History
Background
During the Second War in 5 ADP, the Smolderthorn, united with the other forest troll tribes under Zul'jin, joined the Old Horde in their war against the Alliance. The Smolderthorn leader, War Master Voone, led small strike teams on daring missions into the heart of high elven territory. The cunning troll joined the Dark Horde because he wanted to be its chief strategist, not because he believed in Blackhand's ideology. Voone saw the splinter faction as an underdog, and he enjoyed the satisfaction of overcoming insurmountable odds.[3]
After the Second War, the Smolderthorn became one of two tribes of forest trolls that joined the Dark Horde, a renegade group of orcs, trolls, and ogres who dwelled in Blackrock Spire. Commanded by Rend Blackhand, the Dark Horde had not given up the battle to claim Azeroth, although Rend's forces were significantly smaller than Warchief Thrall's New Horde. A group of warlocks drove the Dark Horde, which had not relinquished the original Horde's involvement in demonic magic. They are essentially still fighting the Second War, but Rend and his group knew that they stood little chance of success, despite their alliance with the black dragonflight. The Dark Horde's numbers were dwindling, and it had no means of recruiting new members. Realistically, these evil individuals were well aware that their days were numbered. Such knowledge had given them a grim mindset: they were desperate, bitter, and completely ruthless in battle.
The Smolderthorn trolls revere the memory of Zul'jin and consider the Firetree tribe acceptable allies but despise all other forest trolls as deserters, particularly the Revantusk tribe, which is loosely affiliated with Thrall's Horde. Ironically, the Revantusks consider the Smolderthorn trolls traitors for failing to leave Blackrock Spire and aid Thrall and his followers, for the Revantusks believe that Thrall leads the true Horde. In general, trolls outside the Dark Horde have long since decided that the Smolderthorn and Firetree trolls are insane for allying themselves with the black dragonflight and continuing to fight an unwinnable war.[4]
World of Warcraft
In Year 25 ADP, Blackrock Spire came under attack by adventurers of the Horde and the Alliance, where a number of the Smolderthorn, including Shadow Hunter Vosh'gajin, was slain. Marshal Maxwell and Warlord Goretooth had also ordered their champions to kill the Smolderthorn Chieftain, War Master Voone.[5][6]
Cataclysm
After the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, the Smolderthorn were among the Dark Horde forces within the Pillar of Ash and Blackrock Stronghold based within the Burning Steppes that came under attack by Horde and Alliance forces.[7] War Master Voone was later targeted by Acride who sent adventurers to kill him.[8]
Battle for Azeroth
By the time of the Fourth War in 33 ADP, Smolderthorn Speakers could be found in Zuldazar on Zandalar. Following the death of God King Rastakhan, Smolderthorn Mourners attended his funeral.[9]

- The Smolderthorn Tribe has two representatives in the Hearthstone expansion, Rastakhan's Rumble. In this game, they are portrayed as having experience with dragons due to working under Nefarian for so long.[10] War Master Voone copies all dragons in your hand, while the dragon-riding Smolderthorn Lancer can instantly kill damaged enemies.
[Smolderthorn Greatbelt] is an item that can be looted from Shadow Hunter Vosh'gajin.
