Marin Noggenfogger is the Trade Prince of the Steamwheedle Cartel, baron of the city of Gadgetzan, and creator of the famous Noggenfogger Elixir. He is married to Sprinkle, whom he previously considered a mere friend, and who called him eccentric.[4] He also supervises the settling of scores by combat in the Thunderdrome.[5] During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, he joined the Uncrowned to give his expertise in poisons and alchemy. It is unknown precisely when Marin became the head of the Steamwheedle Cartel, but it was presumably around or after he became the leader of Gadgetzan. While scheming his way to the top, he had to grease a lot of palms and sell a lot of elixirs to climb up the ranks.[2]

Biography

Background

Marin is originally from Undermine, the goblin capital located underground beneath Kezan. He attended Undermine Commerce College, where he was roommates with Marty Zoomcart.[6] Marin is also old friends with Monte Gazlowe. They joined the Steamwheedle Cartel around the same time and left Undermine together, but split ways once they arrived in Kalimdor.[7]

World of Warcraft

WoW Icon update.png This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

A few years after the Third War, Marin could be found in Gadgetzan, where he spoke of a wild idea inspired by tales of creatures called Thistleshrub Dew Collectors that inhabited the arid Thistleshrub Valley southwest of the city. According to him, these creatures stored water in glands that could potentially produce a thirst-quenching elixir. He tasked adventurers with retrieving a Laden Dew Gland from the dew collectors in the desert.[8]

He also told adventurers that he had passed by some old troll ruins the previous day and noticed a camp had been set up. However, he didn't get a chance to investigate, as he was driven away by vultures.[9] Later adventurers would encounter Marvon Rivetseeker in that camp.

Upon their return, Marin sampled the brew made from the gland—only to spit it out in disgust. Disappointed but undeterred, Marin sent the adventurers to his friend Sprinkle, a skilled chef also residing in Gadgetzan who had helped him in the past. He hoped she could transform the bitter concoction into something palatable.[4] Sprinkle revealed that her culinary prowess relied on a rare ingredient known as the Violet Tragan, a mushroom found only underwater in Valorwind Lake in the Hinterlands.[10] Once the adventurers acquired the mushroom and returned to Gadgetzan, they delivered it to Sprinkle, who prepared a potent Violet Powder. She handed it over to the adventurers with a message for Marin that he owed her a favor.[11] With the powder at hand, Marin quickly set to work perfecting his new creation, the Noggenfogger Elixir, which he proclaimed would make him millions.[12]

Cataclysm

Cata-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

By the time of the Cataclysm, Marin became the baron of Gadgetzan, and both Kelsey Steelspark and Megs Dreadshredder later tried to convince him to work with their factions. Their bickering resulted in Marin sending them to do some work instead, including dealing with the Southsea Freebooters in eastern Tanaris.[13]

He also sent Zeke Bootscuff to the Gaping Chasm with a mission: Find out how to turn a profit on the silithid or wipe them clean.[14]

According to Gazlowe, gaining a title had turned Marin into one pompous little baron.[15]

When the crew of the Wavestrider visited Gadgetzan for the last time, Durgan One-God took Makasa Flintwill to the Thunderdrome. She noticed Baron Noggenfogger supervising the settling of scores on the fights and suspected the true purpose was to encourage locals and visitors to bet on the outcomes and to allow the baron to take his cut of every wager.[5]

At some point after the Cataclysm, Captain Malus and his Hidden arrived at Gadgetzan searching for Aramar Thorne, Marin was informed of their arrival and was suspicious of them. Malus was summoned to the baron's office, but the captain didn't come. Therefore, Marin brought his hobgoblin guards and went to meet him instead and found him at the wharf by his ship, the Inevitable. When the goblin saw the human captain, he looked familiar but couldn't place him and wondered if he had met this man long ago under another name. Marin spoke with Malus about his companions, the Gordunni ogres, and warned him he didn't want any troubles in his city. Later, his wife Sprinkle invited him to a picnic, but he refused as he was very busy.[15]

When the members of the Hidden were chasing Aramar and Makasa, Marin was at the Thunderdrome arena. Distracting them from Aram, Makasa let her chasers inside and shouted that they had stolen her cheese. Marin asked the Hidden if they would return the cheese, to which Reigol Valdread responded they wouldn't. This prompted Marin to open bets as this problem would be resolved with combat.[5] During the placing of bets, Gazlowe briefly argued with Marin about the cut of the take, but eventually managed to settle and close the bets, even when Makasa's allies came to her aid.[16] The combat ended in Makasa's team's victory, and Marin collected his money from the betters.[17]

After the arena emptied, Malus arrived to find his Hidden beaten. He threatened Marin; Malus wanted Aramar, otherwise he would lay siege to Gadgetzan. The Baron retorted he had faced off pirates and bandits before but ultimately believed Malus would do that. Noggenfogger was not happy about giving in to Malus's blackmail, but he showed him a manifest and tipped him off that Aram and his friends had booked passage upon the schooner Crustacean. When Malus set sail, the human suspected lies from the goblin and anticipated that Noggenfogger had intentionally waited to pass the information along until after the schooner had set sail, thus forcing Malus to leave Gadgetzan to pursue. In reality, Sprinkle had been helping Aram and his friends, so she had learned about the Crustacean and told her husband that the boy and his friends had booked passage upon it. He had passed this intelligence on to Malus to get him out of the city. After the Hidden were gone, Sprinkle stroked his long ears and kissed him in order to soothe him, providing him relief. He was grateful to her for always putting his needs first.[18]

Legion

Legion-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Legion.

Marin in the Uncrowned Vault.

At the beginning of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Marin led the defense of Gadgetzan during the Legion Invasions, driving a massive shredder with twin flamethrowers against the Burning Legion attackers. After each invasion was successfully repelled, he offered "slightly discounted Noggenfogger Elixirs all around!".

Following the tragic Battle for Broken Shore, Marin revealed himself to be a part of the Uncrowned. During the class order campaign, he is found in the Hall of Shadows managing the Crucible of the Uncrowned. It appears Marin is the only person who truly knows how to work the venomous injections of the crucible into the Shadow's artifacts and is thus a very valuable asset,[19] though he uses this position for his own gain.[20]

In addition to aiding the Shadow on their quest to fight the Legion, Marin also asked for their help on a money-making venture: Stealing a powerful genuine love potion from the vault of Trade Prince Gallywix. Marin thanked the adventurer and served them as a champion.[21]

Trying to smooth over relations due to his earlier extortion, he donated bombs to the Uncrowned when they were working on freeing Mathias Shaw from Felsoul Hold.[22]

Battle for Azeroth

BattleForAzeroth-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Battle for Azeroth.

During the Fourth War, Marin was among those who attended the private auction for the X-52 Personnel Armor.[23] After Gallywix took Hobart Grapplehammer hostage to get the armor for himself, Marin joined the battle against the trade prince.[24] After Hobart was freed and Gallywix beaten, the armor fell into the possession of Gallywix's old rival.[25]

The Goblin Way

Noggenfogger talking to Gazlowe in The Goblin Way.

While running a mine in poor condition, opting for short-term profits at the cost of machine degradation, worker injuries, and shady business practices, Marin received word that Trade prince Monte Gazlowe wanted to inspect his mine and refused. This, however, only prompted Gazlowe to use the power of the Horde in order to stong-arm into agreeing. When Gazlowe condemns the condition, Marin defends them, noting that the likes of Jastor Gallywix would see it as a business. However, Gazlowe countered that Gallywix was a conman and that his practices were not good for unity. He then spoke with Noggenfogger about improving conditions overall to improve the goblin's way of doing business - to treat workers better, stop cutting corners, and provide safer conditions. Gazlowe even showed he meant his words by repairing a broken piece of equipment with the other goblins present.

Noggenfogger was hesitant and concerned about the other cartels seeing this as a weakness; however, Gazlowe offered to keep pressure off of Noggenfogger by aligning their cartels together. Recognizing that he would be in a position of strength, Noggenfogger agreed.[2]

The War Within

TheWarWithin-Petopia-Logo.png This section concerns content related to The War Within.

Following Xal'atath's attack on Dalaran, Marin was among the survivors found in the Tranquil Strand on the Isle of Dorn, gutting a Nerubian Saboteur in order to create antidotes for their poison.[26]

He could later be seen outside the Caverns of Time in Tanaris during the Bronze Celebration.

Undermined

Noggenfogger in Undermine.

After Jastor Gallywix entered into a deal with Xal'atath, he had arranged for the kidnapping of Sprinkle Noggenfogger.[27] With his wife's life at stake, Marin was forced to work on repairing the Dark Heart. During the process, he accidentally discovered that kaja'mite stabilized the Black Blood.[28]

Sometime after Gallywix had established himself as the "Overboss of Undermine", Laslo Overbite sought to rally the other cartel leaders against Gallywix and negotiate a new deal. While Nikki's ambition led her to support Gallywix, his leverage forced Marin and Revilgaz into compliance. In response, Gallywix had Laslo executed as an example to the others.[29] Furthermore Gallywix's enforces of the Darkfuse Solutions firmly established themselves within the Vatworks, keeping a close eye on Marin.[30] After distracting the Blackfuse guards, Marin informed Monte Gazlowe, Renzik "The Shiv", Alleria Windrunner, and champions that they would find answers at the Venture's kaja'mite mines.[31] While Alleria stayed behind to guard him, the others departed.[32]

In time the Steamwheedle Laboratories came under attack by ethereals seemingly led by Phase-Thief Azir.[33] After the ethereals were dealt with, Marin revealed that his wife had been kidnapped, and where both the hostages and Dark Heart resided. However, Phase-Thief Azir then revealed himself as he promised that they would be retrieving the Dark Heart.[34] While Alleria hunted down the Phase-Thief, Gazlowe, Renzik, and the champion set off to rescue the kidnapped hostages. They instructed Grimla Fizzlecrank and Marin to go to Bilgewater's headquarters and to send word to Revilgaz.[35] Marin was soon after reunited with his wife.[36]

After Renzik was assassinated by Nikki, Marin joined the other cartel leaders in uniting behind Gazlowe to put an end to Gallywix's tyranny.[37] As part of their plan to eliminate Gallywix's supply of Black Blood weapons, Gazlowe sent Revilgaz and Noggenfogger to end the shipments from Blackwater.[38] As the champions struck against the Darkfuse in the area, Marin directed them to collect  [Sliced Lime] to finish Sprinkle's elixir,[39] which was subsequently used to empower Fleet Master Seahorn.[40]

As the citizens of Undermine were rallied into a rebellion, Marin couldn't believe his eyes and admitted that Gazlowe was right along. That there was a new way for them, they just needed to build it.[41] Together, the people of Undermine marched on the Gallagio, destroying Gallywix's property along the way.[42] Gallywix ordered Nikki and Darkfuse to stop them, but they were able to kill Nikki, forcing him to retreat into the hotel.[43]

Gallywix called on every favor owed to protect him and his goons took to the streets of Undermine, while he barricaded himself within the Gallagio. After dealing with Gallywix's cronies, Marin helped salvage their tech and created a war tank with the other cartel leaders to breach the hotel's defenses. They fought their way through the Gallagio until they reached the Overboss himself. Cornered, Gallywix entered his mech and decided to deal with them himself. When the mech was destroyed by the heroes, Gallywix became enraged and exited its remains, repeatedly kicking it while demanding it come back online. Gazlowe tried to warn him that the mech was about to collapse, but Gallywix, refusing to admit defeat, ignored the warnings. The mech promptly gave way and fell atop Gallywix, crushing the former Trade Prince to death.[44]

Following Gallywix's death, Marin and the other cartel leaders came together to build a new tomorrow for Undermine.[45]

Sometime following this, Marin made his way to the Gallagio to celebrate its reopening under Rosebud Gallywix, who Marin viewed as being a Gallywix in name only. The reopening turned tragic when Rosebud was assassinated.[46] Rusebud's killer was ultimately revealed to be Tarbonara Fizzlecrank,[47] who was swiftly dealt with after the discovery.[48] Following this, Marin and the other cartel leaders attended the new reopening of the Gallagio.[49]

Gossip

Gadgetzan

On behalf of the illustrious and still neutral Steamwheedle Cartel, I hope you enjoy your stay.

Remember, everyone is welcome in Gadgetzan! Everyone except pirates.

If the character has completed Marin's pre-Cataclysm quests:

Welcome back, friend! If[sic] feels like it's been years since you helped me whip up my first Noggenfogger Elixir.

Now I'm running the whole city! Those things still sell like crazy.

Hall of Shadows

All's fair in love and business.

Bronze Celebration

Good to see this old desert spruced up a little.

Gossip Still selling Noggenfogger Elixirs?

Nah! Sprinkle handles the sales, and making the elixir taste a lot less like shoe bottoms. She has a talent for both.

Gossip So, what are you doing these days?

I got a town and a cartel to keep me busy. Still, it would be nice to get back to some alchemy... and the wife.

Gossip What about your work with the Uncr...

Trains! Trains are great cause I am working with nothing else you need to worry about.

Classic

Living out here in the desert is rough! I get so thirsty standing outside in this heat.

  • Buy Yes! I want more of that fabulous Noggenfogger Elixir! (after N [49] Noggenfogger Elixir)
  • Gossip Seen any strange things in the desert lately?

Well, now that you mention it, yeah, I did see something I thought was a little strange yesterday afternoon!

I was running past some old troll ruins southeast of here; well, I wasn't really running, more like hopping... The sand's so hot!

Anyway, so I was hopping past the ruins, when I noticed a camp set up there. Seems like a funny place to set up camp, if you ask me... I would have poked around a little more but one of those crazy big vultures chased me off.

Dialogue

With Megs Dreadshredder and Kelsey Steelspark in Gadgetzan:

Megs Dreadshredder says: The paperwork's ready for you to sign, Marin. My people are just waiting on your decision.
Kelsey Steelspark says: Gosh, Mr. Noggenfogger, I know you wouldn't want to damage your reputation as a neutral trade entity by forming closer ties to the Horde!
Megs Dreadshredder says: This is laughable. You know what it's like trying to do business with gnomes.
Kelsey Steelspark says: Oh, oh, I know this one! It's better than doing business with failed goblins that had to beg others for help!
Megs Dreadshredder says: Why you little irradiated...
Marin Noggenfogger yells: AGH! Enough! You two are driving me INSANE! Start getting some freakin' work done around here or get the heck out of my town!

Notes and trivia

  • When he spoke with Malus, Marin squinted his good eye at him at one point,[15] likely implying the other one is bad, hence the monocle.
  • Sprinkle and Marty Zoomcart call Marin "Noggy", but Sprinke is very possessive of it as a pet name and doesn't like other people calling him that.[51]
  • "Noggenfogger's cogs" is Gazlowe's expression of disgust.[52]
  • During N Rogue [98-110] Injection of Power, the player character could threaten or pay him in order to be allowed to use the Crucible. N Rogue [10-45] Noggenfogger's Reasonable Request later confirms that he was, in fact, threatened.
  • After completing most of the quests in Tanaris, Marin will vanish from Gadgetzan. It's unknown why he does this or where he went to.
    • This seems to have been fixed as he appears in Gadgetzan after the questlines.
  • Noggenfogger appears as a legendary card in the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion for Hearthstone. His card ability causes all targets to be chosen randomly, which is reflected by his flavor text: "This flavor text was randomly generated. If it happens to form words and make sense, that is purely by chance."
  • He has an invisible Follower recruiting spell with the following description: Achievement character bloodelf female.png Champion: Marin Noggenfogger — "Marin Noggenfogger is quite possibly the world's greatest alchemist. What he lacks in brawn, he more than makes up for in resourcefulness. Never underestimate the power of goblin ingenuity... and goblin greed!" The spell is associated with a buff that says "Marin Noggenfogger is an adept Outlaw Rogue with a wide array of tricks up his sleeve."

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

When Marin wondered if he had previously seen Malus under a different name,[15] it may have occurred during his only-known visit to Gadgetzan shortly after the Second War with his brother, Greydon.[53]
