Tyr is a titan-forged keeper and the mightiest of the watchers.[3] He once resided at the Temple of Order, in Ulduar.[4] Tyr died fighting against Keeper Loken's C'Thraxxi minions after Archaedas and Tyr learned his betrayal. He was buried in a tomb known as Tyr's Fall, beneath a lake in what is now called Tirisfal Glades, named in honor of his ultimate sacrifice. He was recently revived through the efforts of the Dragon Aspects.

Tyr is regarded as a dear friend to the Aspects, whom he worked together with to defeat Galakrond long ago. He famously replaced one of his hands with one forged of silver after it was devoured by Galakrond; this silver hand came to symbolize one of Tyr's main ideals, that lasting order and justice can only be achieved through personal sacrifice.[5][6] His valiant sacrifice to protect the vrykul from Loken would lead to him being revered by them, and his legend would be passed on to their human descendants, becoming the inspiration for the Knights of the Silver Hand.

Biography

Ordering of Azeroth

The Temple of Order, Tyr's domain at the Terrace of the Makers in the Storm Peaks.
Tyr's weapon, the Silver Hand.

Tyr was one of the Keepers created by the Pantheon to lead the titan-forged armies during the war between the titans and the Old Gods. Tyr was imbued with strength and courage by Aggramar. As the mightiest of the Keepers, the great warrior Tyr was armed with an immense hammer, inspiring courage in everyone who fought at his side.[7]

Together with Odyn, he battled and defeated Ragnaros the Firelord.[8] During their battle, Ragnaros retreated to the heart of his lair where he was strongest and filled it with thick, dark smoke. Tyr's hammer shined as a silver beacon in the darkness, and it moved to and fro, back and forth. The strange movements confused Ragnaros, who thought Tyr and Odyn were too cowardly to approach him. When Ragnaros let his guard down, Tyr burst through the smoke and scored a staggering blow against him. With Odyn at his side, they brought the Firelord down.[7]

Dawn of the Aspects (past)

WoW-novel-logo-16x62.png This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

Countless years after the Ordering of Azeroth,[7] Tyr observed the proto-dragons from the shadows, particularly the intelligent ones such as Malygos. When the massive Galakrond began devouring proto-dragons and the victims became undead, Tyr made his presence known to Malygos and asked for the clever blue's help, as well as the help of Malygos's companions. Tyr blamed himself for Galakrond's mutations, saying it was never intended. Tyr explained that his fellow keepers would not face the danger of Galakrond as they are not tied to Azeroth like its native species are, and so he all but begged Malygos for aid.

Later, Tyr used an undead proto-dragon to catch the attention of Ysera and Alexstrasza. Some time after, Malygos found his way to the three of them. As Malygos and Tyr conversed, Ysera in an effort to reason with the undead proto-dragon freed it and only survived due to Malygos quickly destroying the fiend. However, Malygos soon fell into the hunger for flesh, having been bitten earlier, but was brought back to his senses by Ysera. Remarking that Ysera was special and Malygos had the strength to resist the hunter for so long, Tyr used his powers to heal Malygos of his ailment. He then proposed hunting Galakrond and decided to stand by the proto-dragons this time, revealing a war hammer from beneath his cloak. Lastly, he pulled out an octagonal artifact called the Spark of Tyr,[9] moving it to the three proto-dragons as it glowed, with the promise that he was "trying to ensure some future."

A Spark of Tyr on his belt.

Galakrond returned outside the cavern, chasing Neltharion and Nozdormu. Malygos and Tyr moved to the entrance to witness their battle, and Tyr was overjoyed at the proto-dragons' coordination. Alexstrasza, Malygos, and a now full-sized Tyr joined in the battle. Temporarily stunning Galakrond with his hammer, Tyr ordered the proto-dragons to flee as he stayed to battle the monster.

An unknown time later, Tyr met with the five proto-dragons, informing them that Galakrond was sleeping in a mountain range to the north and that it was the perfect time to attack. He told them to eat before doing so, and just before they left Tyr held the Spark of Tyr before Nozdormu and Neltharion as he had to the others before. After doing so, Tyr vanished in the blink of an eye.

Tyr and the proto-dragons met up near Galakrond's slumbering place. Save for Ysera, they all began the battle against Galakrond, who had grown larger and even more mutated than before. Throughout the battle, the Spark of Tyr on Tyr's belt glowed ever brighter. When Galakrond suddenly expanded in size without warning, Tyr's hammer could no longer harm him. With a flap of wings, Galakrond called up a massive wind that scattered the fighters. Ysera suddenly appeared and Galakrond attempted to devour her, but Tyr silenced his laughter with a mighty blow from his hammer. Tyr pulled Galakrond to the ground and began to mercilessly beat him even as Galakrond began mutating further - as he began to resemble a true dragon.

In the battle, Tyr's hammer and the Spark of Tyr were knocked free from his person. Tyr reached to grab the Spark, just as Galakrond's massive maw came within range and the monster clamped down on Tyr's hand. Malygos moved to save Tyr, examining the bloody stump as Galakrond roared in triumph and grew ever larger.

An unconscious Tyr was brought to a frozen lake by the proto-dragons, only to vanish from the shore. While the proto-dragons believed some beast had taken him for food, they later met two other Keepers who revealed that they were the ones to bring Tyr home. With Tyr out of commission, the proto-dragons had to defeat Galakrond on their own. However, it was Tyr who had brought them together and shown them the power they wielded united, and in doing so he had convinced the other Keepers that they were worthy protectors of Azeroth.[10]

Tyr's friend Jotun would later help Tyr replace his severed hand with a closed fist made of silver, and also added Tyr's new silver hand symbol onto his hammer. Jotun agreed, but asked why Tyr would want to draw attention to his wound by marking it on his hammer. Tyr replied that he did not consider his argent hand a reminder of defeat. For him, it was a symbol of the sacrifice he had made to defend Azeroth, and he wanted the world to see it that way as well. He renamed his hammer the Silver Hand.[9][7]

After the Dragon Aspects were uplifted, Tyr created the refti, a titan-forged race that would work in harmony with the dragons.[11] He also crafted the facility Uldorus for the dragons, which they started calling "Tyrhold", much to his embarrassment.[12]

War of the Scaleborn

WoW-novel-logo-16x62.png This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

Seeking to ensure that the dragonflights thrive, Tyr approached the Aspects about taking primal dragon eggs from the wilds and infusing them with Order magic. He defended this approach by stating that the dragonflights must be prepared to defend Azeroth when the time came. Alexstrasza had misgivings about this but feared that the keepers might revoke the Aspects' blessings and turn them back into proto-dragons if they didn't do as Tyr said (Tyr himself never says this might happen, but Alexstrasza fears it anyway), so agreed to having titan-forged workers take the eggs for ordering.[13] As a compromise, Alexstrasza ordered the titan-forged workers to only take eggs that were alone in the wild, as otherwise they'd be food for predators. However, when Fyrakk created the Primalists, the order was given to take eggs from nests as well, to strengthen the dragonflights' numbers and weaken the Primalists'.[14]

Loken's rebellion

When one of his fellow keepers, Loken, fell to corruption, only Tyr and Archaedas did not fall victim to Loken's schemes. Tyr had long suspected something was wrong with Loken, so he was not caught by surprise. However, since Loken had vast armies at his disposal, Tyr, Archaedas, and their friend Ironaya hid in the outskirts of the Storm Peaks to plan their next move while Loken hunted them.[15] After looking for them and not finding them, Loken assumed they had fled far away from Ulduar.[16][citation needed]

Loken later instigated the Winterskorn War, fought between the Winterskorn vrykul and the earthen. During the war, Tyr and his companions were approached with pleas for help by the beleaguered earthen. Tyr and his friends immediately emerged from their hiding place to lead the earthen and attack the Winterskorn, eventually driving them back for a while. Tyr, alongside his companion Archaedas, forged a shield named Truthguard and gave it to a vrykul champion named Yrgrim the Truthseeker to help expose Loken's treachery. This allowed them to convert many vrykul to their cause. After the Winterskorn came back, now riding on proto-dragons, Tyr called the Dragon Aspects to help them put a final stop to their war. With their help, they defeated the vrykul and put most of the Winterskron in deep hibernation.

After defeating the Winterskorn, Tyr decided it was time to take the fight to Loken. Otherwise, he would continue creating conflicts and destroying everything he could reach. Tyr and his allies decided to steal the Discs of Norgannon to investigate the extent of Loken's betrayal. Before instigating their plan, Tyr had to make some contingencies. He and Ironaya traveled to the Dragon Isles where Tyr gave the Dragon Aspects a scale forged of pure silver.[17] It was a gift that they could use to outwit the traitor Loken's schemes, though the Aspects were not told its purpose just yet.[18] Tyr bid his good friends farewell for the last time, and though they wanted to help even without knowing where he was going, Tyr insisted it was something only he and the keepers could do.[17]

Tyr came to Ulduar's entrance to distract Loken with requests for him to relinquish control of Ulduar. Meanwhile, Archaedas and Ironaya infiltrated Ulduar and stole the Discs. They then escaped back through the Storm Peaks and prepared to flee far away from that area, in order to find a new refuge where they could analyze the data and plan their attack. Tyr was able to gather many titan-forged that would accompany them in their journey: vrykul already afflicted by the Curse of Flesh, most of the surviving earthen and many mechagnomes. Jotun, Tyr's friend, stayed behind to try to stop Loken from pursuing them.[9]

Death

Discovering the theft of the Discs, Loken panicked, thinking that if the Pantheon were to look at the information in the Discs, his life would be forfeit. Out of desperation, Loken sent horrific C'Thraxxi monsters after Tyr's group, known as Zakajz the Corruptor and Kith'ix. After many weeks they found Tyr and his companions, far to the south, in a tranquil glade. Tyr ordered Archaedas and Ironaya to flee further south with the rest, while he remained to hold off the C'Thraxxi. They fought for six days and six nights, and eventually, Tyr decided to sacrifice his life to protect his friends. He unleashed all his remaining energy in a blinding explosion, killing Zakazj and dying as well. The severely wounded Kith'ix fled to the west and did not come back.

In honor of her friend, Ironaya named the glade "Tyr's Fall", which in the vrykul tongue translated to Tirisfal. They built a tomb and buried Tyr and his foe where they lay, and placed his silver hand on top as a memorial to his sacrifice.[19] His hammer, the Silver Hand, was stored inside the tomb as well.[7] The vrykul were so moved by Tyr's sacrifice that they decided to settle at the battle site and guard Tyr's grave forever. Archaedas, Ironaya, and the earthen and mechagnomes continued south and ended up settling in Uldaman.[19]

Having anticipated his death, Tyr had crafted a disc containing his memories and entrusted it to Archaedas and Ironaya. When the time was right, the Discs of Tyr were to be given to the Dragon Aspects to tell them what to do.[18]

The vrykul passed down the legend of Tyr, his silver hand, and his tenet of self-sacrifice to their descendants, the humans.[6] Tyr's Guard, an ancient human order, ultimately replaced the vrykul that guarded the tomb and continued to guard it for thousands of years.[7] Tyr's hand at some point disappeared from Tirisfal with no one knowing what became of it,[20] but the imagery of the silver hand continued to haunt and inspire humanity for millennia thereafter.[21] The legend inspired the name of the city of Tyr's Hand and, later, the name and iconography of the Knights of the Silver Hand, an order of paladins who placed self-sacrifice above all else.[20]

Hadwin believes that there may be a connection between Tyr's silver hand and the silver weaponry used by the Order of Embers to fight the Drust on Kul Tiras.[22]

Dawn of the Aspects (present)

Kalecgos found the Spark of Tyr still clutched in his severed hand at Galakrond's Rest. As Kalec was rocked by visions of the war against Galakrond, he often caught brief glimpses of Tyr observing him only for Tyr to vanish before Kalec could get a clear look. Jaina Proudmoore theorized that the ghost of the taunka Buniq was actually Tyr in disguise. After reminding the Aspects of their duties via Tyr's recording device, Kalec once again thought he saw Tyr standing at Galakrond's Rest.

Given that Tyr had died before this event while combating Loken, it seems that Jaina was wrong about Buniq and that Kalec seeing him was either his ghost or visions brought on by the Spark of Tyr.

Legion

Around the time of the Battle for the Broken Shore, a remnant group of the Twilight's Hammer, led by the Twilight Bishop, found and opened Tyr's Tomb, hoping to awaken Zakajz the Corruptor, and possibly corrupt the body of the dead watcher, to bring about the end of Azeroth.

Sometime after the Tomb was broken open, a priest and warrior, respectively had delved into the Tomb and retrieved the artifacts they sought, and having killed the Twilight's Hammer members they could find, they left the Tomb behind.

Later on, a paladin, seeking The Silver Hand itself, traveled to Galakrond's Rest to find a paladin named Galford who had a Spark of Tyr and had gone to Northrend to learn more about Tyr. Galford was killed by Tyr's old friend Jotun, who had been cursed by Loken to attack any ally of Tyr's, but not before he had succeeded in using the Spark to see memories of Jotun aiding Tyr. After being defeated, Jotun allowed the Spark of Tyr to be taken. The paladin then delved into the Tomb alongside its guardians, and after killing the remaining dark forces found within, retrieved the Silver Hand. Due to a failsafe that was connected to the Silver Hand, the tomb then collapsed, preventing further incursions, so as to protect Tyr's secrets forever.

Dragonflight

Tyr's body reforged in Tyrhold.

A previously-undiscovered wing of Uldaman, dubbed the "Legacy of Tyr", is discovered. Within its halls is the Discs of Tyr, an artifact containing Tyr's memories that he entrusted to Ironaya and Archaedas along with the Discs of Norgannon, and it holds an important message for the Dragon Aspects. Before the disc can be retrieved, however, the infinite dragon Chrono-Lord Deios sends it to another time.

The Silver Scale, a dragon scale forged of pure silver that Tyr gave to the dragons long ago as a symbol of unity and friendship, begins to pulse with power. Alexstrasza believes that the dragons returning to the isles has awakened the scale, and asks an adventurer to investigate at Tyrhold along with Watcher Koranos.[23] By placing the scale at various consoles in Tyrhold, ancient broken messages from Tyr are uncovered concerning Loken's corruption and Tyr, Archaedas, and Ironaya fleeing from Ulduar.[24] After uncovering all of the messages the Aspects arrive at Tyrhold and Nozdormu shows a vision of when Tyr gave the scale to the dragons, shortly before he left for Uldaman.[17]

When Alexstrasza says that she hopes Tyr would be proud of the dragons' accomplishments and how dragonkind has thrived, voice recognition activates a titan orb with a recorded message from Tyr. Tyr tells the Aspects that if they are receiving this message then a time of great need has arrived, but he is no longer among the living. He tells them to take the Silver Scale to his forge.[17] Placing the scale into the console at the forge activates it,[25] and with ancient Titansteel ingots forged by Aggramar himself that have been safekept by Watcher Irideus in the Halls of Infusion,[26][27] a new body for Tyr is reconstructed using schematics stored within the Silver Scale. But it is only an empty vessel, and in the absence of further instructions, the Aspects must figure out what to do next to restore his mind. Alexstrasza proposes either tracking down the Discs of Tyr that the infinite dragons stole, or finding some other method.[28]

In time, Nozdormu felt the energy that transcends time in the Silver Scale and believed that this would enable them to collect memories that Tyr did not implement on the scale. Thus, adventurers and Watcher Koranos went to the Tomb of Tyr and were able to acquire the memories of Tyr's final moments.[29] After uploading the memories to the copy of Tyr, the body moved briefly, before shutting down once more.[30]

Tyr and the Tyr's Guard.

Following the events of Dawn of the Infinite, Chronormu, the reformed Tyr's Guard and Eternus worked together to recover the lost Discs of Tyr. After they placed three beacons at key moments of the timeline, Chromie and Eternus triangulated the disc in possession of Elisande at the Nighthold.[31] After Fyrakk's defeat, Tyr's Guard and the adventurer traveled into the Nighthold in another timeline and convinced Elisande to hand over Tyr's disc after she had gleaned knowledge from it. With the disc and Silver Scale together, Tyr was at long last revived and greeted Alexstrasza and Nozdormu who were present for his awakening.[2] Both informed Tyr of how long it had been since his death, as well as that Malygos, Ysera, and Neltharion had all since passed on and that new Aspects had taken their place. Tyr asked if they reforged him to seek his aid, which Alexstrasza said they did at first but now was a time of peace and friendship. Travard introduced Tyr to the Tyr's Guard and asked him to speak to them at their new headquarters, Tyr's Rest.[32]

After Tyr settled into Tyr's Rest with the Guard, Travard asked what was his will. Confused, he announced that he had much to learn about the changed world, such as what had happened to his vrykul soldiers, to which Travard explained that humans like him were their descendants. Tyr then decided that his will was for the Tyr's Guard to help him learn about the modern world.[1] Many paladins expressed hope that Tyr would become a common uniting ground for the disparate paladin orders across Azeroth.[33] When Talthis asked Tyr where he should like to go first to fix chaos and right wrongs, such as Northrend, Quel'Thalas, or the Broken Isles, Tyr responded that he wanted to learn more about the modern world first before intruding on it.[34]

A short time later, after having discussed the ancient past and the modern world with the paladins, Tyr expressed that while he was glad his legacy continued among the Tyr's Guard and Knights of the Silver Hand, he felt that the world was alien to him now after so long away. Travard disagreed, feeling that Tyr and the titans were an inspiration to those who upheld order and that Tyr's revival points to a greater purpose. Tyr hoped he was right.[35]

After Amirdrassil bloomed on the Dragon Isles, Tyr and Koranos visited the new world tree. As he had to the Tyr's Guard before, Tyr expressed his concerns to Koranos about how much the world and people he knew had changed. Koranos also voiced his concerns about his own purpose being fulfilled now, but suggested that it may be enough to observe and safeguard this new world they found themselves in. Tyr said he had much to ponder.

Appearance

Tyr has silver skin and golden hair. A thick, long mustache extends down to his chest. His eyes are yellow and lack pupils, and Kalecgos compares them to those of a night elf. He often wears a cloak and hood, and an octagonal object called the Spark of Tyr[9] is strapped to his silver belt - the same Spark which grants Kalecgos visions of prehistoric Azeroth during Dawn of the Aspects. The Spark of Tyr's purpose was a sort of recording device, meant to remind the Aspects of their greatest moments should they ever feel as though they did not deserve their powers. Underneath his cloak, Tyr wore a crimson tunic and no armor save for shin guards. A band with diamond patterns wrapped just above his right elbow and a crimson cape attached to his tunic with a high, pointed collar.[36] After one of his hands was eaten by Galakrond, Tyr replaced it with a closed fist made of silver. His hammer was named the Silver Hand.[7]

Tyr has the ability to make his body appear much smaller than it actually is, about the size of a night elf or tall human. It is unclear if Tyr actually shrinks or the shrinking is only an illusion.

In Stratholme's Cathedral of Light, there was a stainglass depicting Tyr, as humans imagine him.[37] The Keeper was imagined as a proud, regal warrior of broad features and noble bearing. Surrounded by a halo of golden light, Tyr held a mighty warhammer in one hand and a large, leather-bound tome in the other. The inscription on the tome read: "Esarus thar no’Darador" ("By Blood and Honor We Serve").[38]

Notes and trivia

  • Tyr loved mysteries.[17]
  • Keeper Odyn and Tyr were apparently close, since Odyn called Tyr his brother.[43]
  • Tyr was first mentioned in the Wrath of the Lich King quest A [25-30] Fate of the Titans, which simply states that he has gone absent from the Temple of Order without elaborating on who he was or what happened to him. While all of the other watchers mentioned in the questline later went on to appear as bosses in the Ulduar raid, Tyr remained noticeably missing. In a series of forum posts, Alex Afrasiabi suggested that he might have mutated into General Vezax under the influence of Yogg-Saron,[44] but this was later debunked in the first round of Ask Creative Development, in which Blizzard stated that Tyr was not in Ulduar when Yogg-Saron was defeated.[6] As almost nothing else was known about him, the missing watcher remained a mystery for years. Tyr's story was later significantly expanded upon in Dawn of the Aspects—in which he serves as one of the main characters—but his ultimate fate wasn't revealed until the release of Chronicle Volume 1 and Legion, almost 8 years after the character's original introduction.
  • An area in Utgarde Keep is named Tyr's Terrace.
  • The Spirit of Tyr was initially planned to appear in Legion to empower the Ashbringer artifact in N [100 - 110] Holy Retribution.
  • Tyr appears as a legendary paladin minion in the TITANS expansion. His flavor text reads: "Brought me back to life, S Tyr card."
  • Tyr is named after the Norse god Týr, and their history and experiences are very similar. Týr was the Norse god of law and heroic glory and was depicted as being onehanded after having sacrificed his arm to the monstrous wolf Fenrir, similar to how Tyr had his hand bitten off by Galakrond.
