A dragonman is a type of dragonkin. The result of Nefarian's grotesque experiments, these creatures are chimera, a combination of bodies under a single mind.

The prime example of these aberrations was Maloriak, a human kidnapped by Nefarian and fused with the corpse of a dragonspawn. The result was described as "a bumbling minion who possessed only a dull of his former intelligence."[1] Failed fusions are called aberrations and can be found in the Fleshrender's Workshop. Several dragonmen appear as enemies in Island Expeditions, accompanying the black dragonflight.

Trivia

  • The name dragonman comes from their model file names.
  • When asked if the dragonmen are drakonid, Sean Copeland stated "Metzen has ruled that they are separate races from the dragon race. They became dragonspawn and drakonid thanks to the dragons they served (via intentional alteration or via “unintended side effect of hanging out with dragons”)."[2]
  • At BlizzCon 2010, it was mentioned in an offhand comment that dragonmen were based on unused concept art for a scrapped idea for a playable race. That concept art seems to be the one present in The Art of World of Warcraft, see gallery below.[3] Years later, during Dragonflight, the dracthyr would fulfill this ambition.
  • Dragonmen use the playable worgen skeleton.
  • The dragonmen aberrations use the plague eruptor skeleton. They are known as dragonman hulk in the game files.

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

It appears that the fusion process was a failed experiment by Nefarian to create loyal minions with their original intellect. It might also have been an attempt by Nefarian to recreate the dracthyr.

It is not confirmed that every extant dragonman is a combination of a human or other mortal and a dragonspawn, though it would seem likely under the circumstances.
