Zakajz the Corruptor (also spelled Zakazj)[1] was a powerful C'Thraxxi general of the Old Gods. Alongside Kith'ix, it was freed from its titan-forged prison by Keeper Loken and sent to battle Keeper Tyr after the latter stole the Discs of Norgannon from Ulduar. Tyr sacrificed himself to kill the C'Thrax, and the keeper's followers buried the two of them alongside each other in the Tomb of Tyr beneath the Whispering Forest in Tirisfal Glades. Millennia later, the human king Thoradin accidentally reawakened Zakajz and gave his life to keep it from escaping. Ultimately, during the third invasion of the Burning Legion, a warrior adventurer killed Zakajz for good, after which the C'Thrax's essence was consumed by Xal'atath.

Biography

Black Empire

During the reign of the Black Empire, Zakajz and Kith'ix served as the empire's most ruthless and cunning C'Thraxxi generals. When the empire fell, they and other n'raqi were sealed away in underground chambers by the keepers.[1]

After Tyr and his allies stole the Discs of Norgannon from Ulduar, the traitorous keeper Loken excavated the tombs of Zakajz and Kith'ix and sent them to slay Tyr and reclaim the discs. The C'Thraxxi sensed Yogg-Saron's influence on Loken's mind and readily obeyed.[1] Zakajz and Kith'ix slipped past Tyr's ally Yrgrim[3] and headed south, eventually overtaking Tyr and his allies in the land that would become the Tirisfal Glades. Fearing for his allies' lives, Tyr chose to hold off the C'Thraxxi alone so his companions could escape. The C'Thraxxi grappled with Tyr for six days and nights, torrents of arcane, holy, and shadow energy ripping through the glade.[1][4] Zakajz tried to demoralize Tyr by showing him illusions of how his friends, the Dragon Aspects, would, one by one, betray him and fall to corruption in the future, culminating with the C'Thrax taking on the appearance of a corrupted Alexstrasza.[2] Knowing that he and his foes were evenly matched, Tyr ultimately sacrificed all of his remaining power and life force in a massive explosion of arcane and holy energy that heavily wounded Kith'ix and killed both Zakajz and Tyr.[1][4][5] The keeper's allies—Archaedas, Ironaya, and the other titan-forged—found Tyr and Zakajz's bodies in the resulting crater and buried them where they lay.[1] They placed the Corruptor in a grave-prison at the bottom of the Tomb of Tyr and sealed the site with magical wards to keep the creature dead.[6][7]

Grave-Prison of Zakajz

The mortals who later came to inhabit Tirisfal would feel two conflicting energies emanating from the earth: the remaining spiritual essence of Tyr, and the dark aura of Zakajz.[1] Tirisfal's ancient human tribes told legends about Tyr and his sacrifice against his monstrous foe. Circa 7,300 BDP, the exiled Highborne who would become the high elves settled in Tirisfal. After a time, Void energies radiating from the land caused some of them to go mad and become belligerent toward the nearby humans. To avert violence, the Highborne's leader, Dath'Remar Sunstrider, led his people away from the region.[8] Although the Highborne theorized that "something evil" slept beneath Tirisfal, they were never able to prove it.[9]

Following the Troll Wars in 2,800 BDP, the first human king, Thoradin, embarked on a quest to find the origins of humanity. He and his followers discovered the Tomb of Tyr and forced their way past the Tyr's Guard to enter the site.[4] Unaware of the darkness resting beneath the earth, Thoradin told the magi in his retinue to break the tomb's seals, inadvertently resurrecting Zakajz. Even barely conscious, the C'Thrax began to heal, summoned minions from below the earth, and easily slew Thoradin's followers. The king knew the C'Thrax had to be stopped before it fully awakened, and his comrades' deaths gave him enough time to bury his sword, Strom'kar, in Zakajz's brain even as the Corruptor's claws crushed the life from him. The sword's elven enchantments forced the C'Thrax into a deep slumber and kept it from regenerating. However, since the tomb's seals could not be replaced, its death was only temporary.[6][7] The Tyr's Guard vowed to stay out of the tomb for fear that further meddling could awaken Zakajz again.[4]

Centuries later, Zakajz began to stir back to life and its Void corruption spread through the tomb.[6] The leader of the Twilight's Hammer, Twilight Deacon Farthing, planned to use Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire to resurrect Zakajz in order to restore the Twilight's Hammer to their pinnacle and cement his own leadership of the cult.[10][11][12] A warrior adventurer of the Valarjar entered the tomb to recover Strom'kar alongside Thoradin's ghost. Zakajz briefly reawakened, but the warrior fought the partially-conscious C'Thrax back into unconsciousness, pulled Strom'kar from its skull, and then killed it for good with a final blow. The centuries spent buried in Zakajz[6] and slowly drinking from its shadowy power[13] left Strom'kar imbued with Void energies.[14] Twilight Deacon Farthing later entered the grave-prison with Xal'atath to perform his ritual on Zakajz, but was stopped by a priest adventurer of the Conclave. Since there was still a risk that the C'Thrax could be resurrected or awaken on its own again, the priest (at Xal'atath's urging) used the blade to drain the last of Zakajz's essence, ensuring that it was gone forever.[10]

Notes

  • The Corruptor's name is spelled "Zakazj" in Chronicle Volume 1, but "Zakajz" in World of Warcraft.
  • The existence of a buried evil beneath Tirisfal was first hinted at, but not elaborated on, in the History of Warcraft chapter  [The Founding of Quel'Thalas] in classic World of Warcraft (2004). Also in classic World of Warcraft, the leper gnome Gibblewilt occasionally states that: "The darkness beneath Tirisfal will consume us all..." In Round 3 of Ask Creative Development (2012), when asked if there was an Old God under Tirisfal, Blizzard stated that: "There's something incredibly unsettling there, but it's not an Old God. It isn't recommended to go digging through the Glades, though." Zakajz's identity was finally revealed alongside the fate of Keeper Tyr in Chronicle Volume 1 and Legion (2016).
  • In the Legion alpha, Zakajz was originally named Az'jtal.

The Bloodstone Artifacts might be related to Zakajz, as Kegan Darkmar the Forsaken spoke of how remnants of the Old Gods still lingered in the deep hollows of the world.[15]
