Aku'mai (or Aku'Mai)[2] is a three-headed hydra, a gargantuan and ancient evil gifted with Void power,[1] that has taken up residence within the Blackfathom Deeps, which once was a glorious temple dedicated to the night elves' moon-goddess Elune. A favored pet of the primordial Old Gods, Aku'mai has been a scourge to the Zoram Strand for ages. Drawn to Aku'mai's presence in the Deeps, the cult known as the Twilight's Hammer has gathered to bask in the Old Gods' evil presence by sacrificing innocents to the monstrous beast in order to gain favor with his twisted masters.
When the cultists found the hydra, Twilight Lord Kelris was convinced that it was a herald of the Old Gods' return to Azeroth and his ticket to immortality. Kelris personally supervised its growth, even feeding him his own subjects to satisfy his wild hunger.[3]
Aku'mai carries within him a small measure of the Old Gods' power,[4] apparently enough to want to "devour the world".[5]
After Twilight Lord Bathiel took command of the cult after the Cataclysm, his first order was to throw his sire, Lord Kelris, into the hungry maw of Aku'mai.[1][6]
The charge of the Twilight's Hammer cultists in the area was to protect Aku'mai as it would be needed in the Hour of Twilight. However, Horde champions killed the cult members,[7] including their lord Bathiel and Aku'mai itself. After the Fourth War, Rexxar and Zekhan entered the Deeps in order to confirm that the Twilight's Hammer remained dead, just as the Horde had left them. The pair found the maggot-ridden corpse of the Devourer still dead.[1]
Notes and trivia
- Of Aku'mai's three heads, one seems to be named the Devourer and another the Venomous. The third head's name is unknown.
- Within the beginning tunnels of Blackfathom Deeps, large sapphire clusters could be found along the cave walls. The Blackfathom naga were harvesting the crystals.[8] By controlling the water elemental power within the crystals, Lorgus Jett wanted to appease Aku'mai.[9]
- He shares an in-game model with Megaera.
- Aku'mai has several big inconsistencies in his lore. The
[Lorgalis Manuscript] specifically describes Aku'mai as a female hydra entitled "Princess of the Deep". She was said to roam Blackfathom, blessing its caves with her ancient wisdom. The original Aku'mai boss' Adventure Guide referred to her as female, but claimed that she was a mindless savage. Aku'mai the Devourer is now referred to exclusively as male, as his Adventure Guide text is identical to the old one besides the gender switch.
- In Exploring Azeroth: Kalimdor, Zekhan's report described Aku'mai with "its".[1]
