The Khural is a gathering of the Maruuk centaur clans held each season at Maruukai, in the center of the Ohn'ahran Plains. It is a time of truce and discussion, when clans large and small come together from across the plains to share resources and stories.[1][2] The event is organized and overseen by Clan Teerai, the Maruuk's tradition keepers.[3][4][5][6] Many centaur take the opportunity to reconnect with clanmates and family members.[1][7] The gathering lasts many days,[8] and it is "almost impossible" to coordinate all of the logistics.[3] Providing food for all of the attending centaur is especially challenging. Traditionally, the hunters of Clan Shikaar provide meat for all of the shared meals at the Khural by hunting game on their way to Maruukai.[8][9]

The Khural is a gathering for not only the living Maruuk but also their dead ancestors, who normally live with Ohn'ahra in the sky. Clan Teerai traditionally summon the ancestors to Maruukai by giving them an offering in the form of a meal. They intentionally overchar and overspice the food to ensure that the scent is strong enough to reach the spirits in the sky. When the ancestors arrive, the Khural begins.[10][11]

In 40 ADP, the Maruuk held a Khural where they planned to discuss the green dragonflight's return to the Dragon Isles.[12] The dragons themselves sent an emissary, Gemisath, to the gathering to ask Khanam Matra Sarest to uphold her ancestors' pact with the green flight by aiding them against the Primalists and helping them empower the Emerald Oathstone.[13] Clan Shikaar brought along outsiders of their own in the form of adventurers who sought to make contact with the green flight; Sansok Khan noted that, considering all this, it would be "a Khural to remember".[1] At the gathering, Khanam Matra Sarest agreed to help the dragons. However, the Khural was disrupted by Balakar Khan and Clan Nokhud, who revealed that they had allied with the Primalists and attacked the other clans in an attempt to take control of Maruukai,[14] marking the start of a war between the clans.[15][16]
