The Ethereum are a faction of ethereals who once served as the ruling class of K'aresh, the ethereals' homeworld. They swore vengeance upon Dimensius the All-Devouring after the void lord consumed their world. Since then, they have grown dark and twisted, with vengeance becoming their only recourse they have become ruthless. Several of the Nexus-Princes of the Ethereum council abandoned the Ethereum to form other groups and factions with different goals, such as the Consortium and the Protectorate who believe that the Ethereum have become as great a threat as Dimensius.[2]
During the invasion of Outland, they sought to use the manaforges of the Netherstorm to "become void",[3] but their efforts were thwarted by the Protectorate and the adventurers. They later allied with the blue dragonflight in Northrend during the Nexus War. During the Burning Legion's third invasion, they assaulted the Nexus to access the blue dragonflight's treasures within.
Ethereum members glow with red or shadowy energies rather than blue.[4]
History
The Ethereum were once the Council of Oracles, the ruling class of ethereal on their homeworld, K'aresh, many thousands of years ago. Shortly before Dimensius the All-Devouring unleashed his void armies upon the world, the ethereals were forced to evacuate K'aresh, after which the Ethereum vowed vengeance against Dimensius.[2] One thousand years ago they began a campaign of revenge against the void lord,[5] and have been tracking it ever since.[2]
However, the Ethereum have since grown "dark... twisted". Vengeance has become their only recourse and any who would stand in their way or not join their cause are considered enemies. Many ethereals saw that the Ethereum were plummeting into madness and left. Several of the Nexus-Princes of the Ethereum council abandoned the Ethereum to form other groups and factions with different goals, such as the Consortium and the Protectorate, the latter of which was formed to serve as opponents to the Ethereum.[2]
Nexus-King Salhadaar, who had given an oath to the All-Devouring, radicalized those within the Ethereum into seeking out the fragments of Dimensius, for later conscription.[6] Those radicalized Ethereum members became members of the Shadowguard, servants of Dimensius.[7]
The Burning Crusade
In Outland, it was discovered that the Ethereum sought not only to hunt Dimensius the All-Devouring, but to become Void as well. They were manipulating void energy at Manaforge Ultris in Netherstorm to bond their own energy into "nexus-stalkers".[8] Their agents could also be found in the Arcatraz.
Among their ranks, the Bash'ir used Ethereum prisons and stasis chambers to capture different creatures in the region. They also smuggled mana cells out of Tempest Keep and transported them to the Sunwell for Kael'thas Sunstrider.[9]
Ultimately, the Ethereum came under assault by both the Alliance and the Horde heroes at the behest of the Consortium. Not only were their operations in Blade's Edge and Netherstorm stopped, but their leader, Nexus-King Salhadaar was killed as well.[10]
A group of Ethereum later aided Kael'thas and the Burning Legion in the Magisters' Terrace, likely led by Yazzai who served Priestess Delrissa as a loyal acolyte.[11]
Wrath of the Lich King
By the time of the Nexus War in Northrend, the Ethereum appeared to have started negotiations with the Dragon Aspect Malygos and the blue dragonflight, though their motives were unclear at the time. In the Moonrest Gardens of Dragonblight, their ambassador Wind Trader Mu'fah was seen waiting for an audience with the blue dragonspawn Goramosh, and seemed to have been there for a while, since he was threatening to call off the negotiations. Despite Archmage Modera's orders to assassinate both representatives, in order to prevent an agreement between both sides,[12] the ethereals still used this connection a few years later in a second attempt to "become void".
Legion
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, it was revealed that in exchange for their aid in the Nexus War, the Aspect of Magic Malygos had promised the Ethereum access to the blue dragonflight's treasures within the Nexus, as it was negotiated in the accord between Goramosh and Wind Trader Mu'fah several years earlier. Once again the Ethereum sought to become an unstoppable force, to become void,[1] and used the surge needles in Coldarra to bore into the Twisting Nether and call up void energies.[13] After Nexus-Prince Bilaal was defeated by an adventurer and Azuregos, the blue dragon remained in the Nexus so that it will not fall into the wrong hands again.[14]
On Argus, Saprish commanded the local void ethereal forces as Ethereum-Lord of the Shadowguard, demonstrating his allegiance to both groups at once.
