Dimensius the All-Devouring (/dɪˈmɛn.si.əs/ dih-MEN-see-əs) is one of the Void lords, monstrous entities composed of pure shadow energy who rule over the Void, outside the borders of reality. Thousands of years ago, he tried to consume the worldsoul of K'aresh, homeworld of the K'areshi, who later became the ethereals and brokers. During the Devouring War, however, he was stopped and split into multiple fragments across the cosmos when the Ravel, a secret K'areshi organization, triggered the destruction of their planet in a desperate attempt to kill him. One such fragment appeared during the invasion of Outland, where it would have consumed the broken world if not for the intervention of the Protectorate and the champions of Azeroth. Eventually, the Shadowguard managed to gather all the fragments and attempted to bring back Dimensius at the Manaforge Omega on K'aresh. The All-Devouring was eventually halted before fully manifesting and is now sealed within the Dark Heart, held by his former harbinger, Xal'atath.
History
Devouring War
- Main article: Devouring War
How Dimensius found K'aresh is still hotly debated among the surviving ethereals, but the effects of his coming were unmistakable: he opened countless gateways into the Void around the planet, bathing K'aresh in dark energies and darkening its twin suns. His invasion would begin in earnest and be declared the Devouring War by the native K'areshi.[1]
The K'areshi hastily attempted to construct magical barriers around their cities, powered by the Reshii Ribbons, which could convert all forms of energy, including the Void, into arcane. Although the dark energies were blocked, the prolonged exposure of arcane energy from the shields tore away the K'areshi's corporeal shells and infused their souls with enough energy to transform them into energy beings. This altered state proved to be a blessing in disguise, however, as their enhanced minds and magical abilities allowed the ethereals to fight Dimensius and his limited forces to a standstill. Over the years, however, Dimensius eventually grew powerful enough to summon armies of fellow void creatures, forcing the K'areshi to flee into the Twisting Nether and Shadowlands, becoming ethereals and brokers.[2][3] Pandemonius served Dimensius as one of his commanders during the assault on K'aresh.[4]
While many, including most of the ethereals and brokers, believe that K'aresh was destroyed by Dimensius, he did not actually succeed. Seeing that their home was going to be lost either way, the K'areshi Locus-Walker and Nari, along with Dimensius's own harbinger Xal'atath, made the decision to destroy the planet in order to kill Dimensius, preventing him from devouring K'aresh's worldsoul. It was the only way for the K'areshi to survive.[5] Fragments of Dimensius were scattered across the Great Dark Beyond, and the ethereals and brokers would believe that their planet's destruction was his fault.
The Ethereum, a faction of ethereals that was once the ruling class on K'aresh, vowed vengeance upon Dimensius and has been tracking it ever since.[6] However, the Ethereum's leader, Nexus-King Salhadaar, was secretly a servant of Dimensius and actually using the "hunt" as a cover to locate the fragments of Dimensius that were scattered across the universe by K'aresh's destruction, with the intent of reviving him.[7] Salhadaar would radicalize some of his followers and make them fall to the Void, becoming the Shadowguard, servants of Dimensius.[8]
At some point, a fragment of Dimensius also attacked a world named Karkora, until the naaru T'uure arrived to repel the void lord, expending its own life force to save Karkora's people. It shattered into fragments, releasing a massive holy nova that washed away the void and banished Dimensius from the world,[9] but not before he consumed one of T'uure's fragments.[10]
The Burning Crusade
During the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, the ethereals were able to confront a fragment of Dimensius, left over from the destruction of K'aresh.[11] Atop Manaforge Ultris in the Netherstorm, laid a tear in the nether through which Dimensius had come, providing a link to the Void, and rendering him immune to physical harm. An ethereal by the name of Professor Dabiri enlisted adventurers to get a lock on the conduit that Dimensius was using to keep himself phased out and then destroy it.[12]
These actions forced Commander Ameer of the Protectorate to react. He deployed Captain Saeed and the Avengers who, with help from the adventurers, were able to confront Dimensius and prevent the void lord from unleashing destruction on the already fragile broken world of Outland.[13][14]
The War Within
After retrieving the Dark Heart from Jastor Gallywix,[15] Phase-Thief Azir brought it to Manaforge Omega to begin the resurrection of Dimensius.[16] With the Void Lord stirring once more, Ve'nari founded the K'aresh Trust and tasked Locus-Walker with stopping the All-Devouring.[17] Locus-Walker enlisted the aid of Azeroth's champions, including his pupil Alleria Windrunner, as well as Dimensius's former Harbinger, Xal'atath.[18]
Needing more power to accelerate his return, Dimensius and the Shadowguard raided Tazavesh to harvest energy from the brokers and ethereals.[19] Though not yet at full strength, Dimensius radiated enough power to annihilate any mortal who dared approach.[20] To counter this, Locus-Walker sought out the Reshii Ribbons so they could be used in conjunction with Xal'atath's rituals to transmute Alleria and the champions into energy, allowing them to near Dimensius and strike him down.[21]
Racing against the Shadowguard, Locus-Walker and his allies were able to collect enough ribbons before Dimensius could be brought to his full strength.[22]
The heroes of Azeroth stormed Manaforge Omega to put an end to the Shadowguard's plot. When they slew Forgeweaver Araz, his death triggered the premature return of Dimensius. The champions held off the All-Devouring until Xal'atath was able to lend her aid. Together, they forced Dimensius into the Dark Heart and sealed him away. Xal'atath stole back the relic with the essence of the Void Lord inside, now more powerful than ever.[23]

Notes
- At the height of the Black Empire, Dimensius gave the staff Voidsong, an incredibly ancient weapon, to Xal'atath the Harbinger of the Void.[24][25]
- During TBC, he was categorized as a demon in-game.
[Fragment of Dimensius] were looted from void creatures around Manaforge Ultris to destroy the conduit keeping him phased out of existence.- It was originally stated by Ask CDev that Dimensius' attack on K'aresh had him opening portals into both the Void and Twisting Nether, attacking the K'areshi with both shadow and arcane energies. Though the K'areshi were able to block the shadow energies the arcane got through, which is what turned them into the ethereals.[2] In The Doom of K'aresh, he is depicted as only assaulting the planet with the Void, and the K'areshi's transformation was due to prolonged exposure to their own arcane shields rather than something Dimensius did.
- His spiraling "foot" seems to be made of other voidwalkers.
- According to Chris Metzen, Dimensius was the last Void Lord.[26]
