The Nerub'ar are a faction of undead nerubians found in the Borean Tundra (where they are attacking Warsong Hold and the Geyser Fields) and in Icecrown Citadel.
History
The Warsong Offensive inadvertently built Warsong Hold atop a well-traversed portion of Azjol-Nerub.[1] While building the hold and the surrounding Mightstone Quarry, they broke through into the Nerub'ar tunnels,[2] allowing the nerubians to overrun the quarry. If the Nerub'ar took down Warsong Hold's inner defenses, it would allow the Scourge in the nearby Plains of Nasam to easily overrun the hold. Overlord Razgor sent Horde adventurers to go on the offensive against the Nerub'ar[3] and destroy their eggs, which they had taken to storing on scaffolding high above the epicenter of the conflict.[4] Quartermaster Holgoth sent the adventurers to collapse the Nerub'ar sinkholes throughout the quarry with seaforium charges in order to stop their reinforcements.[5]
From the Temple City of En'kilah, Prince Valanar sent his Nerub'ar to the Geyser Fields to surround the taunka of Taunka'le Village.[6] Horde and Alliance adventurers worked with the taunka and with the gnomes at Fizzcrank Airstrip to stop the Nerub'ar offensive, using an enslaved elemental and a gnomish machine, respectively, to collapse their tunnels and draw out and kill their commander, Lord Kryxix.[7][8]
No matter how effectively the Horde blockaded Azjol-Nerub, the nerubians continued to find ways back west to launch new attacks on Warsong Hold. One such attack occurred as Garrosh Hellscream and Warchief Thrall were returning from the failed meeting in Dalaran; the two leaders helped the Warsong soldiers rout the attackers.[1]
Nerub'ar forces are found inside Icecrown Citadel, guarding the way through the Frostwing Halls.
The Nerub'ar attacks on Warsong Hold grew more infrequent over time as the Horde soldiers became better at defending,[1] and they eventually ceased altogether some time before the Cataclysm.[9] However, as of the end of the war against the Jailer, the Geyser Fields are still overrun by them.[10]
