Blackwing Lair is a level 60 raid dungeon located at the top of Blackrock Mountain, home to Nefarian. He has recently begun efforts to bolster the black dragonflight, much as his father Deathwing had attempted to do in ages past. Nefarian's mad bid for dominance has attracted concern from the red dragonflight, which has always been the black flight's greatest foe. Though Nefarian's intentions are known, the methods he is using to achieve them remain a mystery. It is believed, however that Nefarian has been experimenting with the blood of all of the various dragonflights to produce unstoppable warriors, accomplishing what his father failed, the creation of the Chromatic dragonflight.[1]
For the Season of Discovery it was revamped as a 20 player raid, though it will allow up to 40 players.
Difficulty
Blackwing Lair has a scaling difficulty level in the form of optional trials that can be activated at Victor Nefriendius near the entrance. Completing the raid with one or more trials active will grant additional loot after defeating Nefarian. Though it is possible to activate all five trials simultaneously, there are no additional rewards for completing the raid with more than three. Additionally, one trial will be randomly chosen as the weekly trial, which will be indicated by the color of the whelp next to Nefriendius. If selected, this trial will reward additional loot.
Trials can be deactivated at any time, but cannot be reactivated afterwards. No new trials can be activated after defeating Razorgore.
Trials
- The Black Trial gives all bosses additional encounter-specific mechanics. These are listed on the pages for each boss.
- The Blue Trial will randomly place Arcane Bombs on players throughout the raid, causing them to explode for a large amount of arcane damage after 8 seconds, split between all players it hits.
- The Bronze Trial randomly speeds up or slows down players' attack, casting, and movement speeds throughout the raid.
- The Green Trial randomly deals Nature damage to players, leaving behind a damaging puddle of poison.
- The Red Trial has a chance to apply a stacking Fire damage over time effect whenever a player takes damage. It can only be removed by healing them above 90% health.
Bonus loot
If any trials are active when Nefarian dies, one or more of the following chests will spawn in Nefarian's Lair. Trials that are disabled before completing the raid will not be counted towards this reward. The loot in these chests can be any item that drops from the raid, including all Tier 2 tokens.
- Chromatic Stash: Appears with one trial active. Contains two items.
- Chromatic Supplies: Appears in place of the Chromatic Stash with two trials active. Contains four items.
- Chromatic Hoard: Appears in place of the Chromatic Supplies with three trials active. Contains five items. Weapons found in this chest will have a unique "Shadowflame" visual effect.
- Favored Riches: Appears in addition to the Chromatic chest if the weekly trial is active. Contains two items.
- Shadowflame Cache: Appears in addition to the other chests if three trials are active, including the weekly trial. Contains four items and
[Elementium Ore]. Weapons found in this chest will have a unique "Shadowflame" visual effect.
Geography
Port in by using the Orb of Command located at the end of the hall to the right of the entrance to Blackrock Spire. The attunement quest [60D] Blackhand's Command is required to access the raid.
Loot
Tier 2 tokens can be exchanged at Victor Nefriendius for "Draconic" Tier 2 gear. Players can choose to keep the Tier 2 gear with the Tier 2 bonus or exchange the item for the same Tier 2 item but with the Tier 1 bonus instead from Duke Hydraxis with the "Core Forged" tag.
Additionally, [Elementium Ore] is found as a rare drop from the Blackwing Technicians that inhabit the lair. This ore is used to smelt
[Enchanted Elementium Bar], needed for
[Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]. Players can learn to smelt Elementium from Master Elemental Shaper Krixix.
