Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker is the legendary sword once wielded by Prince Thunderaan, Prince of Air. Equipping the sword awards the Feat of Strength,  [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]. It is the only legendary weapon that can be obtained by all classes, but Druids, Priests, and Shamans cannot equip it.

History

This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

Ragnaros the Firelord, and his lieutenants Garr and Baron Geddon, defeated Thunderaan, Prince of Air, after the First Age of Creation, during the Elemental Sundering. Ragnaros was unable to fully consume Thunderaan’s essence, so he forced what little remained into a talisman of elemental binding and shattered it. He gave the two halves to his lieutenants. Ages passed, and somehow the talisman halves found their way into the hands of Highlord Demitrian, a follower of Thunderaan. He recombined the talisman but was unable to release his master. Instead, he did the best he could: He crafted a blade to serve as a vessel for his master's essence.

When the Earthen Ring decides to resurrect Thunderaan to replace the fallen Al'Akir, a shaman adventurer takes Thunderfury from the corpse of its last wielder — a dwarf warrior called Wray who died while facing Ragemaw — in Azsuna and brings it to the Vortex Pinnacle. With the  [Heart of Skywall] and the power of Thunderfury, Thunderaan is revived and wields Thunderfury as the new Windlord.

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker is the reward from the quest  [30] Rise, Thunderfury!. It is the culmination of a challenging and very expensive quest chain.

The quest chain begins after looting the left or the right half of the  [Bindings of the Windseeker], which drop off Baron Geddon and Garr respectively, in Molten Core. Upon looting either of these, travel to Silithus and talk with Highlord Demitrian. He will hand over the  [Vessel of Rebirth] which starts the quest chain.

The next quest requires the following items:

• Both left and right halves of the  [Bindings of the Windseeker]
•  [Essence of the Firelord] - a 100% drop, assuming one has the quest, from Ragnaros, final boss of Molten Core.
• 10x  [Enchanted Elementium Bar] - smelted from 10  [Elementium Ingot] (from Blackwing Lair), 10  [Fiery Core], 100  [Arcanite Bar], and 30  [Elemental Flux].
  • The Arcanite Bars will require 100  [Thorium Bar] (smelted from 100  [Thorium Ore]) and 100  [Arcane Crystal].

Bring a raid when returning with the required items to Demitrian because he will summon Thunderaan, who promptly attacks. Upon defeating Thunderaan, loot the  [Dormant Wind Kissed Blade] from its corpse. Deliver this to (the now rather cowed) Highlord, and he will make Thunderfury.

In the RPG

This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

Thunderfury is a vicious sword, crafted from elementium and containing a crackling electrical core that might be all that remains of Prince Thunderaan. The hilt is unusually long, wrapped in black dragon hide, and studded with small spikes of black dragon bone.

Notes and trivia

• The proc effect has been observed to be approximately 20-25%. The slowing effect from the proc affects both mobs and players. The secondary nature resistance reduction debuff that is applied to the targets does not break crowd control effects, and it is unconfirmed to whether it actually generates any threat (although it will register on a mob's threat table such as critters or the bugs in Twin Emperor's room in AQ40). The Thunderfury proc may also crit for approximately 450 Nature damage.
• While in combat with Thunderaan, the loot setting should not matter. The quest item will only be available to loot for people with the quest. (If multiple people have the quest there will be a quest item for each one of them).
• Among the many silly discussions in Barrens chat, sometimes people try to link the item Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker into every conversation. This is presumably because it is both one of the few legendary items at the time and possibly one of the longest item names in the game.
  • Players usually start the conversation by saying "Did someone say  [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?".
