Half-breed[1][2][3] (or halfbreed[4] and cross-breeds[5]) is a term denoting rare mixed heritage. Half- is a prefix attached to the offspring of races sharing a mixed ancestry. Half-breed does not denote percentage of one's heritage, but rather refers to one's mixed-heritage, and thus, any species or individual biologically related to at least two separate species. Half-races are so rare in the Warcraft universe that Blizzard don't really have any established lore about their potential longevities.[6]

As stated by Huga of the Council of Tirisfal, rare hybrids such as half-elves are sometimes prodigiously talented and have great potential.[7] However, due to their mixed heritage, half-breeds are often victims of prejudice and rejections in society.[8][9][10] Twilight's Hammer loyalists consider Dagran Thaurissan II as a "halfbreed" unworthy of the Dark Iron throne.[11]

While some custom character models may be created for especially notable half-breeds, they are typically represented in World of Warcraft by existing models.

Hybrid races,[13] hybrid creatures or hybrids[14][15] are creatures that resemble two different species (though sometimes more) put together.[13] Azeroth has many of such races.[13] Half-breeds[16] also known as crossbreeds,[17] are hybrids, it is unlikely that most hybrid races formed through the coupling of their parent races. Half-breed races are true hybrid races.

Half-breed does not denote percentage of one's heritage, but rather refers to one's mixed-heritage. Thus, for example the offspring of a half-elf who coupled with a human, would still be considered half-elf itself.[18] In rare cases, an individual may be so far removed from one of their ancestral heritage, that they may be considered a full member of their parent's race. For example, Commodore Jessi Falrevere may have a hint of dwarven blood flowing in her veins.[19] This would suggest, that one of her parents was distantly related to dwarfs, but had enough human blood to be considered human, rather than a hypothetical 'half-dwarf'. However, in general, since the term 'half-'"race"' is passed onto the offspring of a half-breed, and since mixed races tend to congregate and create their own cultures and society, it is possible for half-breeds to propagate and ensure the continuation of their 'race'. For example, the half-elves, that wanted to be given their own land, separate from the Alliance, so they could live there own way.[18]

The magnataur are considered unique among the hybrid races for many reasons, including their large size. While they obviously resemble centaur, dryads and other hybrid races, they do not appear to be descendants of Cenarius.[13]
