The unexplored ocean on the far side of Azeroth, possibly the Storming Sea.

The Storming Sea[1][2][3][4] (also Storming Seas[5] or storming seas)[6] is a sea located west of Kalimdor and east of the Eastern Kingdoms. It is almost impossible to cross due to its storms[2] and possibly also due to monsters and magic.[7] It's unclear how, if at all, it connects to the Veiled Sea, the ocean west of Kalimdor.

Long before the Sundering, Keeper Tyr warned the adventurous green dragon Erinethria that only ruin lies beyond the Storming Sea, urging her to find contentment with the bounty provided by Kalimdor. She ultimately refused and flew west, high above the storms, seeking the place from which the winds blew. Though she never returned, some of her kin claim to have dreamed of her reaching a land beyond where she raised a brood of her own. Other dragons instead recount the tale as a warning to ignore the call of the western wind and remain close to home and kin.[1]

The Arathi Empire is located on a landmass beyond the Storming Sea. The Hallowfall Expedition traveled past Titan's Isle and across the sea in armada of airships to seek out a vision by their emperor, but the fleet was nearly destroyed by a storm until they were miraculously transported to Hallowfall beneath Khaz Algar.[2][3][6][4][8]

The legends about the pirate admiral Nightsquall claim that he disappeared after sailing west, promising not to return until he'd seen all of Azeroth and plundered its treasures. Most assumed he'd been lost to the western storms, but he supposedly returned in recent years with vast amounts of treasure unlike anything seen before, though he refused to tell of what he'd seen on his journeys.[7]

The naga have successfully crossed beyond the Storming Sea, and are said to frequently clash with the Arathi in Imperial waters.[9]

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • The Arathi Empire have legends of dragons,[10] possibly suggesting that Erinethria did establish her own brood in or beyond the Storming Sea, which may be the same landmass where the Arathi Empire was founded. Whether or not they persist to the present day is unclear.
  • It's probable that Avaloren lies within or beyond the Storming Sea, and may be the continent upon which the Arathi settled.[11]
