Abilities

Prior to Cataclysm, there was no explicit choice of specialization. Abilities were divided up for organizational reasons, but could be freely learned by all characters at a class trainer.

Talents

Talents become available at level 10. Prior to Mists of Pandaria, players could freely mix talents from multiple trees, as long as they had available talent points.

Talents become available at level 10. During Cataclysm, characters were initially locked into their specialization's talent tree, but after learning the tier 7 talent could freely take talents from other trees as long as they had available talent points.

Mists-Logo-Small.png Mists of Pandaria Classic

Talents become available at level 15. Starting in Mists of Pandaria, every 15 levels characters were presented with a choice of three mutually exclusive talents. Talents were available to all specializations.
