Anubisaths are titan-forged giants who are made of obsidian and have heads in the shape of jackals. They were originally assigned by Highkeeper Ra to safeguard the fortress of Ahn'Qiraj, but were later enslaved by the qiraji to serve the cause of the Old God C'Thun. Years later, the anubisaths were once more enslaved and corrupted, this time under the command of N'Zoth and his Black Empire.

History

Guardians of Ahn'Qiraj

Setis, a typical anubisath.

Like most other titan-forged, the anubisaths were created by the Forge of Wills in Ulduar. Along with the majority of the tol'vir and mogu, they accompanied Highkeeper Ra on the expedition to install the Forge of Origination in Uldum and assisted him in constructing the fortress of Ahn'Qiraj around the prison of C'Thun, before being assigned by the Highkeeper to watch over the two areas.[1] After Ra's disappearance, his titan-forged servants developed distinct cultures. While the mogu stayed in the east and most of the tol'vir congregated around Uldum, the anubisaths continued their sacred charge of watching over Ahn'Qiraj. Many among the southern titan-forged races were later infected by the curse of flesh when Loken's servants traveled south in search of the missing Ra.[2]

Enslavement

During the Aqir and Troll War, circa 16,000 BDP, a group of aqir overran Ahn'Qiraj and enslaved the anubisaths. The giants aided the aqir in their battles against the Gurubashi trolls until the trolls contained the aqir within Ahn'Qiraj.[3]

After the war, the aqir in Ahn'Qiraj evolved into a new race, the qiraji. During the War of the Shifting Sands in 975 BDP,[4] the qiraji used their anubisath slaves against the night elves. The colossal warriors proved to be efficient killing machines, with a lone anubisath often smashing through an entire unit of Sentinels. While the strongest anubisaths served as elite shock troops, General Rajaxx placed most of them on the front line to strike fear in the elves. However, once the bronze dragonflight entered the war, the tide of battle turned. As the few anubisaths capable of spellcasting were far from the front lines, the dragons could concentrate their attacks on the giants with little threat of being countered, and destroyed nearly all of the giants in the initial assault.[5]

A single anubisath, Ossirian, found a way to counter the dragons. He threw his sword through the wing of one of the dragons' leaders, Grakkarond, sending him falling to the ground. The dragon nearly mauled Ossirian to death, but the remaining anubisaths and qiraji could now overwhelm and kill the grounded wyrm. The wounded Ossirian was dragged back to Ahn'Qiraj, where C'Thun saved his life by granting him a new "horusath" form and binding him to a set of crystals in the city. As the anubisaths learned of Ossirian's survival, they began calling him the "Unscarred" and revering him as a near-invincible hero. The Bones of Grakkarond became a sacred site to the anubisaths, a testimony to their ability to defeat even the most powerful of enemies.[6]

The qiraji once again released their armies of anubisaths after the reopening of the Scarab Wall during the Ahn'Qiraj War in 25 ADP, this time against the Might of Kalimdor in Silithus and the rest of Kalimdor.[7]

An anubisath corrupted by N'Zoth in Ny'alotha.

During the Black Empire Campaign, N'Zoth used corrupted anubisaths alongside aqir and newly-forged obsidian destroyers among its forces in Uldum and Ny'alotha. These anubisaths appear significantly different from those who served the qiraji: their heads appear to be missing, replaced with a hood filled with blackness and several small glowing eyes, their skin is changed to a dark purple, and their feet are replaced with claws.

Notes and trivia

  • The anubisaths' original backstory in classic World of Warcraft was that they were first created in Ahn'Qiraj by the Twin Emperors after the Aqir and Troll War to serve as soldiers for the qiraji.[5] Chronicle Volume 1 retconned this by revealing that they are titan-forged who had only later been enslaved by the qiraji. This is similar to the obsidian destroyers, who were likewise described in classic World of Warcraft as creations of the qiraji[8] before being retconned into enslaved titan-forged (in their case tol'vir).[9]
  • Setesh, one of the watchers of the Halls of Origination in Uldum, resembles an anubisath.
  • The Sun-Touched Speaker, a servant of Rajh in the Halls of Origination, is the only anubisath known to have remained in Uldum instead of Ahn'Qiraj.
  • The name and appearance of the anubisaths are inspired by the ancient Egyptian deity Anubis, the jackal-headed god of mummification and funeral rites.
