Mana bombs are powerful explosive devices developed by the blood elves for use against enemy spellcasters. These bombs are fueled by pure arcane energy and kill instantly. The exact workings are unclear, but they appear to utilize some kind of massive mana burn.

Background

The Burning Crusade

This section concerns content related to The Burning Crusade.

The first mana bombs were employed in Outland by blood elves loyal to their Prince, Kael'thas Sunstrider. Kael'thas utilized these vile weapons to remove what he perceives as "obstacles." The blood elves successfully used this weapon twice, first sending a Broken from Tuurem to suicide-bomb the Cenarion Thicket in Terokkar Forest, and later bombing Kirin'Var Village in Netherstorm. The Cenarion Thicket bomb left behind a strong field of residual energy that turned the teromoths vicious and drove the only surviving druid, Warden Treelos, helplessly mad.

A third mana bomb was prepared in the courtyard of Firewing Point, the closest of Kael'thas' outposts to Shattrath City, for use against either the Allerian Stronghold or Stonebreaker Hold, near the edge of the Bone Wastes or possibly Shattrath itself. However, after a series of quests investigating what happened to Cenarion Thicket and discovering the blood elves' complicity, adventurers from both sides are tasked to attack Firewing Hold and set off the bomb before it can be used. The final code to set off the bomb is held by a blood knight named Sharth Voldoun, who resides at the top of the tower high above the courtyard.

Tides of War

The archmage Thalen Songweaver eventually created a mana bomb of his own, its destructive power augmented by the Focusing Iris, which had been stolen from the Blue dragonflight. By crushing Northwatch Hold and making a brazen display of his superior numbers, Garrosh Hellscream goaded the Alliance into moving many of their strongest members — including General Marcus Jonathan, Rhonin and a portion of the 7th Legion — into Theramore Isle to defend against the inevitable attack. The mana bomb was then dropped from a zeppelin, completely obliterating the city and everyone in it. Because of the use of the Focusing Iris, the mana bomb was so powerful that it tore holes in the fabric of reality, and magically altered the physical structure of those caught in the blast.

Isle of Thunder

This section concerns content related to Mists of Pandaria.

Tactical mana bombs were utilized during the conflict between the Kirin Tor and the Sunreavers on the Isle of Thunder. Girana the Blooded mentioned that they were created during the war against the Lich King through a joint operation with the Kirin Tor, though not perfected until recently. She also mentions using them hoping to make Jaina squirm with rage.

Warlords of Draenor

A mana bomb is located in Vol'jin's Spear.

Legion

This section concerns content related to Legion.

Arcane bombs are used during the assault on Broken Shore in the Legion ship where Mephistroth resides, detonated by Khadgar. Three are later used on Argus to destroy Terminus in the Antoran Wastes, the primary port-of-call for Legion ships, in order to take out the Burning Legion's infrastructure.

Dragonflight

The prototype bombs of the Sullied Banner.

After the awakening of the Dragon Isles, the Sullied Banner, a sect of rogue mages led by Turi Flickerflame, tried to recreate the mana bomb that destroyed Theramore several years ago. They created several prototypes that could cause issues if they were even accidentally detonated.

Trivia

• Majority of the Outland and Northrend bomb models were all updated to that of Mists of Pandaria.
• During the early beta, the objective of  [10-40] Onslaught's End was to place mana bombs at the Dark Portal.

Speculation

As the apparent mechanics of mana bombs and the known mechanics of Arcane Bombs (which are crafted by Engineers) are somewhat similar, it could mean Mana Bombs are an extremely powerful variant of Arcane Bombs. It is further reinforced by the fact that the mana bombs used against the Burning Legion at the Broken Shore were simply called arcane bombs.
