Firelord Smolderon is the Elemental Lord of fire and master of the Firelands. He had been fighting for power against Pyroth following the death of Ragnaros during the Cataclysm, until the Earthen Ring helped make him the new Firelord during the third invasion of the Burning Legion. However, shortly after becoming the Firelord, he went missing by the time of the Fourth War. Years later, he returned allied with the Primal Incarnate Fyrakk and his forces to attack Amirdrassil in the Emerald Dream, where he was defeated by the adventurers after being betrayed by Fyrakk.

History

The death of Ragnaros after the Cataclysm left the Firelands in utter chaos.[1] The elementals residing there became engaged in an epic battle for supremacy.[2] Eventually Smolderon and Pyroth, the son of Lord Rhyolith, would emerge as the top contenders for the position of Firelord.

Legion

Legion This section concerns content related to Legion.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the shaman of the Earthen Ring attempt to unite the Elemental Lords once more, and recruit them in the fight against the Burning Legion. Upon witnessing the civil war raging in the Firelands, the Farseer sent scouts ahead and learned that Smolderon was more willing to work with mortals than Pyroth. The Earthen Ring retrieved  [Emberscar, Brand of Damnation] for Smolderon to wield, and then slew Pyroth. Now free to rule uncontested, Smolderon became the new Firelord. In exchange, he would help the mortals against the invading demon.

Smolderon sent a servant by the name of Baron Scaldius to represent him and to aid the Ring at the Heart of Azeroth.[3] Smolderon himself later journeyed to the Broken Shore to disrupt the Legion's control over the elements and to request the Ring to put an end to Barastagax the Flamecleaver, a demon who had somehow been able to use the power of the Firelands, which greatly angered Smolderon.

When the Cult of Ragnaros attempted to revive Ragnaros in Sulfuron Keep, a worried Anvil-Thane Thurgaden asked where Smolderon was, to which the cult's apparent leader High Justice Grimstone only replied "All in due time."[4]

Dragonflight

Dragonflight This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

By the time of the war against the Primalists, Smolderon had returned to the Firelands. It is never explained why he was missing before. Smolderon joined Fyrakk's attack on Amirdrassil, as he sought to unleash the powers of the Firelands to expand and incinerate the Emerald Dream. Upon seeing the Farseer amongst those seeking to save Amirdrassil, Smolderon declared that he would honor them by taking their life with Emberscar. As Smolderon realized that he was losing the battle against his adversaries, he called upon Fyrakk for aid. However, the Blazing refused and revealed that he wished to watch the Firelord die. Outraged, Smolderon declared Fyrakk a traitor and swore vengeance, before being slain by the champions of Azeroth.

Following his death, Fyrakk swooped down and waved  [Fyr'alath the Dreamrender] over his corpse as his flames died out, thanking him while his weapon absorbed his essence. It is unknown if Smolderon was permanently killed or if he will return in the Firelands like the other elementals.

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • Smolderon originally used the same model as Baleroc, and when the Shaman first meets him he is located exactly where the Baleroc boss fight takes place. Since Pyroth said he was the son of Rhyolith and also stood in the same boss encounter area as his father, Smolderon may be the son of Baleroc.
  • Following his death in Amirdrassil, the Dream's Hope, instead of returning to the Firelands to reform Smolderon's essence may have been absorbed into Fyr'alath.
