Flame Shock is a level 3 shaman ability. It is one of the three shock spells available to shamans. Because the DoT component can critically strike any shaman can increase the effectiveness of this spell through Spell crit.
Tips and tactics
- Refreshing the DoT may cause you to lose a few periodic damage ticks.
- Like all DoT spells, Flame Shock can be used to prevent rogues from using [Vanish].
- With the guaranteed critical strike aspect of [Lava Burst] when Flame Shock is active, Flame Shock + Lava Burst is a staple for Elemental (and to an extent, Restoration) shamans.
Patch changes
- Hotfix (2024-01-22): Damage increased by 20%.
- Hotfix (2023-12-19): Control of Lava damage increased by 8%.
- Hotfix (2023-07-24): Control of Lava damage from being dispelled increased by 40%.
- Patch 10.1.0 (2023-05-02): Flame Shock's dispel protection from [Control of Lava] is now a baseline part of Flame Shock for Elemental and Enhancement.
- If Flame Shock is dispelled, a volcanic eruption wells up beneath the dispeller, exploding for (300% of Spell power) Fire damage and knocking them into the air.

- Patch 9.2.5 (2022-05-31): For Enhancement, Flame Shock no longer shares cooldown with [Frost Shock].
- Hotfix (2022-03-09): Fixed an issue where Flame Shock would potentially fall off the primary target when Flame Shock was spread on the maximum number of targets.
- Hotfix (2022-03-07): Fixed an issue where the global cooldown reduction of Flame Shock was incorrectly benefitting from the effects of haste twice.
- Patch 9.2.0 (2022-02-22): Flame Shock can now be applied to a maximum of 6 enemies at a time.
- Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now available for all specializations. Duration reduced to 18 seconds. For Enhancement, Flame Shock shares cooldown with [Frost Shock].
- Patch 8.1.0 (2018-12-11): Duration increased to 24 seconds.
- Patch 8.0.1 (2018-07-17): Elemental and Restoration shamans now use the same Flame Shock. Duration increased to 18 seconds. Now has a 6 second cooldown. Can no longer consume Maelstrom to increase the duration.
- Patch 7.1.0 (2016-10-25): Now learned at level 3 (was 5). The duration extension from spending Maelstrom for Elemental is now learned at level 13.
- Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19):
- Now learned at level 5 (was 10).
- Restoration: Instant damage increased by 380%, over time damage increased by 180%, and duration reduced to 21 seconds (down from 30 seconds).
- Elemental: Instant damage increased by 120%, over time damage increased by 37-74%, and duration reduced to 15 seconds (increased to 30 seconds with Maelstrom.
- Patch 6.2.3 (2015-11-17): Damage has been increased by 4%.
- Patch 6.0.3 (2014-10-28): Now costs 50% less mana.
- Patch 5.2.0 (2013-03-05): Duration has been increased by 25%.
- Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Duration increased from 18 to 24 sec. Now learned at level 12 (was 10).
- Patch 3.3.3 (2010-03-23): The damage-over-time component of this ability can now produce critical strikes and is affected by spell haste.
- Patch 3.2.2 (2009-09-22): The duration of all ranks has been increased by 6 seconds.
- Patch 1.11.0 (2006-06-19): Damage over time portion of all ranks slightly increased. Mana cost of ranks 3 through 5 decreased.
