Title The Mother Wisp[1]
Gender Female
Race Wisp (Ancient guardian)
Affiliation(s) Independent
Location Grove of Aessina, Mount Hyjal

Aessina is a reclusive and powerful[2] Wild God.[1] The mortal races know little of her, save that she is the spirit of the wilderness who lurks in dense, untamed woods. She is "the soul of the forest, its beating heart, the source of life energy that breaks down stone, devours ancient ruins, and fills dense thickets with mystery and fear". Aessina is the center of the web of life. The night elves have built shrines to her throughout Kalimdor (notably the Shrine of Aessina in Ashenvale and the Grove of Aessina on Mount Hyjal), but although she is revered, she is not understood.[2]

Aessina is Ysera's everlasting companion, both in the Emerald Dream and the physical world.[3] The Ancient of Lore named Nordu was Aessina's "dearest old friend", until he died in the Firelands attack on Hyjal.[4] Spirit beasts are ancient creatures bound to Aessina.[5] Brann Bronzebeard believes Aessina created the grell, though when he asked her Aessina simply responded "maybe".[6]

Aessina in World of Warcraft.

During the assault of Ragnaros' forces on Mount Hyjal, adventurers sought Aessina to assist in cleansing and healing the Inferno and the Flamewake, ultimately returning the land to its former splendor as the Regrowth.[7] She appeared in her grove during the quest N [30-35] Aessina's Miracle, taking the form of a large wisp in a glowing light above the grove's moonwell.

Completion of the quest is one of the requirements to being eventually able to access the Molten Front.

Her shrine was built ages ago by the night elves, and lies in the midst of a forest glade in Ashenvale's heart. The shrine is a clear forest pool with a statue of Aessina standing beside it, clothed only in ivy. Dryads are known to visit the shrine to venerate Aessina.[9]

Notes

  • The "Dryad Shrine" shown on the map of northern Kalimdor in the Warcraft III manual may be related to Aessina.
  • The waterwalking buff at Mistvale during N [45WQ] Poisoned Waters is named Aessina's Blessing, although Aessina does not appear in the area.
  • As she is Ysera's companion in the Emerald Dream, and seems to be related to wisps, it is unclear what connection if any she has to Elune and the Shadowlands, namely Ardenweald and the Winter Queen.
  • Aessina is voiced by Jessica Straus.
  • Aessina appears as a legendary mage minion in the Into the Emerald Dream expansion for Hearthstone, creating a body to house her wisp form. Her flavor text reads: The Mother Wisp is a mysterious figure to most mortals, but to Ysera, she is a dear friend and companion.
