World of Warcraft - The Emerald Dream

The Emerald Dream

Introduction

Gaze into the infinite expanse of the Timeways, and see a history where events unfolded differently. There is no false history, only different paths. In the end, everything is true...

In another time, the Legion did not invade, but continued to watch and wait for the fated hour. Instead, another evil rose and fell, but a greater evil still saw its schemes unfold unabated...

The queen of the naga, Azshara, unleashed a tide of darkness upon the world for the glory of her dark master, the Old God N'Zoth. Though the queen was struck down and her dark master's body buried in his tomb beneath the waves, the Old Gods are not ordinary flesh and blood. N'Zoth's black essence soared free of his sundered flesh, just as the Old God had planned, and now festers within the Emerald Dream, the living soul of the world of Azeroth. Within the Dream, N'Zoth builds a new form and a new army, spreading the living corruption known as the Nightmare, and schemes to bring about his ultimate victory.

The very soul of Azeroth, and all of creation beyond it, now hangs in the balance. The champions of the Alliance and the Horde must venture into the mystical realm and confront the Nightmare and its dark master directly.

Face your fears, or fall into a nightmare from which you will never awaken...

The Shimmerwyld

A Different Timeline

The Emerald Dream expansion concept and the bulk of its story and content were conceived during Mists of Pandaria, long before the events in the Legion expansion, where the Emerald Dream is visited in the form of the Emerald Nightmare raid, and the storyline of the Nightmare itself seems largely resolved with the cleansing of the Dream and the death of the Nightmare Lord Xavius, at the cost of much hardship and the death of Ysera, the matriarch of the green dragonflight.

In this concept's storyline, things are a little different. The events of Legion have not yet taken place. The Burning Legion continues to bide its time, building its forces to assault Azeroth in the future. Xavius and the Nightmare continue to pollute the darkest reaches of the Emerald Dream. Instead, the events of Reign of Azshara took place, where the queen of the naga raised a new land to the surface of the ocean and unleashed her serpentine armies upon the world, all for the glory of her dark master, the Old God N'Zoth. Though Azshara successfully freed N'Zoth from his Titan-forged prison, both Azshara and N'Zoth were struck down by the might of Azeroth's greatest heroes.

However, N'Zoth is an Old God, a mighty entity born of the Void, empowered with abilities beyond mortal comprehension. Though his body was destroyed, his black spirit endures, soaring free from his slain flesh and slithering into the Rift of Aln, the enigmatic realm that lies within the Emerald Dream, where the Nightmare holds full sway. Now, the very soul of Azeroth is in danger, and the defenders of the Emerald Dream have opened the Dreamways and called for the world's heroes to venture into the Dream itself and root out N'Zoth and his Nightmare, once and for all.

Patches

There are four content patches for the Emerald Dream expansion.

The Art of War - Fourth Specializations for all Classes

The world is filled with enemies more dangerous than mortal minds can truly understand. Distant lands thought lost to time have been found. New worlds have been discovered. Powers ancient and unfathomable have been harnessed. The mortal defenders of Azeroth are prepared to unlock new skills and new ways to wage war.

All classes have been granted 4 specializations, allowing players to unlock their character's full potential and take them into battle in never-before-seen ways.

The Path of War - Unique New Leveling System

Players will no longer grow by simply by acquiring experience points to advance one level at a time. Players will be able to customize their character progression using the Path of War.

New Zones

Proudtree's Rest

The Emerald's new high level zones are accessed from Ashenvale's Bough Shadow for the Alliance and Feralas' Dream Bough for the Horde. Players will unlock the Great Tree portals at those locations to enter the Dream.

  • Neutral Proudtree's Rest (Starter) - A verdant grove untouched by the Nightmare, where many treefolk dwell. When the Nightmare threatens to swallow the peaceful wood, the treefolk reach out to the Alliance and the Horde for aid. This is the introductory zone for new Treefolk characters.
  • Neutral Eden'ar (Capital) - The very heart of the Dream, where the green dragonflight once roosted. Spiraling minarets of living wood and great courts of mossy green stone blend seamlessly with the natural landscape of the zone. Portions of the forest-city have been given to both the Alliance and the Horde, while some sections are quarantined due to the creeping infestation of the Nightmare.
  • Neutral Shimmerwyld - The sprawling woodlands of the northern Dream, filled with forests of incredibly beauty that conceal countless fierce and savage beasts.
  • Neutral Ignaris Mountains - This towering mountain region is covered with ancient evergreen forests, growing from the colossal forms of sleeping mountain giants.
  • Neutral Frostholt - Towering frosty peaks and forests made of living ice dominate the hostile north. Within its frozen crevasses, this land hides an ancient evil.
  • Neutral The Forevergreen - A lush jungle land filled with verdant life. Forested mountains and swampy valleys dominate this region, with plant-growth that could only exist in the magical dimension of the Dream.
  • Neutral Sea of Zurvan - The peaceful sea of the western Dream holds countless wonders, including colossal mangrove trees and islands that float overhead. Here the secrets of the Titans can be found...
  • Neutral Thanacross Wastes - The once lush fields of this region have been warped into a frightful desert by the Nightmare. Jagged spires of black stone curl above vast expanses of green-glowing sand.
  • Neutral Rift of Aln - A roiling fissure of darkness located to the south of the Dream. The Nightmare holds full sway here, and those who brave the yawning chasm risk never returning. Not with their sanity intact...
  • Neutral Malorne's Glade (PvP) - A secluded region, surrounded in the fog of the Nightmare but not yet completely corrupted. Here the Wild Gods gather to watch over the battles of the Alliance and the Horde, judging which faction has earned their blessing.

Patch Zones

As the campaign of the Dream progresses, new regions will become accessible.

  • Neutral The Ur'Leng Plateau - A realm shrouded in the grip of the Nightmare and infested with terrible monsters. The insectile vespari race has constructed a great citadel in the polluted mists of the region.
  • Neutral Darkholt - Found beyond the Rift of Aln, Darkholt is a perilous sub-dimension of the Emerald Dream stepped in the power of N'Zoth.

  • The Wyld Hunt - The Wyldborn rule the forests of the Shimmerwyld, and none are more ferocious than Kurnog the Hunt-Master. From his sprawling forest lodge, Kurnog oversees his tribe's many ritual hunts, seeking out and bringing down worthy prey in the eternal cycle of survival. Tendrils of the nightmare have infused themselves into the Wyldborn's territory, and Kurnog has become gradually more blood-thirsty. Any who stray into his territory must be prepared to become a target.
  • Sartan's Maw - The great Sartan is a massive mountain giant slumbering in the Ignaris Mountains. The insidious satyr who serve the Nightmare have bound elementals into their service and now burrow into the stony body of Sartan, seeking to awaken his burning molten heart. With a giant of Sartan's size under their vile control, the satyr will be able to lay waste to the entire Dream.
  • The Riven Forge - A mighty stronghold built by the deviaan beneath the peaks of the Ignaris Mountains. The brutal deviaan have populated their fortress with twisted monsters and races plundered from the ancient depths of the Dream. The stronghold houses countless forges and foundries, stealing fire from the molten hearts of the sleeping Ignaris giants to create weapons of terrible power that the deviaan will use to conquer the Dream.
  • Siege of Eden'ar - The forces of the Nightmare have launched a prolonged siege of the green dragon's fortress-city of Eden'ar. Legions of Unwaking, hordes of beasts and bound elementals, and swarms of corrupted green dragons are all united in slavery to the Nightmare, and periodically launch attacks upon the weakening walls of the city. Without the support of mighty champions, the last bastion of sanity in the Emerald Dream will crumble.
  • Umbra'Gan, the Dark City - Built by the deviaan, the city of Umbra'Gan lies below the frozen mountains of the Frostholt, a fortified beachhead in the Emerald Dream where the deviaan plot their conquest. Within the dark stone halls of the city, the deviaan gather their slaves and servitor races, preparing to make war on the free people of the Emerald Dream. The corruption of the Nightmare is weak here, but the deviaan require no manipulation to unleash ruin upon the Dream.
  • Halls of Dreaming - A Titan facility constructed beneath the waves of the Sea of Zurvan. Its inhabitants have defended it against the corruption of the Nightmare, but as the power of the Old Gods rises they are being sorely pressed. Secrets about the Titans, the nature of the Dream itself, and more can be found within these halls.
  • Valley of the Titans - Hidden deep within the vast jungle known as the Forevergreen, the Valley of the Titans is the very cradle of the Dream itself, the fertile soil that the seed of the Dream was planted it. The magic of creation is suffused into every living thing, causing the trees to shine with every color of the spectrum. The forces of the Nightmare seek to infest this sacred land, and the free inhabitants of the Dream will need the aid of true champions to protect it.
  • Halls of Nightmare - A Titan complex built to monitor the Emerald Dream. As the once verdant landscape surrounding it became the Thanacross Wastes under the influence of the Nightmare, so too has corruption entered the heart of this once great facility. The forces of the Old God N'Zoth stalk its halls, slaying or twisting the once proud occupants. The last remaining Titan keepers here managed to compile a vast amount of information regarding the Nightmare and its origins, and N'Zoth wants it destroyed so that none may interfere with his plans.
  • Temple of Atal'Hakkar (Heroic) - Built by the atal'ai trolls who worshiped Hakkar, their blood god, the temple was sunk by green dragons who wished to halt Hakkar's rebirth. The trolls that once dwelled there tapped the powers of the Emerald Dream to carry out their rituals, but the corruption of the Nightmare has taken hold. Though Hakkar has abandoned the place, the dark essence of the Nightmare still permeates it, and threatens to spill out into Azeroth.

Raids

The Ignaris Mountains

The deviaan have mustered their warriors and slave-legions, and are preparing to launch an all-out assault upon Eden'ar. Kor'rok the Slave-Maker, the cruel architect of the assault, plans to personally lead his underlings into battle. The deviaan war-machine must be dismantled before they can attack Eden'ar, or the city will crumble under threats from both without and below.
  • Heart of the Dream - The forces of the Nightmare have launched an all-out assault upon Eden'ar, the city of the green dragonflight and the greatest bastion of sanity and order within the Emerald Dream. The champions of the Alliance and the Horde must join forces with the defenders of the Dream to repel the Nightmare's advance all across the city. If Eden'ar falls, the Nightmare will claim the Dream for the dark purposes of the Old God N'Zoth.

Factions and organizations

The Valley of the Titans

Neutral The Unwaking

The dark forces of the Nightmare, devoted to spreading its influence throughout the entirety of the Emerald Dream, in preparation of the conquest of all of Azeroth. They worship the Nightmare and its Old God creator, N'Zoth. There are multiple elements that make up the Legions of the Nightmare, each one distinct with its own methodology of destruction and corruption.

  • The Order of Thorns
    • Mortal races that serve the Nightmare. Many were drawn from ranks of the Twilight's Hammer, while others were worshipers of nature who were overcome by the Nightmare's corruptive influence and lost their senses. Races from Azeroth such as humans, night elves, tauren, trolls, and worgen make up its ranks, as well as races from the Dream such as the wyldborn, strigoi, and sluagh. They are overseen by the Xaviaan satyr, servants of the Nightmare Lord and born from the substance of the Nightmare itself.
  • The Blighted
    • Treefolk and other elemental beings of nature that have been subsumed by the Nightmare's corruption. The beings they once were are no more, and they have become walking vectors for rot and corrosion. They are a testament to the all-pervading stain of the Nightmare, the very trees and earth of the Emerald Dream raised as servants of evil.
  • Beasts of the Nightmare
    • The Nightmare's influence has turned even the most stalwart defenders of the Dream into its slaves. Great animal demigods, mighty giants of stone and earth, even the green dragonflight - many have fallen under the shadow of the Old God N'Zoth. These beings now serve the cause of the Nightmare as living war machines. The Order of Thorns seeks both to twist the animal demigods of the Dream and birth new demigods that serve the Nightmare, creatures known as the Dark Ancients.
  • The Nightmare Dragonflight
    • In the time since the Sundering, the green dragonflight flourished in the Emerald Dream, their numbers rivaling even the prolific red dragonflight. With the coming of the Nightmare the green dragonflight has suffered terribly, many of its once valiant drakes succumbing to corruption and becoming Unwaking. The Nightmare Dragonflight rules the tainted skies of the Emerald Dream, and its hideous drakes and wyrms are some of the Nightmare's most formidable weapons.

Neutral The Deviaan Host

In these early iterations of the Dream, the Titans experimented with many different lifeforms, many of which were ultimately deemed inappropriate for introduction into Azeroth's biosphere. In the end the Titans selected such races as the earthen, vrykul, mogu, and tol'vir to become their servants on Azeroth itself. Other races which were not selected were placed in stasis chambers located in the deeper iterations of the Dream. When the Nightmare infested the Emerald Dream, tendrils of it crept into the deeper iterations, breaking the stasis seals holding the races rejected by the Titans. Slowly, legions of once slumbering creatures began to awaken. The Nightmare's influence was weakened by the nature of the deeper iterations and the powers the Titans had used to craft the stasis chambers, but it was able to awaken a flicker of dark emotion within the rejected beings - they came to resent the Titans who had made them and then sealed them away. This resentment grew into hatred, hatred for all the works of the Titans, and all those they had favored.

The mightiest of these rejected races are known as the deviaan - a mighty race of demi-giants, tall and powerful. Their hides are thick and leathery, and encrusted with jagged stone-like growths. Cruel and domineering, they quickly enslaved their fellow rejects, welding them into an army both through intimidation and through promise of revenge on the works of their makers. The deviaan are ruled by a king, the strongest of their race, called Korrok the Slave-Maker.

Neutral Raxx-Vespar, the Dreamless Kingdom

The Ur'Leng Plateau

The vespari once inhabited a kingdom on Azeroth like their relatives the nerubians, qiraji, and mantid, but it vanished long ago shortly after their high priests received a vision from the Old God, N'Zoth. What became of the vespari and their kingdom is not known, but for some reason a number of these insectile creatures have recently appeared in the most distant, Nightmare-enshrouded regions of the Dream.

NeutralAllianceHorde The Emerald Dreamguard

As the Nightmare rolls over the Emerald Dream and spills its black chaos into the waking world, the inhabitants of Azeroth band together into a unified front to turn back its evil influence. Comprised of races from all across the world and guided by arch-druids and ancient protectors of the Dream, the Emerald Dreamguard represents the last, best hope of purging the wicked power of the Old God N'Zoth from Azeroth's very dreaming soul. Night elves, trolls, tauren, and worgen form the majority of the Dreamguard's dedicated military force, while arch-druids Malfurion Stormrage, Hamuul Runetotem, and distinguished druids from both the Alliance and the Horde act as leaders and advisors, directing the forces of the Dreamguard where they can do the most good. The Dreamguard is supported by innumerable others from races with a strong connection to the wilds and the Dream, such as treants, furbolg, the children of Cenarius, and more.

Due to the Nightmare's capacity for infecting those with a strong connection to the Emerald Dream, ironically the strongest of the Dream's defenders, such as the Wild Gods and the green dragonflight, must restrict themselves from the bulk of the fighting, venturing forth to combat the Nightmare's forces only when things are at their gravest, and only when they can count on the support of many mortals who can shield them from corruption if need be. Should these mightiest of creatures fall to the creeping darkness of the Nightmare, then the Dream will lose its most ardent defenders while causing N'Zoth's forces to increase in power.

Neutral Sunwing Flight

The shayetar of the Shimmerwyld serve their progenitor and master, the Wild God Shaharroth. Soaring aloft in the skies above the verdant forests of the Shimmerwyld, the Sunwing Flight keeps a keen eye on the lands below for any sign of evil and discord. Sympathetic to the people of Azeroth and sharing their goal to rid the Emerald Dream of the Nightmare's crawling corruption, the Sunwing Flight will not falter in their drive to protect their lands and those who dwell there.

Neutral Sons of Sartan

A race of mountain giants native to the Ignaris Mountains. Born of the great mountain giant ancient Sartan, these giants have slumbered among the hills and stone of Ignaris since before the War of the Ancients. The encroachment of the Nightmare and it's wicked forces have stirred the giants to waking, and they have risen in force to combat the corruption.

Neutral Dreamsingers

An order of troll druids that dwell within the Forevergreen, the Dreamsingers maintain the balance of nature in that realm and protect it from corrupting influences. They are worshipers of the Loa, and grant particular respect to the Gurubashi Loa for their efforts in fighting against the wicked blood god Hakkar, who has long been a danger to the inhabitants of the Forevergreen. Recently, the encroachment of the Nightmare has put greater pressure on the Dreamsingers to preserve their realm, and they have begun to seek assistance outside the Forevergreen for the first time in many ages.

Neutral Spirits of Whitechill

Neutral Sorrowsands Holt

Neutral The Protean

Entities of the Emerald Dream that embrace change, transformation, and evolution - ever changing, ever mutating to new forms. The Protean battle against the Nightmare by seeking ways to transform themselves into mightier warriors, always adapting so they might overcome their enemy. Their difference in ideology has brought them into conflict with other denizens of the Dream as well as the forces of the Old Gods.

Neutral The Perpetual

Entities of the Emerald Dream that believe unyielding, unchanging stasis is the only way to resist the corruption of the Nightmare - they embrace the original primal energies that the Titans used to craft the Dream, locking themselves into unchanging elemental forms, living stone, or unliving forms animated by necromancy. They seek to stifle all transformation, seeing change as a prelude to inviting corruption.
