgrade the player's Dungeon Set 1 equipment into Dungeon Set 2.

Naxxramas

The main addition of this patch is Naxxramas - the eponymous necropolis, which serves as a final raid instance of original World of Warcraft, and the entrance to which is located in the Eastern Plaguelands. It was prefixed by the world event Scourge Invasion.

Attuning to the raid instance requires reputation with Argent Dawn - at least Honored is necessary to attune at all, while having higher levels reduces attunement costs.

The quests associated with Naxxramas are:

Long-Lost Power

Another addition, tied with Naxxramas, is Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian - a legendary staff for caster classes, Atiesh serves as a culmination of power for those classes.

  1. Obtain 40  [Splinter of Atiesh] by defeating bosses in Naxxramas, then assemble them into  [Frame of Atiesh].
  2. N [60R] Frame of Atiesh - go to Caverns of Time and speak with Anachronos. One needs to be at least Neutral with Brood of Nozdormu for Anachronos to pay them any attention.
  3. N [60R] Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff - Kill C'Thun for  [Base of Atiesh] and Kel'Thuzad for  [Staff Head of Atiesh].
  4. N [60D] Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian - Head to Stratholme, where you have to cleanse the staff by fighting the demon within. Sword-using classes can disarm the demon to briefly wield one of its swords,  [Andonisus, Reaper of Souls]. Staff get!
