“Hope is the sun behind a stormy sky. Ever in the heart, but veiled to the eye.”
- — Chi-Ji[1]
Chi-Ji the Red Crane is a Wild God and one of the four August Celestials who watch over Pandaria. He watches over the Valley of the Four Winds and Krasarang Wilds and is sometimes referred to as the Southern Celestial or the Spirit of Hope.[2] As such, he is served by the monks and priests of the Crane Wing order at the Temple of the Red Crane. Chi-Ji also takes the guise of Fat Long-Fat.[3]
History
Ordering of Azeroth
- Main article: August Celestial#Early history

Much like the other Wild Gods, Chi-Ji, Niuzao, Xuen, and Yu'lon emerged from the great enclaves of life created by Freya during the ordering of Azeroth.[4] They were drawn to and gathered near the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and Freya noticed that these four shared a deep commitment to peace and wisdom. She knew their compassion would aid the region well, and they would later be called the August Celestials by the inhabitants of Pandaria.[5]
Reign of the Thunder King
During Lei Shen's conquest of Pandaria, he and the mogu overpowered the four August Celestials. Chi-Ji was bound in chains and paraded in front of the despairing pandaren slaves.[6]
It is said that following the pandaren revolution, Chi-Ji placed the rainbow in the sky, so that pandaren would know not to fear the storms any longer.[7]
The Burdens of Shaohao
At some point in his journey across Pandaria, Emperor Shaohao fell to marsh. Without hope, Chi-Ji flew above him and made him realize that he need to hope once again to save himself.[8]
Mists of Pandaria

Shortly before the emergence of the sha, Prince Anduin Wrynn sought an audience with Chi-Ji who eventually trained him for a short time.[9] However, due to the chaos of the Alliance-Horde war, the Sha of Despair eventually escaped from its bindings in the Temple of the Red Crane, and captured the Red Crane himself.[10] Thanks to the efforts of Anduin and the champions of the Horde and the Alliance, Chi-Ji and the temple were later freed of the corruption of the Sha of Despair.[11][12]
In the aftermath, Chi-Ji tasked the heroes to meet Loon Mai, the Shado-Pan Watch Commander of Stoneplow, to let him know that the order had the situation under control in the Krasarang Wilds, and thathe would be sending many of his followers on pilgrimage, to bring a message of hope to those in need.[13]
On the Cradle of Chi-Ji, the Red Crane helped the adventurer atop the Pedestal of Hope in defeating Ellia Ravenmane, who has forsaken Chi-Ji's hope and become possessed by a sha. After the fight, Chi-Ji thanked the adventurer, telling them that they truly embodied the Way of the Crane.[3]
After Xuen was convinced that the sha should no longer be contained, but faced and defeated,[14] Chi-Ji and the four celestials united and opened the gates of the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.[15] They later granted their blessings to the heroes and the Golden Lotus[16] to drive back the Shao-Tien mogu and kill their leader, Zhao-Jin the Bloodletter.[17]
Bleeding Sun
At some point, new members to the Golden Lotus were about to be chosen. Chi-Ji appeared in the Shrine of Two Moons and informed Dezco that one of his newly kids will become a part of the defenders of the valley. Dezco, however, did not want to leave his kids and chose to leave the valley. During the attempt, he was attacked by the Shao-Tien mogu. As he battled, he crushed Cloudhoof, and Redhorn got poisoned. As he lowered him to a pool, Chi-Ji appeared and healed the kid but left before Dezco called for help for Cloudhoof.[18]
Landfall
After Commander Scargash and the Horde took control of the Temple of the Red Crane and fortified it, Chi-Ji watched King Varian Wrynn in his quest to free the temple, asking himself: "Will the wolf behave as a warrior... or a King?" By displaying patience, Varian was eventually able to lure out his targets from the temple, resulting in the annihilation of the Horde army with minimal to no casualties for the Alliance. In the aftermath, Chi-Ji seemed satisfied with this performance but stated that there would be more trials ahead, perhaps referring to the Trials of the High King.[19]
Escalation
Since the adventurer wasn't capable of holding his power, the black dragon Wrathion planed to create a cloak of virtue imbued with the blessings of the August Celestials, which are only granted to those who completed their challenges. Thus Wrathion and his champion set off for the celestials' temples to fulfill their quest. At the Temple of the Red Crane, Chi-Ji tested their hope and eventually granted them his blessing.[20]
Siege of Orgrimmar
The trial of Chi-Ji is a test of hope. Uncertain of the future of his people, Emperor Shaohao sought out the great Red Crane. The Great Crane challenged Shaohao to find the hope within himself and cast off his uncertainty. Once the Sha of Doubt was vanquished, the Emperor became a beacon of hope for his people. To pass the trial of the Crane, warriors must believe in hope, even in the darkest of days.[21]
Following the Siege of Orgrimmar, the August Celestials joined the heroes and Lorewalker Cho to witness Emperor Shaohao planting a magic tree in the Vale of Eternal Sorrows, providing hope that the vale would one day heal. Speaking with Chi-ji afterward, the Red Crane told them that the tree was standing as a symbol of hope, and that he hoped the heroes' deeds would heal and make the land stronger.[22]
War Crimes
In the aftermath of the Siege of Orgrimmar, Chi-Ji and other Celestials chose to hold a trial involving the members of the Alliance and Horde, rather than sentence Garrosh Hellscream among themselves. During the trial, Chi-Ji took the form of a blood elf as a show of respect to the gathered races.[23]
Battle for Azeroth
Following the Fourth War, Chi-Ji and the other August Celestials defended the Vale of Eternal Blossoms from the Black Empire. He could be seen in the Summer Fields during the Black Empire assaults, and asked adventurers to close Void Tears that led to Ny'alotha, as well as to kill Eyes of the Empire.

Notes and trivia
- Like the Dragon Aspects, the August Celestials have the ability to take on mortal forms. During the trial of Garrosh Hellscream, Chi-Ji took the form of a slender, red-headed blood elf male with golden wings that Baine Bloodhoof initially mistook for a cape.
- While both Niuzao and Xuen can be strongly aligned to two different monk specializations (Brewmasters and Windwalkers, respectively), Mistweaver monks have abilities themed around both Yu'lon (
[Summon Jade Serpent Statue],
[Yu'lon's Gift] and formerly
[Stance of the Wise Serpent]) and Chi-Ji (
[Spirit of the Crane],
[Song of Chi-Ji],
[Invoke Chi-Ji, the Red Crane],
[Way of the Crane] and formerly
[Stance of the Spirited Crane]).
- Chi-Ji is a reference to the Vermilion Bird in the four symbols of Chinese mythology. The word Chi means bright red (赤) in Chinese.
- Chi-Ji is voiced by Liam O'Brien.
