Shaladrassil
Shaladrassil is a World Tree situated in northern Val'sharah that was once responsible for protecting the land,[1] but it was corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare[2] during the Burning Legion's third invasion of Azeroth.
The ruined town of Shala'nir was built around it. The Emerald Nightmare raid can be entered through the base of the tree, and Darkheart Thicket, which is underneath it, can be entered from a nearby cave. Inside the raid, the Clutch of Corruption occupies the trunk, while the Emerald Nightmare proper can be entered through the Core of the Nightmare located simultaneously atop the tree and inside the Nightmare itself.
History
According to Khadgar, mighty Shaladrassil was grown from a sprout taken from G'Hanir in a time before the Great Sundering. The tree is noted as so ancient, it stood at the center of Val'sharah and druidic culture since the very first night elves reached for the Emerald Dream. From this, the Dreamweavers were formed, an order so ancient they beheld as Shaladrassil bound itself to the Emerald Dream and towered over the land for eons.[3]
War of the Ancients
After the War of the Ancients, many surviving satyrs were rounded up. Thaon Moonclaw argued to execute them all but was overruled, and they were placed in an eternal sleep deep beneath the roots of Shaladrassil instead.[4]

The ancient Oakheart[5] and the green dragon Nythendra served as its protectors, until they were corrupted when the Emerald Nightmare took over the tree.[6] After it fell to the Nightmare, druids from the Dreamgrove went to investigate its roots.[7]
The massive roots of Shaladrassil arrived at the doorstep of the Temple of Elune,[8] spreading corruption throughout the forest. Isoraen Nightstar asked adventurers to gather root samples so he could discover their secrets and stop the tree's encroachment. Upon being brought the roots, he concluded that the corruption was irreversible and that their only course of action was to find a way to fight it at its source.[9]
A single root from Shaladrassil managed to surface in western Suramar, where the Darkfiend satyrs immediately began trying to corrupt the area.[10] Kalendros Irongrove asked adventurers to burn the root.[11] Still, traces of Shaladrassil's corruption subsequently remained in Suramar.[12]
Notes
- Shaladrassil's origins are a contradiction to previous lore. The dungeon journal for Oakheart calls him an offshoot of Shaladrassil that has purportedly survived the Great Sundering[13], and Khadgar's elaboration on Shaladrassil's origins outright states that not only did the tree predate the Sundering, it was the site upon which druidism was first taught.[3] This contradicts the statement in the book Wolfheart[14] that Nordrassil is supposed to be the first World Tree from, grown from an acorn of G'Hanir.

Since Shalla'tor means "Shadow Render", and -drassil means "Crown", it is possible that Shaladrassil means "Crown of Shadow".
