The fungarians are a race of mushroom people mainly found in Kul Tiras, Zandalar, and Khaz Algar. They live in caves underground, in forests, and under big trees. They are usually a hostile race, infesting the local flora and fauna of the area they inhabit, causing mushrooms to grow everywhere.[1][2] Though some fungarians can be quite friendly and have even set up shops in big cities such as Dazar'alor and the City of Threads where they sell mushrooms and other herbalism supplies. In Khaz Algar, they are often seen coexisting with lashrooms.
History
Battle for Azeroth
During the Fourth War, the Bloodbough fungarians in Ashenwood Grove in Drustvar infested the forest while its Thornspeaker guardians, Morwin Gladeheart and Amalie Oakseeker, left Drustvar briefly. They also invaded the nearby Teller Farm. When the thornspeakers returned, Amalie decided that she could deal with the grove infestation alone and got captured by Lichenlord Ripp, who was later slain by adventurers sent by Morwin to save Amalie.[1]
Meanwhile in Xal'vor in Nazmir, the Deadrot fungarians had overrun the abandoned troll settlement, and fungi could be seen growing all around the area.
The War Within
During the war in Khaz Algar, the Boskroot fungarians infested Boskroot Basin on the Isle of Dorn following Woldkeeper Freydrin's shutdown, spreading their mycotic corruption throughout the woods and even afflicting the animals there.[2] Woldtender Igris, who came to Boskroot Basin to check up on Freydrin, discovered the fungarians there and, with the help of adventurers, managed to cleanse much of the mycotic corruption in the woods in order to stop them from spreading any further in the Isle of Dorn. According to Igris, as the land healed, the fungarians too would eventually move on.[3]
In the nearby Fungal Folly, once an earthen quarry, the site was overtaken by the fungarians. Adventurers, accompanied by Brann Bronzebeard, had a few notable encounters with the fungarians there. On one occasion, the fungarians captured a group of earthen, led by Stoneguard Benston, who were scouting for resources. Benston then asked Brann and adventurers for help to deal with the fungarians and rescue his subordinates. On another occasion, they helped Lethnal, a Kirin Tor mage, to halt the decay that the fungarians were gathering—a threat that could have endangered nearby earthen settlements. Additionally, the fungarians engaged with members of the Algari Expedition when they organized a competition within Fungal Folly.[4]
Also on the Isle of Dorn were the Orecreg fungarians who were being researched by Yeonin and other earthen before they started spreading beyond the initial study site, forcing the researchers to evacuate.[5] Some time after this, Modhina ventured into the quarry cave; she wanted to find rare ore for Hreka to help her craftsmanship. She, however, fell prey to the fungarians.[6] Many of them were slain by adventurers sent to the quarry to collect their flesh, which has healing properties for the earthen,[7] and ore to repair the Coreway.[8]
In Hallowfall, the Mirehat fungarians had made the Stagnant Mire their home, threatening the nearby Arathi with parasitic fungal attacks. Great Kyron tasked adventurers with slaying Darkcap Tain, their leader, and collecting the spores to prevent a new fungal army, giving the Arathi a respite from their ongoing threat.[9] Maera Ashyld, meanwhile, had adventurers collect various mementos that ended up in the hands of the Mirehat fungarians.[10]
Elsewhere in the region, in the Growling Hollow, there were the Hollow fungarians. The nearby Arathi were afraid of them and avoided them.[11] Great Kyron asked adventurers to slay some of the more powerful fungarians, the Hollow Gigantobellas, using the Periapt of Pure Flame.[12] This group could also be found in the nearby Mycomancer Cavern. Adventurers, and Brann Bronzebeard, were sent to the caverns after reports of fungarians raiding spice crates bound for Lorel's Crossing,[13] and have had a few different encounters with them since. On one occasion, Aliya Hillhelm's pigs had gone missing in the caverns and had to be recovered from the fungarians. On another occasion, Aliya asked Brann and adventurers to help recover a mushroom from Bogpiper, which ended in a mushroom spore-induced confrontation with the fungarians. Additionally, Chef Dinaire held a scavenger hunt in the cave, which ended with Brann and the adventurers saving the contestants from the fungarians. [14]
In Azj-Kahet, Agaricus Festerbloom was mind-controlling the beasts of Pillar-nest Vosh and using them to prey on the people from the nearby Faerin's Advance camp before adventurers stopped him.[15] While the relatively peaceful Rotglow fungarians had carved a space for themselves in Deepwalker Pass.
Biology
Fungarians reproduce asexually through the spreading of spores.[9] They eat mushrooms.[16] They can mind-control animals afflicted with their spores, turning them to their service.[15] Their flesh has long been used by Unbound earthen healers for its restorative powers.[7] They have shown the ability to breathe and speak underwater. They can also burrow themselves underground in order to ambush enemies.

Trivia
- Fungarians are identical to the fungrets of Maldraxxus and Ardenweald.
- Fungarians use podling animations.
- A number of cards introduced in Hearthstone: Kobolds & Catacombs depict an unnamed race of fungus people that resemble fungarians: Shrieking Shroom, Dark Pact, and Fungal Enchanter. However, statements by Blizzard employees indicate that these creatures and the fungarians were created independently from one another, with the fungarians being invented and named by World of Warcraft artist Christopher Hayes as a personal passion project[17] whereas the Hearthstone mushroom people were apparently created by Hearthstone concept artists when doing the initial exploration and style guide art for Kobolds & Catacombs.[18]

I came up with the idea of a mushroom race and then kept picking at it here and there until it caught momentum and they found their way into the game. I even got to name these little dudes.”
