The Obsidian Citadel is located in western Waking Shores, and is the ancient home of the black dragonflight. It is here that the Obsidian Oathstone can be found.

Its underground vaults stretch for miles, where many powerful weapons and artifacts were locked away for safekeeping.[1]

Background

Dragonflight

Dragonflight This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

Following the reawakening of the Dragon Isles in 40 ADP, the Qalashi djaradin led by Warlord Sargha laid siege to the Obsidian Citadel, only to find it empty; taking it and the internal fortress of Neltharus.[2][3] According to Archivist Edress, the walls of the citadel had stood strong for thousands of years, and so the djaradin had to use their elemental magic to crack the earth beneath, entering from within Neltharus.[4]

Despite Dragon Queen Alexstrasza's advices, the citadel was assaulted by Wrathion and his Blacktalon forces.[5][6] Fortunately, the assault was spared massive casualties by the unexpected arrival of Sabellian and reinforcements from the Obsidian Brood. The two forces eventually claimed the Obsidian Throne, the literal throne of the former Earth-Warder Neltharion.[7]

When Wrathion discovered that the Obsidian Oathstone had been shattered, likely after Neltharion broke his oath to protect the world,[8] the adventurer and Forgemaster Bazentus worked together to repair the forge of the Earth-Warder, the most powerful of all the dragon forges in existence,[9] and used it to restore the oathstone with the fragments they collected across the citadel.[1][10] In the aftermath, Sabellian and Wrathion began to debate who was worthy to become the new ruler of the black dragonflight, and as a result, the new Black Aspect.[11]

At some point, Weaponmaster Vordak betrayed the Blacktalon, stealing many of the citadel weapons in the process, and joined the Worldbreakers.[12]

By the Year 42 ADP, the Obsidian Citadel was firmly under the control of the black dragonflight, who had entirely repaired the citadel from the djaradin attack.[13]

Faction quests

Following the Waking Shores questline, the Obsidian Citadel becomes a weekly quest repository and grinding location for the Sabellian and Wrathion factions. Upon choosing which heir of Neltharion they want to support, new quests and rewards will open to them for that week.

Here, players can kill many of the Qalashi djaradin to recover  [Key Fragments] and  [Key Framings] to create  [Greater Obsidian Keys] (once a week for N [70EWQ] Allegiance to One) and  [Restored Obsidian Keys] (repeatedly after the first) to return to the dragons of their choice, including several other factions such as the smiths under Forgemaster Bazentus, or even the misguided Worldbreakers in the Slagmire. Returning a certain number of keys will summon a new rare spawn or event for players in the area to complete for reputation with the would-be aspects, the Valdrakken Accord, and reward useful loot in the form of cosmetics, upgrades, gold, and reputation tokens for other factions.

The quests available weekly rotate, meaning that they are not always the same, and while players can only choose one dragon to implicitly support that week, they can still aid the other dragon by giving them keys or drops such as the  [Mark of Sargha] or  [Sargha's Signet].
