The Tears of Elune are one of the Pillars of Creation and embody the dream of what Azeroth could be.[1] A stained glass window in the Tomb of Sargeras shows that when the Highborne were in possession of the Pillars of Creation ten thousand years ago, the Tears were kept on top of a staff.

The Sisters' Tear is a similar artifact created through the collaboration of Elune and her sister, the Winter Queen.

History

Ancient times

During Azeroth's ordering, the Pantheon bestowed the Pillars of Creation to the titanic keepers to aid them with their colossal task. Ages after the keepers had completed their work, the Pillars would become lost and scattered across the lands of Azeroth.[2]

War of the Ancients

Over time, the Highborne collected all the Pillars of Creation while hunting artifacts throughout Ancient Kalimdor, and stored them in the Vault of Antiquities in Suramar. During the War of the Ancients, Grand Magistrix Elisande and her allies in Suramar, opposing Queen Azshara, used the Pillars to stop the Burning Legion from creating another portal in the Temple of Elune.[3] After their success, the Tears of Elune were moved for an unknown reason to the Temple of Elune in Val'sharah.

Ten millennia later during the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Tears kept safe in the Temple of Elune in Val'sharah were stolen by Xavius who used the now Nightmare-tainted relic to corrupt the Aspect Ysera.[4] After defending the Temple of Elune from Ysera, the Tears were purified through what was apparently Elune's direct intervention.[5] They were taken by an order leader to Dalaran along with the other Pillars of Creation.[6]

The Tears of Elune were brought to the Tomb of Sargeras, alongside the other Pillars, in order to close the Burning Legion portal and seal the tomb.

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • The Tears of Elune were able to unlock Xe'ra's core,  [Light's Heart], while it was stated by Velen that only a descendant of Xe'ra such as O'ros could do so. Moreover, the Pillars of Creation were created by the titan Pantheon, leaving Elune's identity, nature, and relationship with Xe'ra a mystery.
    • Khadgar found in an old book from Medivh's library that Elune may, in fact, have created Xe'ra. That would still contradict the statement by the naaru, that only a descendant of Xe'ra would be able to unlock her core. Although, if Elune is Xe'ra's creator, she would have the knowledge and power to be able to unlock the core.
  • It is possible that this Pillar might represent Eonar based on the fact that the other Pillars were named after a titan of the Pantheon, and the Tears' connection to nature. However, Norgannon doesn't have one either.
  • The Tears of Elune representing "the dream of what Azeroth could be" could refer to the Emerald Dream.
