Biography

Ancient past

Emberthal and her weyrn.

Emberthal was one of the dracthyr created by Neltharion, who would come to select her to serve as the Scalecommander of the Adamant Vigil. Neltharion fashioned the Forbidden Reach as a secret training ground for the dracthyr,[1][2] where at his command Emberthal would train the Adamant Vigil to serve as the eyes and ears of the black dragonflight and the legions of dracthyr.[3] In a battle with Raszageth and the Primal Incarnates, the titan relic that Neltharion used to control the wills of the dracthyr was destroyed. Though Raszageth was sealed away, Neltharion could no longer directly control the dracthyr without the relic and so deemed them a risk.[4]

Emberthal and her people were thus subsequently ordered to the creches beneath the Forbidden Reach by Neltharion, where they were sealed away by Malygos in magical stasis and watched over by his blue dragonflight. They remained there, abandoned and forgotten for nearly 20,000 years, awakened from their long slumber only when the Primalists returned to break Raszageth free, as an ancient, magical surge rippled through the Forbidden Reach, the dracthyr awoke, but from their long stasis their memories became a blur.[5][2]

Forbidden Reach

The Adamant Vigil were ultimately destroyed as they awakened from their slumber, with their Scalecommander being the only survivor.[6] Determined to not lose any more of her people, Emberthal sent Scalecommander Cindrethresh to lead dracthyr adventurers to the Caldera of the Menders in order check on, and if need be rescue on the Healing Wings.[7] After the Healing Wings were reunited with the rest of the dracthyr, she was relieved to see that Scalecommander Viridia lived. Soon afterward, she received word that the Ebon Scales were under attack by the Primalists.[8] She thus sent Scalecommander Azurathel to lead the rescue party, while warning that Scalecommander Sarkareth could be prickly.[9]

After Ebon Scales were rescued, the entire dracthyr army gathered together as one and were soon joined by Ebyssian and Wrathion.[10] The dracthyr and dragons then rallied to the Froststone Vault in order to prevent the Primalist from freeing the Raszageth, an effort they would ultimately fail at.[11][12] The group was forced to flee from Raszageth's fury, rallying to the safety of the ruins of the combined Dark Talons and Obsidian Warders creche. It was there that they were joined by Nozdormu, who declared that the kingdoms of Azeroth must be warned of Raszageth's release. While her fellow dracthyr left to warn the denizens of Azeroth or strike on their own, Emberthal chose to remain on the reach in the hopes of finding more survivors and answers to their past.[13]

Legacies

Emberthal encounters Nozdormu, who helps her with her amnesia by informing her about the history of dragonkind. She is shocked to learn that her own creator, Neltharion, turned against his own kind and became Deathwing, having been corrupted by the whispers of the Old Gods. Even further still when she learned that after the defeat of Raszageth, Neltharion sealed the dracthyr away and essentially forgot about them.

Dragon Isles

As the Dragonscale Expedition prepares to leave for the Dragon Isles, Emberthal travels to Stormwind and Orgrimmar to inform the dracthyr there of what Nozdormu told her.

In the Waking Shores, Emberthal aids Wrathion and the black flight in retaking the Obsidian Citadel from the djaradin. Afterward, she travels to the Obsidian Observatory, a place that had been of personal importance to Neltharion.[14] While there, she and a dracthyr adventurer uncover records of Neltharion's plans to make the dracthyr to fight the Incarnates. When Emberthal sees that Neltharion had only made them as soldiers for war, she decides that is something the dracthyr must make peace with.[15]

Some time afterward, Emberthal heard that the blue dragonflight was in the Azure Span, and went to investigate alongside Telash Greywing given the dracthyr's history with the blue dragons. There they encountered Khadgar, who explained that he and the Kirin Tor were not the servants of the blue flight, but rather their friends. Khadgar was unnerved by the dracthyr saying that the blue dragons had imprisoned them, and promised to investigate.[16][17] Emberthal and Telash then traveled to the Azure Archives to learn about their captivity by Malygos. With the help of Sindragosa's arcane simulacrum, they uncovered Malygos's journals detailing how Neltharion had been beside himself and insisted the dracthyr had needed to be contained. Telash did not take the information well and ran further into the archives, insisting that Sindragosa was lying, while Emberthal stayed behind to speak to her and read more from Malygos's library.[18][19]

Return to the Forbidden Reach

Following the death of Raszageth, her storms around the Forbidden Reach vanished, opening the way for the dracthyr and their allies to return.[20] Scalecommander Emberthal, who viewed the isle as the closet thing to a home the dracthyr had, was determined to claim it and had the support of Ebyssian, who tried to take on an advisory role for the Scalecommander. However, it was not a smooth partnership, with Emberthal making it clear that she was not pleased with Ebyssian's decision to hide from the rest of the world and frequently criticized Ebyssian as the pair worked together, even as he attempted to diffuse matters.[21] With Talon Damos as her second-in-command, and accompanied by adventurers, Emberthal lead a group of dracthyr further into Reach, while Ebyssian remained behind at Morqut Village.[22]

After reaching the Lost Atheneum, Emberthal instructed her people to secure it, as she investigated the ruins for any information. She privately admitted to adventurers that after everything that happened, everything the dracthyr have been through, she questioned if what she sought wasn't there. Her musings were cut off after Damos' called out to her, and she rushed out to check on him only to discover that he and the others had been slain by Scalecommander Sarkareth and the Sundered Flame.[23] Amidst her grief, Ebyssian arrived and revealed that the Sundered Flame had begun attacking members of the Dragonscale Expedition at High Creche. As he offered comfort to Emberthal for her loss, she lashed out at him demanding to know how many black dragons he had lost, causing Ebyssian to remark that while he had never buried his own, he did help bury generations of the Highmountain Tribe. A surprised Emberthal then realized that they had both lost many who were close to them.[24] As the duo fought against the Sundered Flame, Emberthal tasked adventurers with pushing the Sundered Flame back, though she took no pleasure in it feeling that every dead dracthyr was a tragedy that should have been avoided. In time, the group discovered the black dragon Adamanthia trapped in stasis, and discovered that Neltharion was not only responsible but had used her as a means to imprison and draw the essence of the black dragonflight from the dracthyr during their imprisonment. Though desiring to free her from her torment, Ebyssian advised caution and declared that they should learn more before attempting to destroy her oubliette.[25][26]

Scalecommander Emberthal and Ebyssian.

After discovering that Sarkareth was at Dragonskull Island, Emberthal and Ebyssian once more had a clash of views, before Emberthal headed off to the island alone.[27] Upon reaching the isle, Emberthal recalled how the island was a dark place, full of pain and failure, and recalled the last time she had been present was before she was a Scalecommander. She subsequently ventured into the cave determined to find Sarkareth, where she encountered the risen dead of failed Scalecommanders and memoirs of Neltharion, before discovering Sarkareth surrounded by his Sundered Flame. Despite her desire to bring justice to her fallen allies, Emberthal could not bring herself to slaughter the other dracthyr, and so Sarkareth was able to escape. In the face of Sarkareth calling Emberthal a coward, Ebyssian countered it wasn't weakness that stayed her hand, but the strength in her compassion, conviction, and loyalty to her people, which should be an inspiration to them all.[28] He then approached Emberthal and questioned what she would do if she followed Sarkareth, causing her to remark that she would extinguish him as she had been trained to do by Neltharion. In response, he remarked that the enemy was one of her own, as were the dracthyr that followed him, and that like her they were soldiers who had been conditioned to claim victory at any cost. Outraged, Emberthal asked how Ebyssian could presume to know them after he hid amongst the mortals while other dragons fought and died to protect the world. Ebyssian then acknowledged that she was right; he had turned away from the world, and he was just content to be "Ebonhorn" with Highmountain as his home. He admitted that while he should have done more, his shame as Neltharion's offspring prevented that, and that he had come to the Forbidden Reach to face that, only to find her. When Emberthal declared he must be disappointed, he rejected the notion by pointing out that she had defied his voice inside of her, that she chose compassion over violence, and declared that their family doesn't have to live in his shadow. He then vowed that they would help one another, as he promised to aid Emberthal in ensuring that Sarkareth would face justice for all he had done.[29]

In the aftermath, she instructed adventurers to work with Scalecommander Viridia in building Morqut Village as a safe place for the dracthyr, the tuskarr, and their allies in the Reach.[29]

Embers of Neltharion

Emberthal with Ebyssian, Sabellian, and Wrathion

After the Incarnates opened the way into the Zaralek Cavern, Alexstrasza called upon Ebyssian, Sabellian, Wrathion, and the adventurer to enter and deal with Fyrakk.[30] While Sabellian and Wrathion immediately set off to the caverns, Ebyssian detoured and recruited Scalecommander Emberthal to their mission.[31] Unwillingly to wait for Ebyssian and Emberthal to arrive, Sabellian and Wrathion ventured forth into the caverns, where they did battle with the Primalists, lost a skirmish against Fyrakk, and made allies of the Loamm Niffen.[32] Thus when Ebyssian and Emberthal arrived, they found a safe haven in Loamm, with Emberthal expressing her fascination at the fact an entire world existed below them.[33] At the same time the Black dragonflight acknowledged that they were hearing whispers from within the caverns and Sabellian shared that he had discovered that the Sundered Flame were seeking a laboratory known as Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible, to which Emberthal realized securing it was Scalecommander Sarkareth goal.[34]

Emberthal and Ebyssian with the Destroyed Oathbinder.

While Sabellian on dealing with Fyrakk and Wrathion hunting out information about Aberrus, Emberthal found herself reinforced by Ebyssian as she ventured to Nal ks'kol, a titan facility in the southeastern portion of Zaralek.[35] After the pair were able to enter the vault, they discovered Sarkareth and the Sundered Flame had not only entered before them, but that Sarkareth had claimed Oathbinder, the artifact Neltharion used to control the dracthyr. Though Sarkareth attempted to use the artifact to enslave all his kin, he was thwarted by adventurers, and the artifact was destroyed by Emberthal. In the aftermath, an outraged Sarkareth claimed that Neltharion called to them from Aberrus, which confused both Emberthal and brought worry from Ebyssian. Though Sarkareth was able to flee, Emberthal realized that he was going to Aberrus.[36] In the aftermath, Emberthal decided to offer Amythora and Marithos, members of the Sundered Flame abandoned by Sarkareth, the chance to move forward and away from the Sundered Flame. As both realized that they had been used and betrayed by Sarkareth, they accepted her offer.[37]

Upon returning to Loamm and seeing if Sabellian and Wrathion had discovered a means to stop Fyrakk, Emberthal, and Ebyssian instead found themselves being questioned by the pair as to what treasures they had found. Unimpressed with their content, he questioned what was truly important and who was the rightful heir to a legacy of deceit, control, and fear. When Sabellian and Wrathion grew outraged at the destruction of the Oathbinder, Ebyssian called them out on their bickering, declared that Emberthal had done right for her people, and encouraged them to let go of the past, as their flight needed them here and now.[38]

In time Emberthal arrived at the Brimstone Garrison with the intention of stopping Sarkareth, however, she was unaware that a large force of drakonids still loyal to the memory of Neltharion, were present in Zaralek and had bent the knee to Sarkareth. Ebyssian having discovered this, sent adventurers to aid her. Emberthal welcomed their aid and fought against Sarkareth, during the fight she acknowledged that he had a right to follow the dark whispers if he desired to but requested that he not drag their people down with him, that he let them make their own choice. However, Sarkareth was unmoved and declared that Sundered Flame were his to use as he sought fit. After being beaten, Sarkareth retreated.[39] Knowing that the time had come to assault Aberrus Ebyssian was able to rally Sabellian and the Obsidian Brood and Wrathion and the Blacktalons for the assault and united them with Emberthal.[40] Thus the black dragonflight fought against Sarkareth's within the Brimstone Garrison, defeating them, and forcing Sarkareth to retreat within the safety of Aberrus.

As Sabellian and Wrathion rushed off to prevent Sarkareth from gaining control of the lab, Emberthal made the decision to remain behind, as she had grown weary of fighting her own kin and voiced her own surprise that Ebyssian didn't join them. After a moment of silence, Ebyssian admitted that he felt that the two had to face this without him and that he hoped in their pursuit they would come to see that Neltharion's legacy is death and nothing more. Thus Emberthal invited Ebyssian to join her in finding dracthyr who have yet succumbed to that fate.[41]

In the aftermath of Sarkareth's death, Emberthal was given the shards of Sarkareth's signet at the behest of Ebyssian, who believed that she would appreciate the gesture.[42], In the end, Ebyssian proved correct, as Emberthal made the decision to treat Sarkareth's corpse with respect, with the hope that his memory would be a lesson, for others to not follow the illusion of Neltharion's legacy, and vowed that it was time for the dracthyr to make their own path. Ebyssian then questioned where she hoped it would lead, causing the Scalecommander to admit that she hoped to lead far from the shadows of the past that have haunted them, to make them free to build a legacy of their own, and admitted that it was Ebyssian himself who had inspired herself to believe in such a future.

In turn, Sabellian and Wrathion both reflected on Neltharion's legacy as both the Earth-Warder and Deathwing, and each made the decision to step down, leaving Ebyssian to be the future Aspect and leader of the black dragonflight. Upon witnessing, Emberthal remarked that Ebyssian's days of hiding were truly over, while Ebyssian was deeply humbled and vowed that their trust and faith would guide his every step.[43]

Fractures in Time

After Emberthal and Ebyssian decided to unbind the ancient siphons that were extracting the black dragonflight essence from the dracthyr and free Adamanthia from her imprisonment, Emberthal called upon dracthyr adventurers to aid them.[44] However due to her long time in stasis, she lashed out against the trio only for the fighting to cease when she came to her senses. In the aftermath, Emberthal reflected on how the dracthyr had reclaimed the black dragon essence taken from them and freed the one dragon who decided to help them over obeying Neltharion. She further expressed her hope that Adamanthia would decide to join them after she finished healing and planned on informing her of all that she missed on Azeroth during her imprisonment.[45]

Fury Incarnate

While locating the repatriating independent bands of dracthyr to Valdrakken, Emberthal learned from Amythora that the Sundered Flame lived on and had captured Marithos at the Lonely Falls in the Azure Span.[46] After Marithos was rescued, Emberthal directed her allies to approach Quartermaster Doros in the hope that he would cease the conflict. However, Doros refused and fought to the death under the banner of the Sundered Flame.[47] Knowing that the Sundered Flame were not going to take Doros' death well and knowing how Marithos and Amythora were vulnerable, Emberthal declared that the perimeter had to be secured and the Sundered Flame kept away from. However, the group was discovered by the Sundered Flame, but before a battle could commence Winglord Dezran arrived and was able to convince the Sundered Flame that they needed to become the Ebon Scales once more, with Emberthal serving as their Scalecommander, a position she accepted, while retaining Dezran as Winglord.[48] With the Ebon Scales reborn, the dracthyr returned to Valdrakken where Emberthal pledged to work to bring the dracthyr together.[49]

Guardians of the Dreams

Along with many of the Alliance and Horde leaders, Emberthal came to Alexstrasza's aid when she was attacked by Fyrakk the Blazing in the Emerald Dream. In the battle that followed, she fought with her fellow dracthyr, Cindrethresh, Azurathel, and Viridia at the Field of Flames and was amongst those who fought against Ashendir Hartwood.[50][51]

Following Fyrakk's death, Amirdrassil blossomed into Azeroth.[52] During the subsequent celebratory party, Wrathion sat with the Dragon Aspects, Ysera, Sabellian, and Wrathion. Feeling that the dracthyr had come along way, that they no longer had orders to follow, but friends and allies, Emberthal declared her belief that the modern world would embrace her people, better than the one in the distant past.[53]

Seeds of Renewal

Through her new purpose in leading the Ebon Scales, Emberthal was able to find peace from all the losses she suffered. Emberthal inquired as to how Cindrethresh and Azurathel were in regards to the Horde and Alliance, where both revealed that they had found a place to belong. This prompted Emberthal to declare that they had awoken without knowing who they could trust and now that they had allies amongst the mortal kingdoms and the dragons. She then declared that there was so much that awaited them in the Dragon Isles and beyond.[54]

Dark Heart

Emberthal questioned Chromie about visage forms, leading the dragon to the conclusion that Emberthal was ready to pick her own. However sensing that she was also troubled, she sent adventurers to check in on her. As they approached, they found Emberthal in the company of Viridia and Cindrethresh, where Emberthal expressed her confusion on why she needed another form.[55] Not fully understanding the concept of the visage forms but hearing that it was supposed to be one's own expression of self, Emberthal directed adventurers with asking various denizens of Valdrakken how they found their truest self. Emberthal was ultimately unsatisfied with the answers and was now more unsure than ever.[56]

After hearing the various stories of the denizens of the Dragon Isles, Emberthal made the decision not to choose a visage at all, as she felt that she didn't need one, that she was who she was, and that was enough. With this declaration, the others fired off fireworks in celebration of her choice.[57]
