Biography

Dragons of Nightmare

Ysondre's dragon-form.

In recent times, Ysera's most trusted lieutenants were warped by a dark new power within the Emerald Dream, the Emerald Nightmare. These wayward sentinels then passed through the Great Trees into Azeroth, intending to spread madness and terror throughout the mortal kingdoms. Ysondre had gone rogue, and emerged from the World Tree portal of Seradane to terrorize the local population of the Hinterlands.[1] Her formerly beneficial healing powers had given way to dark magics, enabling her to cast smoldering lightning[2] and summon the crazed spirits of druids trapped within the Emerald Dream to aid her. Tragically, many believe that Ysondre struggled against the Nightmare's hold even as she unleashed her vengeance upon the mortal races. Adventurers faced her and later gave accounts of the encounter.[1]

Ysondre eventually managed to free herself of the Nightmare's hold, but at the cost of her connection to the Emerald Dream.[1]

Emeriss and Lethon died in the War Against the Nightmare, Ysondre learned about Taerar's continued attempts to spread the Nightmare's rot.[3] Although fearful of once again falling to the same corruption,[4] she asked for help from adventurers to kill Taerar in Feralas. With that grim task finished and the Dream Bough portal closed, Ysondre became the last of the former Dragons of Nightmare, and although she has been saved from the Nightmare, she stated she could never return to the green dragonflight. She assumed her visage and hoped that one day, she would be able to live a simple life, hidden among the elven races.[1]

Ysondre and the Dragons inside the Emerald Dream
Corrupted Ysondre.

She was drawn back into the fight against the Nightmare. In seeking to stop the seeping corruption of the World Tree Shaladrassil in Val'sharah, Ysondre was captured by the satyr Xavius and forced to join the other Dragons of Nightmare in a fight against the heroes of Azeroth.[1] inside the Nightmare, completely consuming the Emerald Dreamway in shadows. She was ultimately slain, with Malfurion mourning her cruel fate.

After the defeat of Xavius, Ysondre's cleansed spirit along with the spirits of the other three former Dragons of Nightmare are seen in the restored Emerald Dream.

Trivia

  • It is interesting to note that when shouting out their challenges in their respective zones, the other dragons' quotes had words with negative effects ("DISEASE", "NIGHTMARE" and "SHADOW") in capitals, while Ysondre's word "LIFE" bore a strong meaning to druids and dragons alike.
  • While the eyes of Lethon, Emeriss, and Taerar were wide open, Ysondre's eyes were closed. She also wears a blindfold in her elven form.
