Oathstone

Oathstone refers to two different and seemingly unrelated kinds of objects associated with dragons.

Monuments

The Ruby Oathstone of the red dragonflight.

Five major oathstones are located at the seats of power for each dragonflight throughout the Dragon Isles. These monuments of trust were created by the keepers when history began on the Dragon Isles to symbolize the bond between each dragonflight and their titan patrons. They serve as symbols of the dragonflights' power and of their oaths to Azeroth.

Although the dragons left the Isles following the Great Sundering, many drakonid stayed behind and continued safeguarding the stones. The oathstones eventually went dormant. Alexstrasza believes that they fell quiet when the Dragon Aspects sacrificed their powers to defeat Deathwing during the Cataclysm. She now believes that if the dragonflights fulfill their callings and renew all of the stones, the Aspects' powers will be restored, a necessity if they are to defeat the Primal Incarnates. The bronze dragonflight believes that the restoration of the oathstones may be dragonkind's last and best hope to reclaim their position as caretakers of Azeroth.

The oathstones are as follows:

• Bronze Oathstone (bronze dragonflight) — Temporal Conflux, Thaldraszus
• Emerald Oathstone (green dragonflight) — Ancient Bough, Ohn'ahran Plains
• Obsidian Oathstone (black dragonflight) — Obsidian Citadel, Waking Shores
• Ruby Oathstone (red dragonflight) — Ruby Lifeshrine, Waking Shores
• Mother Oathstone — Tyrhold, Thaldraszus

Communication devices

A smaller kind of oathstones are used as signs of commitment to help the dragonflight or dragon it belongs to. They are important to dragons as bonds of agreement. It is possible to telepathically communicate through them. Oathstones are made from a dragon's scale which is turned into a gemstone. Because they are made from a dragon's scale, an oathstone is still considered part of the original dragon, and so can be used to communicate with the dragon and the dragon can even cast spells through them. The linked dragon can also see through their oathstone.

Shortly before the Battle of Grim Batol, the mage Rhonin was given an oathstone from Deathwing, and Vereesa Windrunner one from Korialstrasz. Deathwing's was a small silver medallion with runes around the edge and a black gemstone in the middle, the stone having been formed from Deathwing's scale. When Rhonin was wearing it, Deathwing was able to control his body remotely if he wished. Rhonin used Deathwing's oathstone to destroy the Dragon Soul, as the Soul did not have his essence inside it and so could be destroyed by his body.
