Obsidian
- Not to be confused with Obsidium.
Obsidian is a type of rock found on Azeroth, Outland, and Draenor. On death, anubisath mobs in the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj drop a Small Obsidian Chunk or Large Obsidian Chunk on the ground. These can be mined for small and large obsidian shards, which can in turn be crafted by blacksmiths into equipment with anti-magic effects.
Certain types of titan-forged are made of obsidian, including the anubisaths once charged with safeguarding Ahn'Qiraj, the prison of C'thun;[1] and the obsidian destroyers, which are actually tol'vir enslaved by other factions such as the Scourge.[2] Uldum seems to be a natural source for obsidian, as aqir can be found extracting Voidformed Obsidian in the southwest parts of the region during Vision of the Twisting Sands.[3]
The black dragonflight and its members are sometimes referred to as "obsidian." This moniker is passed along to places and groups associated with the black dragonflight, such as the Obsidian Sanctum, Obsidian Citadel, and Obsidian Warders.
In the RPG
The Molten Span is a massive stone bridge that crosses the gorge of fire created by Ragnaros when he was summoned by the Dark Iron clan. For travelers who do not wish to cross over the lava, a stairway is carved into the rock at each end: These lead down to an obsidian platform that runs all the way around the inside of the gorge, allowing passage without using the Span itself.[4]
The Dark Iron dwarves shaped cooling lava to form the foundation for Blackrock Spire. The fortress stands black and foreboding; the obsidian of its walls seems to suck the light in from all surrounding areas.[4]
