The Legion intro experience takes place in two parts: a shared intro experience for (almost) all classes and players - landing on the Broken Shore, and later, class-and-spec specific quests to acquire an artifact and set up their class hall.

Broken Shore

All non-demon hunter characters start Legion by starting where the intro cinematic ends, heading to the Broken Shore.

Demon hunter starting experience

Demon hunters instead begin their existence by revealing what happened to the Illidari during the Sha'tari assault on Black Temple during the invasion of Outland. It turns out that Illidan Stormrage sent the Illidari to a Burning Legion prison world, Mardum, to recover the  [Sargerite Keystone]. After acquiring the keystone and returning to the Black Temple, the Illidari are captured by the Wardens and put into stasis.

Years later, the player is woken up by Maiev Shadowsong, because she's run out of other options, as the Vault of the Wardens has been overrun by the Burning Legion. After retaking the Vault, Archmage Khadgar appears, informing the player of the even greater threat of the Legion and teleports everyone to their faction capitals — Stormwind City and Orgrimmar.

Khadgar's plan

At this point, all characters' storylines are united at the Illidari camps in their faction capitals. Khadgar's Upgraded Servant then appears, offering players to accompany Khadgar as he calls the Council of Six for a vote concerning Dalaran's future. Khadgar and the player then embark on a quest through Ulduar and Karazhan to find means to turn the tide and close the Legion gateway at the Tomb of Sargeras. After Khadgar learns that the key lies in the Pillars of Creation, the Council teleports Dalaran to their presumed location — the Broken Isles.

Artifact acquisition and class halls

After Dalaran is moved to the Broken Isles, characters immediately start the quest to acquire their first artifact and set up the class hall. Each class and spec has it's own chain.

Next steps

Each class's final quest in their class hall is selecting which of the four level-up zones they wish to start in:

Azsuna

The once-idyllic island paradise of Azsuna is being invaded - the Legion rains death from above. Queen Azshara's naga rise from the depths below, and the cursed ghosts of the island's former inhabitants stir. All seem drawn to a relic of great power hidden deep within the elven ruins.

Val'sharah

The ancient forest of Val'sharah is the home of the demi-god Cenarius and the birthplace of druidism. Malfurion Stormrage has returned to these sacred woods to commune with his great mentor and reclaim the Tears of Elune.

Highmountain

One of the last great frontiers of the Broken Isles. Highmountain dominates the northern horizon with its jagged peak. Its treacherous slopes are home to both noble tauten tribes and the brutish subterranean drogbar, whose uneasy peace will be tested by the relentless march of the Legion.

Stormheim
Alliance King Genn Greymane is preparing to take the mighty Skyfire to the bluffs of Stormheim to locate the Aegis of Aggramar. However, this land serves as the capital of an ancient vrykul clan whose leader also seeks the power of the Aegis and will stop at nothing to take its power for himself.
Horde Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner has prepared her personal fleet to set off to the bluffs of Stormheim to locate the Aegis of Aggramar. Suramar
After 10,000 years in isolation, the Nightborne elves have lowered the magical barrier protecting the city of Suramar, allowing Gul'dan access to a font of incredible power - the Nightwell. Following a failed attempt to overthrow Grand Magistrix Elisande. a small group of Nightborne exiles seek[sic] to awaken the power of their ancient lands and free Suramar from the Legion's grasp.

Azsuna
Archmage Khadgar was planning an expedition to Azsuna - you should seek him out at Krasus' Landing in Dalaran immediately.
Highmountain
Our sources tell us that a Highmountain tauren emissary has recently arrived in Dalaran. We don't know his intentions, but his people could be an invaluable contact in the region.
Khadgar is greeting the emissary at Krasus' Landing in Dalaran - you should seek him out.
The Kirin Tor have created a permanent portal to Dalaran for us that can take you to the city quickly.
Stormheim
Alliance
Sky Admiral Rogers has sent word for you to meet her in Dalaran. It sounded important.

Rogers should be waiting for you in the Violet Citadel.
Horde
Nathanos Blightcaller, Champion of the Banshee Queen herself, sent for you in Dalaran. He made it sound urgent.

Val'sharah
Archmage Khadgar sent word about Val'Sharah not long ago. It sounds like he has good news.
