Stair of Destiny
The Stair of Destiny is the massive foundation of the Dark Portal in Outland, located on the "edge of the world" in eastern Hellfire Peninsula. Before the destruction of Draenor, this location was a convergence of ley lines.[1] Like Shattrath City, the Stair is a sanctuary, where PvP combat is disabled.
See Dark Portal for information about the Portal's other side.
History
Invasion of Draenor
When the Alliance Expedition launched their counterstrike against the Horde of Draenor, they destroyed the orcish forces around the area and fortified it.[2]
The Alliance soldiers eventually defended the entrance of the Portal to the bitter end, managing to destroy it to protect Azeroth from the backlash of Draenor's destruction.[3]
The Burning Crusade
The Portal in Outland is much larger and more elaborately decorated than the Portal on Azeroth, and like the Azeroth side is heavily entrenched by both the Horde and the Alliance. The Stair's defenses are constantly attacked by demons, led by a gigantic Pit Commander. The demons include felguard foot soldiers, infernals that rain from the sky, and heavier armored wrathguard. The forces of Azeroth have made portals to both Orgrimmar and Stormwind (which players can use), apparently calling in reinforcements to the front. Upon receiving their first quest here, flight paths to Honor Hold (Alliance) and Thrallmar (Horde) are automatically given to players, allowing them to access Outland while avoiding the legions of demons that surround the Portal. Leading from the Stair of Destiny is the Path of Glory, which runs from the base of the Stair to Hellfire Citadel.
For both Alliance and Horde, this will be the place where players receive their first Outland quest.
Soon after the Alliance, Horde, and the Order of the Silver Hand took control of the area, Ragnok Bloodreaver attempted to assault it, but his efforts were thwarted by Jorad Mace and his allies he had gathered.[4]
Warlords of Draenor
When the Dark Portal on Azeroth was redirected to an alternate Draenor, the original in Outland was cut off from the Blasted Lands. To work around this, all city portals that were going to the Blasted Lands were rerouted directly to Hellfire Peninsula via the Stair of Destiny.
Legion
During the Legion's third invasion of Azeroth, demons invaded the Stair of Destiny, killing the Alliance and Horde defenders stationed there. Kor'vas Bloodthorn also returned here in order to open a way to Kruul's lair.[5]

Patch changes
- Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14): The Dark Portal no longer functions from this side and cannot connect with the Blasted Lands. An extra pair of Alliance and Horde mages have set up new portals directly in front of the Dark Portal to Stormwind and Orgrimmar.
- Attempting to enter the portal will result in hitting a wall.
