Khanam Matra Sarest is the Khanam Matra of the Maruuk centaur of the Ohn'ahran Plains. As such, she is the leader of Clan Teerai, the cultural khan of all the Maruuk clans, and a direct descendant of Teera herself.[1] She rules from atop the krutal in Maruukai and is protected by the khansguard.

Biography

Sarest grew up with her sister Mariq. She was "quite the troublemaker" as a child and once let a raft of ottuks loose in Teerakai. Mariq died at some point, but her spirit still watches over Sarest as she leads the centaur clans.[2]

After the green dragonflight returned to the Ohn'ahran Plains, Sarest agreed to let one of their emissaries attend the Maruuk clans' Khural at Maruukai.[3][4] Shortly after Sansok Khan and Clan Shikaar—with adventurers in tow—reached the city,[5] the dragons' emissary Gemisath arrived and met with Sarest and the khans in the krutal. She asked the centaur to honor their ancient pact with the green flight by aiding them against the Primalists and helping them empower the Emerald Oathstone. The Khanam Matra agreed to do so and stated that, if Ohn'ahra willed it, she would blow the Horn of Drusahl the following day to signal their accord with the dragons. The meeting was interrupted by Balakar Khan of Clan Nokhud, who accused Sarest of dishonoring Maruuk Thousandbones' memory by allying with dragons. Sarest ordered him to stand down, but Balakar responded by revealing his allegiance with the Primalists, killing Gemisath, and having his Nokhud attack the other clans in an attempt to take control of Maruukai.[6]

The adventurers who'd accompanied the Shikaar defeated Balakar's forces, after which Sarest declared that her promise to Gemisath still stood and that the Maruuk and dragons evidently needed each other's help again. She told Sansok Khan and Tigari Khan to prepare their clans for war[7] and sent the adventurers to Teerakai to deliver her orders to her lieutenant, Jebotai: to marshal the Teerai forces, send messengers to the other clans, prepare Teerakai's defenses, and ask the Ohn'ir to find Ohn'ahra so that Sarest could obtain her blessing and blow the Horn of Drusahl,[8][9] since she knew that she could not win the war against the Nokhud without the dragons' aid.[10]

The adventurers later returned and informed Sarest that the Primalists had captured Ohn'ahra.[11] In response, she sent all of her scouts to find Ohn'ahra before the Nokhud could attack Maruukai again, but instead Scout Tomul arrived and reported that Balakar and the Nokhud had attacked the Teerai village at the Horn of Drusahl. Sarest assumed that Balakar intended to destroy the Horn to prevent her from summoning the dragons. Sansok warned that it might be a diversion. Sarest agreed and decided not to commit all the Maruuk's forces, instead traveling to the Horn to confront Balakar herself with only the khansguard, Tomul, and the outsiders as company. She ordered Tigari and Sansok to prepare their clans to march on Nokhudon Hold once the dragons had arrived.[10] On arrival at Drusahl, Sarest found that the Nokhud had massacred her people, and she decided that Balakar was irredeemable. Sarest and the adventurers retook the village from the Nokhud, rescued the surviving Teerai, and killed Balakar's lieutenant Warmonger Kharad to reach the top of the hill, where they discovered Balakar and the Primalist leader Koroleth holding Ohn'ahra captive behind a protective wind wall.[12] Using Ohn'ahra, Balakar blew the Horn and lured the green dragons Merithra, Gerithus, and Solethus into a trap that resulted in Solethus' death. Koroleth then forced Ohn'ahra to teleport her and Balakar away.[13]

Sarest ordered Tomul to return to Maruukai and tell the khans about a change of plans: instead of heading to Nokhudon Hold, they would march to the Emerald Gardens and join the dragons against the Primalists. Meanwhile, Sarest and the adventurers traveled to the Watering Hole to help Merithra, explain the Nokhud's betrayal, and tell her that she still had the support of clans Teerai, Shikaar, and Ohn'ir. Merithra accepted Sarest's offer of aid[14] and returned to the Emerald Gardens with the adventurers while Sarest gathered her forces.[15] Upon entering the Gardens, the Khanam Matra's army found Koroleth's Primalists and their Nokhud allies gathering at the Storm Scar, and she sent scouts—Aru and Belika, Boku, and Ohn Seshteng—to watch areas around the battlefield. After Merithra's forces arrived,[16] Sarest accompanied the adventurers onto the battlefield to destroy the Nokhud's dragonkiller ballistae so the dragons could join the fray.[17] They then helped Merithra destroy Koroleth's defenses[18] and cut off the Primalist reinforcements by shutting down the Storm Corridor,[19] before engaging and killing Koroleth herself. With the Primalists scattering,[20] Merithra invited Sarest, her fellow khans, and the adventurers to join her at the Ancient Bough,[21] where they held a ceremony to renew the vow Merithra had made with the centaur's first matriarch, Teera, through an exchange of ceremonial gifts. Sarest's gift, representing Clan Teerai, was a horn holding a few drops of her blood as proof of her unbroken descent from Teera; Merithra commented that Sarest was very much like her ancestor. Sarest and Merithra vowed that dragons and centaur would work together to protect the Emerald Dream and the Ohn'ahran Plains, causing the dragons' Emerald Oathstone to reawaken.[22]

Before the adventurers left, Sarest asked them to aid the Maruuk again by rescuing Ohn'ahra, who was still held captive by Balakar in Nokhudon Hold, while the centaur held off the Nokhud Offensive across the plains.[23] Following the liberation of Ohn'ahra and the death of Balakar, she announced that his weapon would be broken, denying him a place of honor with the ancestors, and expressed hope that Clan Nokhud would be able to heal now that they were free of his influence. Following this declaration, she returned to Maruukai.[24]

After adventurers reach renown 25 with the Maruuk, Sarest reflects on the aid they have given, how they were no longer an outsider but a familiar face to the centaur, and thus to honor that bound she gave them the title of Khansguard.[25]

Some time later she was approached by adventures who inquired if she knew anything about Bovan Windtotem and the Windtotem tribe, on behalf of Baine Bloodhoof. She revealed that she knew nothing about the tribe and that she couldn't provide any aid, as despite Balakar's death the plains remained contested territory and her forces were stretched thin. She thus suggested that they turn see if Sansok Khan could provide assistance, which ultimately led to Scout Tomul being sent to aid them.[26]

She later led the Maruuk against Fyrakk's forces at Suffusion Camp: Cinderwind, where she was aided by the green dragonflight, Baine Bloodhoof, and Mayla Highmountain.

Sarest traveled to the Ancient Bough and entered the Emerald Dream. She was amongst those who helped Alexstrasza defend the growing Amirdrassil from Fyrakk the Blazing.[27]

After Fyrakk's death, Sarest came to Emerald Gardens to see the newly bloomed Amirdrassil. Afterward, she attended the gathering on the World Tree.
